A LETTER TO YOU

CHAPTER TWENTY- FOUR.

(Story by Okegbemi Ebenezer)

She moved back to her writing table and continued with her story. “ Hmm, there are two sides to life, one it is filled with good memories while the other is with memories no one pray for. But either one likes it or not, every day is not going to full of good memories that is why we have to have trust in God and be prepared for each day” She started the new phase of the letter.

A LETTER TO YOU: Chapter 21 – The End

After the encounter with Banji and following his conviction by the court where he was sentenced to prison where he contracted diseases that led to his death, although, Martins and I had forgiven him of his wrong doings but the law must take it cause. Martins later proposed to me in the same venue and this time with a more serene and lovely environment.

It was a relationship worth it and was what I had always prayed for until the devil struck again through my In-Laws and a very close friend of mine whom I had trusted so much. (She paused a bit and stares at the ceiling as if she wanted to read something out from there. Then she looked down again and continue with her writing.
“You see, if a prophet would come to me and say that I should be mindful of my close friend, I will say maybe he was seeing the wrong vision and saying a prophecy just to separate us. In short, I will say he was just an intruder in our relationship.”

Okay let me leave all these parables and go into my story so that you can learn from my mistake.

A LETTER TO YOU: Chapter 21 – The End

After the proposal from Martins, I was on a high level, what is it that I asked that he would not provide. He got me a car of my own despite the fact that I was still in school and in my third year. He got me a nice flat so as to be able to have a comfortable life and to focus more on my studies.

”Alisa, I think it will be better if you are staying with your bestie” Martins said to me.

“Hmm, hmm, really, why do you say so, am I becoming a burden to you in your house or am I complaining” I asked him.

“Nothing of such but it will be more decent and preferable if you stay very close to your school, you know the way you drive in this busy road of our country, my mind is not at rest and with the rate of accident which I pray it does not happen to anyone. But prevention is better than cure” He said to me that day.

“But all these excuses you are giving is not yet tangible enough, can you find a proper excuse, Martins” I said to him.

“There is no other reasons or excuse for what I have said, and I promise to secure a nice flat for you. It is for your safety” He said and that was how I got my own apartment close to the school but I still use my car.

Since Bose was no longer a stranger to me, I decided to let her move in into my apartment since she once housed me when there was nothing in my hand and I can’t leave her when I now have.

We Share many secrets and things in common but little did I know that I was digging my grave. One evening, Martins had called me out for an outing and I informed Bose who had always follow me on such occasions but this time, Martins said I should come alone.

“Bestie, you will not be able to follow me today, I said to her with a smile but she just grinned back and didn’t reply like she ought to. I didn’t notice anything and made my way out. After meeting with Martins he spoils me with different goods and packages and revealed his plan of travelling overseas with me if his parent can consent to our relationship.

“You mean, I will be travelling with you” I asked him smiling with joy.

“Yes, that is after we have made final preparation and my parents approve of our relationship” He affirmed.

My Joy knew no bound that evening as I drove back to my apartment to break the news for Bose who was waiting in the sitting room.

“Why are you late, didn’t you check your time” She queried.

“I am sorry, it was Martins that delayed us, he was busy shopping for me” I said to her smiling but I didn’t know that it didn’t go down well with my friend.

“So you mean he shopped all these expensive wears for you just this evening” She asked.

“Yes now and to crown it all guess what” I asked her with happiness written all over me.

“ How can I guess” She asked.

“He promised to take me to overseas after his parents approve our relationship” I announced to her.

I noticed a little bit of sadness on her face as she was wasn’t over joyed like she ought to be but I felt it might be a sign of her thinking of how she will miss me when I am gone.

“Babe, you are not saying anything” I asked her.

“Really, I am happy for you, my friend” She said and hugged me tightly and with that I felt relieved thinking all was alright.

A LETTER TO YOU: Chapter 21 – The End

After that evening, she developed a bit of coldness towards me and she started handling most things herself. Some weeks later, she would deliberately bring up the issue concerning Martins and all that. She will start telling me how lucky I was and how she was unlucky that she wished she was the one in my position but I assured her that all will be alright.

Bose started moving closer to Martins and there was no day that would pass without mentioning his name. it is either she pronounce it by mistake unaware or she will ask me to tell her how we are preparing to meet his parents. She was my confidant but I was not wise enough to decode what she was planning.

Hmm, friends like enemy, enemy like friends, I always tell her about my moves and with that she had the perfect means to initiate her plans. The first target was Martins. She became very close that she loves to be around him anytime I was not around probably in lectures. He didn’t suspect her moves. Sometimes she asked to help with cleaning of his room and cooking. Whenever he asked about me, she always find one excuse or the other to dismiss it.

Then came one night, she decided to ask me a question which shook me to my spine.

“Alisa, do you think Martins is the best for you” She asked me with a stern look.

“Why not, is there a problem” I confronted her but she kept mute and didn’t reply.
I became suspicious of her as she comes home with different packages telling me a guy she met bought all for her and sometimes she tells the truth that it was Martins who got her the goods. I confronted him on the new development but he told me not to worry that he was just doing the little he can because she was my friend and that there was no cause for alarm. I didn’t believe it and I began to monitor Bose’s movement with Martins but what still gave me assuarace was that Martins did not change in his ways towards me.

“We will be meeting my parents this weekend” Martins said to me.

“Wow, that will be nice” I replied him.

We made necessary preparation on how to make things work but on that day of the meeting something unfortunate happened, I never knew Bose was a daughter to the friend of Martins mother.

I decided not to inform Bose about my visit to Martins parent but on getting there I met her and her mother seated on the seat.

“Welcome our wife” I was greeted by his father but the mother just looked away as if I was not on seat.

Martins tried to wink at his mother to respond to my greetings but instead told him she was not blind.

“Ahn, ahn, see this boy oo, am I blind, I have seen her now” His mother replied.

“Ehmm, sorry my daughter, you said you are from where” She asked.

“Igbo” I replied

“Where?” She raised her voice a little.

“Imo state, ma” I replied kneeling down just as Martins had told me to do.

“Igbo, Never, it is not possible” She flared up while her husband was trying to calm her down but she immediately asked Martins to see her in the room.

I was beginning to be afraid as I knew with Bose in the place there is no secret to hide because she has all the information about my past…

What will happen now?
