ALL FOR NOTHING…

Episode twenty seven

Uncle Kayode was finally laid to rest. Mama told me that hell was let loose at the funeral. Who would have thought that uncle Kayode was in a secret society? Some unknown men dressed in red and black came for the funeral demanding to take of his manhood.

“He has eaten other people’s manhood and his own must be eaten too.” One of the men said.
Uncle Kayode’s children refused to allow their father to be buried incomplete.

“No part of my father’s body will be collected and eaten.” Uncle Kayode’s second son said.
After much trouble, the men threatened to kill anybody that comes close to them. They said it was the agreement in their secret society.

They made everyone understand that uncle Kayode was wealthy because he was an active member of the society and has involved in so many fetish and diabolic things.
“He had exchanged his wealth for all his brother’s children. He never wanted his elder brother to give birth to any child so he could be the only rich man in the family. However, something went wrong and his brother’s wife conceived and gave birth to a son. He tried to do everything to kill the child but it didn’t work so he killed his brother instead to reclaim his title and add to his wealth. It was also one of the vows he made not to help his brother’s son in any way just to frustrate him. The boy has a bright future and since he couldn’t succeed, nemesis caught up on him. We’ve come to take what rightfully belongs to us.” The head of the society said as mama told me so.

They took off uncle Kayode’s manhood and roasted it right in the presence of everybody before finally laying him to rest. The news was really shocking to me. Who would have thought that uncle Kayode belonged to a secret society? What really pained me was that aunt Ifeoluwa admitted that all they had said was true and that there was a room in Uncle Kayode’s house that no one is allowed to enter.

Those who bought the house couldn’t stay and demanded for their money to be given back to them. Darasimi who had already squandered the money couldn’t provide the money and since it had already been reported that he sold his father’s house with falsified documents, he was charged with a criminal offence and was arrested right after the death of his father. What I still didn’t get was why uncle Kayode could do something like that to his brother my father.
All I’ve ever known was that papa died on his way back from Uncle Kayode’s place. He had gone to borrow some money from him which he promised to pay back. Papa had applied for a grant but it was delayed due to some reasons. He approached uncle Kayode and told him of his plans to start up a business but there was no capital. He promised to pay him back once the grant was approved and uncle Kayode who appeared to be the benevolent brother asked papa to come to his place and get the money. Papa woke up that morning with joy and promised mama that their lives will soon get better. Though mama had asked papa not to go and wait till the grant was approved, Papa still insisted that he wanted to go and that there was nothing wrong for his brother to help him. Mama told me that I was barely nine months old then. Papa was able to get the money from uncle Kayode and on his way back home, he was attacked by some unknown men with guns. They shot papa, collected the money and left him to die. It was the news of Papa’s death that later got to mama. Everyone cried as mama told me so and when the grant finally got approved and was sent to papa, uncle Kayode collected it in place of the money papa had borrowed from him.

“My brother before he died, came to me and borrowed money from me. I told him it was not my personal money and that I would be asked to give a report on the finances of the company. He agreed to pay me back once his grant is approved but too bad he had die and the money was stolen but I can’t do anything but to take the grant he had received and use it to fill the place I collected the money from which I had given to him.” Uncle Said.

Everyone saw reason with him and allow him to take the money and put it back into the company’s treasury little did they know that it was uncle Kayode who sent the men after papa the moment he left his house and though he didn’t really mean for them to kill papa but to steal the money from him. Papa was trying to prove stubborn so they had no choice but to shoot him.

When I heard all these, I couldn’t hold back my tears. Papa didn’t get to see me grow up because of his brother’s wicked heart. I became so angry that I told myself that if uncle Kayode had not died, I would have killed him myself.

Mama would not stop to preach forgiveness.

“Ayo, there is no need to nurse grudge and hatred in your heart. Your uncle has paid for his crime already. It only pained me that your father was not given a chance to be with you and see you grow up to become the man you are now.” Mama said too.

The second year exams finally came to an end and I topped. I was given the privilege of coming back to Nigeria for the break. The school approved my request and also sponsored my travel back home. I requested to go back to Nigeria for two reasons. One was for mama and the other was for Lola. I could tell that our relationship was having a wider chasm as the days passed. I could tell there was something we really needed to talk about that. I finally found time to pray and I got the message of my dream. Toyin wasn’t the one. I shouldn’t start a journey I can’t complete.

I took the first flight back to Nigeria that Saturday morning and I was very glad. I really missed home and couldn’t wait to taste Mama’s food again.

I had texted Lola that I would be returning to Nigeria that I really missed her but she didn’t reply.
Immediately I stepped out of the airport in Nigeria, I saw Mr Omotayo waiting for me outside. I didn’t tell him I was returning home and was surprised to see him.

“Welcome Ayo.” He greeted me.
“Good afternoon sir.” I greeted.
” How did you know I was coming back home today?” I asked in surprise.

“It was Lola that told me.”

“So where is Lola? Is she with you?”

“Yes, she’s behind you.”
I turned and saw Lola. She was smiling and looking more beautiful than she did the last time I saw her. I dropped my bag and wrapped her in my embrace.

“I miss you Lola.” I Said.

“I miss you more Ayo. I was really happy when I saw your message that you were coming today.”

“But you didn’t reply my text. Why?”

“Because I wanted to surprise you.”

“Thank you so much dear. You are a Darling.” I said.

We entered into Mr Omotayo’s car and drive back to Republic town. Every thing seemed to have changed alot within the two years that I was away.

We talked and laughed and I could tell how happy Lola was to see me again.

“Guess what?” Mr Omotayo said.
“What sir?” I asked.
“Lola don’t tell me you haven’t told him yet.” He asked.

“What is it that they are not telling me here?” I asked perplexed.

“You see, Lola here won a scholarship of five million naira that was awarded by the trust Communication and technological company. She is also their ambassador and is currently receiving a monthly pay of #200,000.” Mr Omotayo announced.

I couldn’t believe my ears. It was as if I was dreaming.
“Tell me you are joking.” I said.
“No Ayo it’s the truth. I wanted to tell you about it but you were always busy.” Lola said.

I was happy for Lola because she was finally achieving her dreams.

“Do you know that Lola is still on 5.0 CGPA?” Mr Omotayo said causing a greater shock.

I couldn’t believe that thesame Lola I thought was a whore back then was the same Lola that was doing wonders. It’s never really right to judge a person on the first day of meeting.

“I’ll forever be grateful to you and Mr Omotayo for all you have done for me.” Lola said.

I couldn’t visit mama at Utti that same day because I had to rest.

“Why were you not replying my texts?” I finally asked Lola when we got a chance to talk that evening.

“I assumed you were busy with Toyin and I don’t want to be an intruder.” She said.

“What do you mean by being an intruder?” I asked her.

“If from all I do, you still don’t know what it means, then I don’t think I should continue. Isn’t it obvious? Don’t you get it until now?” She asked.

“Do you love me Lola?” I asked.

“You already know the answer but you still chose to ask. Yes I do Ayo. I’m sorry but I love you and it’s the honest truth. Don’t worry about reciprocating it if you don’t feel the same way about me. I completely understand you.” She said.

I wanted to say something but didn’t know what to say. I still loved Toyin so much and with Lola I feel more comfortable being with her. I already knew what the dream meant but my feelings don’t understand that. It was still Toyin and there was nothing I could do about it…
