Episode 15

Story by Miriam Edem (Miriam Eyen Efik)

Cynthia and Achen arrived and Mukasa was more than surprised to see them.
“What are you doing here? He asked.
‘You mean your wife shouldn’t come? Achen asked.

“That’s not what I mean, you shouldn’t have bothered, he replied.

“So how is she? Or will you…..”she hasn’t put to bed yet and I have no money to do any caesarian operation on her, she needs to deliver normal, he cut her short.

” I see, so what will you do with the baby when she delivers? Cynthia asked.
“Honestly I have been thinking about it but I don’t know what I’ll do, he replied.

“What else? Take the child and the teenager to her mother, after all her mother wants her back, Achen said.

“No, I will take my child. I mean what kind of life can the old lady give to my child and how will she take care of my child? He asked.

“Oh now you’re claiming the baby? Cynthia asked and Mukasa saw his friend coming.
“How is she? He left Cynthia and went to him.

“A baby girl, he replied.
“Really? That’s good, Mukasa said and the doctor saw Cynthia.

“Your wife came? He asked and he nodded.
“I just saw her,she didn’t tell me she’s coming. So how is she? Mukasa asked.

“But she’s weak, like very very weak, the doctor said.
“What is going to happen now? Is there anything I can do? Mukasa asked.

“Yes sure, it just requires money anyway and I’ll take care of it, the doctor replied and Cynthia and Achen came closer.
“Okay can I see the baby? He asked.

“Yes sure, he replied and left while Mukasa beckoned on Cynthia to join him which Achen told her to go.

They got in and met the nurses attending to them and Mukasa saw the baby.

He slowly carried her from the nurse while Cynthia looked angrily.

“She’s beautiful, he whispered and looked at his friend who was looking at him shaking his head.

He gently returned her back to the nurse and took his friend out of the room.

“Look at the baby you wanted killing, his friend said.
“This is not why I brought you out, I was thinking… But first I hope the baby is okay? Mukasa asked.

“The baby is fine, just stressed out because of the hard labour, she will kick back fine, he replied.

“Can I have her? Christiana must not know I helped her and I know she won’t accept I carry the baby, Mukasa said.

“Are you serious? Wait a minute, what exactly are you asking me to do? He asked.

“To help her out, she can’t take care of the child but I can and I want to take the responsibility of the child welfare.

Look my wife won’t accept her in and this is the only way I can take the child now she is unconscious, Mukasa replied.

“No no no, I am just imagining how the little girl will feel, after suffering for months with the pregnancy without your help, you will now take the child without her knowing what she looks like? The doctor asked.

“I understand but I want her life to get back to normal. Look at her, I found her helpless on the road.

If I didn’t saw her and helped her what would have happened to her? Probably someone would have take the child from her or anything would have happened.

Please I can take care of the child, yes I know at first I didn’t want the child but now she is here I have to accept her, Mukasa said and his friend heaved rubbing his head.

“This is difficult, can you take care of a new born baby? He asked.

“I have a wife who is 3 months pregnant, she is scared I will bring her in, but when she finds out I will take the child without Christiana, she will gladly take care of her, Mukasa replied.

“Please I beg you don’t come to my hospital again, because I don’t like what you’re asking me to do, I have never done this and you making me do this is too difficult, he said.
“Please friend help me, my child is better with me and with time Christiana will get back to her normal life and forget this ever happened.

This child will be nothing but a huge burden for her, I need to relieve her, Mukasa said holding his hand.

“You better be sure about that, the doctor said and left and Mukasa went back to the room and saw Cynthia carrying the baby.
“When is she going to wake up? Achen asked the nurse.

“Anytime soon, the poor girl was too weak, the nurse replied and got the child from Cynthia.
“I’ll be back with her, the nurse added and left with the baby.

Cynthia looked at Mukasa and left the room slowly with Achen, while he stood looking at Christiana for a while and joined them outside.
“So what now? Cynthia asked.

“I talked with my friend, he agreed to give me the baby now she is still unconscious, what do you think? He asked.
“So I’ll be taking care of another woman child before mine huh? She asked.

“Please this is what I can do to help, I won’t be comfortable if I know my child is elsewhere with another woman and this will make me go close to Christiana which i don’t want that. We will leave with her and Christiana will be gone out of our lives forever, he said and Achen heaved touching Cynthia.

“Baby girl accept this, Achen said and Cynthia looked at her.
“Fine, so when are we leaving now? Because I think our trip will be postponed right? Cynthia asked.

“We can’t take a suckling child like this to the journey, I was thinking I’ll keep her with my aunt till she is strong a bit to travel far, what do you think? He asked.
“Good idea, Achen replied.

“Alright, I’ll talk to my aunt and I know she will help out, just go home and get the rest of the things done so we will leave before she wakes up to find us at home, Mukasa said.
“So we are still relocating then? Cynthia asked.

“Yes, but you will please stay with my aunt at least for a month, he replied and Cynthia smiled shaking her head.
“Alright, take care of yourself, and before I forget, congratulations, Cynthia said and left with Achen.

Mukasa heaved and called his aunt up telling her he’ll soon be on the way to see her.

He then went to his friend office and told him the plan which he only nodded saying nothing.

“I’ll be going to my aunt place to tell her now, please I’ll be back soon, he said.

“Be back with cash, the doctor said and he smiled.
“I’ll be back with the cash, please take care of them, Mukasa said getting up.

“Don’t worry she won’t run again, the doctor said.
“Sure, and thank you, you’re such a good friend, Mukasa said shaking him..

“Glad you are realising it now, you need to start going, his friend said and Mukasa left……..

Ochen and Dembe went out in search for Christiana, few people only told them they saw her dragging a big bag going on the road.

After a lot of search they got no tangible information about her and they gave up,
“Mom let’s go home, is obvious she has gone home, Ochen said.

“Are you sure? You said it yourself she had no money on her and she was almost due, I totally forgot about that because I was blinded with anger, Dembe said.

“Is not your fault mom, let’s go home, Ochen said taking her away…………
