“I’m glad you were able to make it.” Rose said as soon as she sighed Emma.
“I’m sorry I’m late; was so caught up at work.” He responded ad they took their seat at a spot.
“So would you like anything?” He asked as they nodded in affirmative.
“So uhmmm……why did you call this meeting?” He asked as soon as they were done with their meals and were on drinks.
“To talk about us.” She said as she sipped from from her glass. She observed he grew silent all of a sudden.
“Why the silent response? Isn’t it something worth talking about?”
“Sure…..it is.”
“Emmanuel….” She called out of the blues as they quietly walked around the city garden at the park.
“Why happened to us? I mean, I don’t understand. Did something happen? Did I do anything wrong? I can apologize if that’s the problem.” She said, and kept making guesses as Emma just stared at her, contemplating the best method to say his mind, without hurting her badly.
“Or did your dad disapprove me? Because I saw the way he…..”
“Rose.” He called out and with that she kept quiet to listen. At this point, they had settled at one of the fancy seats at the park.
“Do you believe things happen and change is constant?”
“Yes” She suspiciously responded with a nod.
“Rose…..honestly for some months now, things have been going on with me, I mean extremely personal stuffs.”
“Personal? What’s too personal that you can’t tell me? Is it about your mom’s condition?”
“No…..well, yes but there’s more to it.”
“Okay. I’m listening then. What more is there to it?” She asked, crossing her hands beneath her chest.
“Yeah so my experience few days ago has reset the whole of my mindset.”
Okay so……would this new mindset of yours affect our relationship?”
“Yes, to some point because I’ve reset my priorities as well.”
“Okay, let’s hear it then.” She said, leaning in to pay close attention.
“I want to give my spiritual life and growth everything I can offer.”
“Okay. And….?”
“That’s it. Every other thing would fall in place when I’m able to achieve this.”
“Hmmm…..okay so where do I fall in your priorities?”
“I don’t get.”
“I mean where’s my place in your life and space in your heart?”
“Rose…..please you need to understand me and what I’m about to say.” He said after a brief moment of silence. Rose nodded in response as he held her hands.
“Babe this season of my life isn’t really pleasant at all. Infact, it’s the most challenging part of my life and the only thing I can do about it is to concentrate fully on my spiritual growth. If I don’t, my whole family would be affected.”
“Hmmm….okay so you’re asking for a break then.” She concluded as he responded negatively.”
“No. I want out.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I can’t grow effectively if I continue with our relationship, it’s not possible.” He said calmly and at this point, she removed his hands from his with a gasp.
“Emmanuel! Don’t tell me you’re breaking up with me.” She said as he became quiet.
“Emmanuel I’m taking to you! What are you trying to do? Break up with me?”
“Rose please, try to understand me. It’s not like I’m leaving you for another woman or something. It’s my family we’re talking about here: their lives are at stake and if nothing’s done about it, I might lose them. Please. It is Im…..”
“Just hold it there.” She retorted in anger, with tears threatening to roll down her cheeks.
“Emmanuel, so it’s now you know your spiritual life is so important as to abandon everything including me and then chase it, right?” She said, trying as much as possible not to raise her voice at him.
“Rose….” He called, knowing where she was going.
“Please….let me finish.” She said, raising her right hand in demonstration.
“I was once on fire for God until I met you. Emmanuel I was sexually pure! But the moment I got to know you was a turnaround for me. You told me things I was careful about and valued didn’t matter. Emmanuel you deceived me, telling me God was gracious and overlooked our sinful deeds.
You practically brainwashed me, and I was stupid enough to listen to you. You made me comfortable with being intimate with you, to the point I desired it and you’re here telling me nonsense. Do you think I’m stupid or what?” She said enraged, while Emma didn’t say a word.
“Okay now, let me ask you: Is God still not gracious enough to overlook our sinful deeds?” She asked as he maintained silence with his head bowed.
“Open your mouth and respond because you’re the one I’m talking to.”
“Rose lower your voice, please. Don’t forget we’re outside…” He cautioned in a hushed tone.
“And so what??? It’s a free world after all” she retorted.
“Again I ask you, do you think I’m stupid? You discouraged me from heading and focusing on the highway, saying the street is better; now there’s a so called challenge in your family, you realize the path you once discouraged me to abandon the best option, abi?”
“I’m sorry.” He managed to say with his head bowed.
“Sorry for what exactly? Now tell me, what do you expect me to do with your sorry? Will it bring back my innocence? Or with it repair and restore my list intimacy with God? God! Why was I so stupid? What have I gotten myself into?” She lamented and couldn’t take it anymore at this point as she was in tears.
Emma didn’t know what to do to console or let her be.
He knew he was wrong
He understood he had messed her up and it hurt him as well.
He stared at her as he recalled how they met few years back. Then he made jest of her for being innocent and inexperienced. He recalled telling her she was old-fashioned because she wasn’t doing what was in vogue as youths.
“With this attitude of yours, I doubt if you’d go far.” He said. After months of persuasion, she believed him and decided to be distracted, wanting to feel among. He told her the first thing to do is was to be in a relationship like the rest of her mates were.
“Your over-seriousness is too much babe, you’re a youth for crying out loud, and you wouldn’t be one forever.” He said, and with that she listened to him. He eventually asked her out and they started dating.
Though she wanted to keep it clean because she still wanted to be pure, Emma kept persuading her to loosen up to him, as her boyfriend.
With much hesitation, she gave in to his pleas. Though they hadn’t had sx yet, they’ve practically done everything related to it together.
Recalling all these hurt Emma and broke Rose, making her feel helpless.
Emma wished he hadn’t led her into all these, Rose wished she stood her ground. At least if she had, breaking up wouldn’t be an issue this huge.
“Babe I’m sorry…..believe me, I really am. I know you must be seeing me as a devil now; on who came to misdirect your paths only to leave you to follow the same path he discouraged you from heading. I’m so sorry about all these, please.” He pleaded, trying to reach out to her but she waved his hands off forcefully.
“If you ever think you’re going to get away with this, you lie. Since you’ve made me a devil, you’d have me to face in this journey of yours.” She said and with that, picked up her bag and walked out.
“God, what have I done?”
