CHAPTER 30
Landon’s mother walked into the ward and met Kim in there with Landon.
“Landon.” She called with tears in her eyes.
“Mom? Why are you here?” Landon asked and Kim quickly moved back so she could get closer.
“What kind of question is that? Did you expect me to hear my son is in the hospital and keep sleeping?” His mother asked in a shaky voice.
“Mom, you didn’t have to. I am fine.” He responded and Sara rolled her eyes.
“I am your mother, you don’t have to pretend you are one strong man to me. Kimberly, can you please excuse us?” Sara asked and Kim nodded walking out of the ward.
“Now she is gone, you don’t have to pretend you are fine. Talk to me.” Sara stated sitting next to him on the bed.
“I am scared.” He mumbled and tears rolled down Sara’s eyes. She knew he was scared but didn’t want to show that part of himself to Kim.
“I know baby, I know you are and I am too. The doctor…” She said and Landon cut her short.
“he told you what happened already? It would be the allergies, nothing more,” he uttered hoping that was it.
“No Landon, there is more to that.” She replied and Landon nodded slowly.
“So what is it?” He asked trying to stay strong.
“Kidney cancer has grown to a whole new level.” She stated and stopped to see his reaction.
“Oh no,” he muttered and she bowed her head bitterly.
“You will be needing a transplant as soon as possible, which we would see.” She added and Landon looked away.
“And if we don’t see on time?” He asked and she sighed. Tears gathered in Landon’s eyes and he quickly wiped it off.
“You will be fine baby, nothing will happen to you, never.” She said and Landon sighed.
“What was the report from the doctor’s mother?” He asked and she breathed out loudly.
“You will die.” She whimpered and Landon couldn’t believe his ears. He never thought such a day would come when they would say that sentence to him.
“I had everything under control and now because I took my allergy just once I am going to die? Just like that?” Landon asked with fear written all over his face.
“Landon, don’t say this. You are not dying, we would get you a kidney and you will be back on your feet in no time. I believe that, and you should believe that too.” Sara muttered and Landon nodded speechlessly.
After some minutes of awkward silence and thinking from both of them, Landon spoke up…
“I don’t want to die.” He said and Sara looked at him.
“you are not dying. The doctors are working on how to get the kidney very soon, you will be out of here before you know it.” Sara encouraged and he nodded.
Kim watched them from the window, and for the very first time, she saw how scared Landon was. She felt so guilty that she was the reason he was laying in the hospital.
“If anything happens to him, I would never forgive myself.” She thought moving up and down the hallway.
The door opened and Sara walked to Kim. Kim swallowed hard in fear because she thought Landon must have told her what she did the first day she arrived.
“I am sure she hates me now.” She thought in fear and worry.
“Kim, thank you for calling me,” Sara uttered and Kim was dumbstruck.
“Thank you? That was the least I could do Ma’am. You were needed here.” Kim replied and she nodded.
“I know, but I still need to thank you,” Sara added.
“You don’t have to Ma’am. It is my responsibility as his maid.” She said and Sara sighed.
“He is scared.” She said and Kim’s eyes became wet with tears again.
“I am so sorry Ma’am,” Kim stated with her head bowed.
“You don’t have to be Kimberly. Landon needs you now more than ever.” She said and Kim looked at her in confusion.
“Needs me? Why?” She asked.
“He needs someone to make him feel alive, and you are the only one that can do that, this I know very well,” Sara said and Kim shook her head.
“Ma’am, to be honest, I don’t think I can make him feel alive. We don’t even like each other that much.” Kim stated.
“But you do like him. I heard the way you sounded on phone, you sounded so worried and scared. That means you care about him Kim, and that is why I am telling you this. I need you around him all the time because he likes you.” She said and Kim’s mouth fell open.
“Ma’am?” she called.
“you know, this isn’t the time to discuss this. I need you in there while I am gone.” She said.
“Gone?” Kim asked.
“I need to talk to his father and also help him find a kidney. I can’t just sit here and do nothing.” She said and Kim nodded.
“I will stay with him. I hope you find the kidney.” She said and Sara smiled faintly.
“I will.” She said walking away. Kim sighed and stared into the ward through the door, she exhaled and then walked into the ward.
Landon was on his phone and as soon as Kim entered he sighed.
“Do I need a bodyguard?” He asked acting cool.
“Yes, you do. You don’t have to ask for one before I know you do.” Kim said drawing the chair to herself and sitting down.
“Mother is such a drama queen.” He mumbled feeling so happy within him that she was there.
