CHAPTER 16
Martha sat on Diana’s bed as she tries on every nice dress in her wardrobe
“Diana you should have shopped for a dress this is not just any kind of dinner for goodness sake”
“Why are you making me feel bad, you know the only reason why I’m attending this dinner is because my boss asked me to join him if not this already seem more like a waste of time for me… If you keep pushing I might just decide not to go”
“Okay… ”Martha jumped up from the bed
“Like you had anything better to do”
Martha murmurs
“What did you say ”
“Nothing now let’s see what we can find here ”
Martha peeped into the wardrobe and picked out a long flowing black dinner gown with a low back
” what do we have here”
“Where did you get that from”
“Your wardrobe obviously”
“I don’t remember owning something like this”
“Well it didn’t just jump in there now go try it on.”
“Really of all dresses you chose this”
“Yes my lady, the mystery dress is the right choice”
Diana pulled on the black gown and to her surprised it fits perfectly
“now I remember where it came from, my cousin Betty got it for me for my convocation and I never worn it. I couldn’t wear this long dress and be parading about on my graduation…. I didn’t even realize I brought it with me to Lagos”
“Now it will serve it purpose, you look like a queen Diana”
“Keep flattering” she turned around
“Am not, you know you are naturally beautiful and this dress just compliments it.. It’s perfect you are absolutely gorgeous”
“Are you a les bian ”they laughed ” should I be worried”
“Maybe not, but it doesn’t mean I can’t compliment a Beautiful person when I see one”
“Yeah whatever, but don’t you think it’s a bit too much, what if I show up there and am the only one wearing a long dress or a black one for that matter”
“Who cares what others wear as long as you are looking elegant and flawless am sure your date won’t be able to take his eyes off you”
“Martha…..” She squished
“Okay okay .. sorry not your date your boss. I get it, don’t bite me”
“You are so silly, but on a serious note don’t you think this dress is too revealing. I mean my arms are bare, my back and even my ¢leavage….. Everything is just too much”
Martha rolled her eyes dramatically
“Didi I swear there’s nothing wrong with this dress, its perfect,it fits every curve and angle…. If it had been you who bought the dress I may have seen some default it comes with the buyer’s mindset but since it Betty that got this dress everything is on point”
Didi throw a pillow at her
“You are not serious Marty. Is me you are referring to as a default”
“Well if you are not so rigid,why would we spend over an hour looking for a dress amidst this heap of virgin mary outfits”
“Those are really nice dresses”
“For church or interview… I get it but it’s a dinner night sweetheart you need to loosen up and stop whining”
“Yeah…yeah ”
“Good girl now let’s get your hair fixed”
“What’s wrong with my hair”
“Didi pls …… Don’t even get me started. So you want to carry this bushy thing to an outing. Ah you have really blended with the paint on the wall of this house. When you always stay indoors and refuse to go out . How will you know if something is fine or totally bizzare”
“Geez Marty. Are you going to lecture me about hair now”
“Am going to train you girl. Don’t worry just sit down and let me do my magic”
“This is going to be a long ride”
“And what, you think am going to let you miss this dinner on purpose when I know that’s exactly what you want…. Not gan happen girl”

In fifteen minutes, martha was done stretching and styling Diana’s hair into a perfect bob.
Diana was truly amazed Martha could style her hair so nicely and quickly
“Wow”
“How did I do”
“Beautiful! I can’t believe you have never styled my hair like this before ”
“The time wasn’t right I guess”
“I still think you are all doing it to get me out of this house..”
“Very true and pick up your heels. ”
“Yes ma, Thank God Philip has somehow become your ride home so am not scared of coming late, I know he’s gat you covered..”
“Don’t worry about me,take all the time you need and have fun”
“Indeed…… And by the way what’s up with you two”
“Who”
“Philip”
“Nothing we are just good friends” she looked away
“Looks more than that to me”
“Cmon Di, you know he has a girlfriend”
“So something could happen if he is single
”Martha raised her shoulder
“You sneaky brat, don’t worry if Philip is the one he’ll come around eventually ”
“That’s very unlikely, but enough about me tonight is about getting you ready for the night of your life”
Diana’s phone buzzed
” it’s Marcel.. He is already outside”
“Right on time such a gentleman wohoo!”
Martha turned to see Didi hasn’t put on any make-up and panicked as rushed to the window
” Oh my gosh he’s really here and we have not done your makeup.. Oh no” she flushed out of color
“Relax Marty I already sent a text for him to give me a few minutes, besides I don’t need too much of anything my hair is just fine I don’t need heavy makeup”
“Yes I know you are already beautiful.. Just sit down and let me do some final touches to make you look fancy for your fancy dinner with your fancy boss in his fancy car”
“Geez Marty,you sound even more excited than I am”
“Of course I am. I can’t to get you out of your shell ,the world has so much to offer and you haven’t seen anything”
“You worry too much about me and my shell. This is not something I want to change”
“Well get ready to make room for adjustments sweetie because whether you like it or not they’re gonna kip coming”

Jimi was looking for his wristwatch in the living room, he was running late for the business dinner
“Ah Jimi you’re still here ”Philip asked as he walked out of the kitchen
“I know am running late can you help me look for my wristwatch, I can’t find it anywhere”
“Which of your wristwatches”
“The regular one…”
Philip pulled it out from the TV set
” is it this one”
“Oh yeah, where did you find it”
“Just here”
“And I’ve been searching the whole place since, why on earth will I put it here”
“Don’t you know you are very careless. Someone always have pick up after you ”
“Yes I know , and I won’t be going through this if that stupid Theresa didn’t pick me for the stupid dinner”
“You know you don’t exactly have a choice you are the face of our company ,you are not just smart Jimi, you are the total package and we need you to attract investors and partners for our company. So yes you are our best fix”
“If you weren’t my friend I would break your bones and feed it to dogs.”
“But thank God I’m your friend, you better hurry now you are running late”
“Are you chasing me away Philip. What are you hiding you mystery man. Are you expecting someone? Paula maybe.”
“Who’s Paula, am done with that babe abeg
For real.. Since When”
“Since recently …”
“Good for you And how did she take it”
“I really don’t care.. She has been calling non stop ever since”
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier, we could have celebrated your freedom”
“I’ll tell you all about after this dinner.. Now get going Jimi”
“Alright man but congratulations though ”
he smiled and rushed out of their apartment

The hall was filled with different executives from different important business company in Nigeria. Men and woman of various caliber all well dressed and enjoying the night out
Jimi wasn’t enjoying himself coming out here with Theresa was a big mistake.. She’s their project manager and she’s even older than him and she always made that point obvious.
Jimi was sulking at the bar he had shaken hands and hugged more than half the people in the hall and now he was exhausted. He couldn’t even remember most of their names and could barely recognize them. The room was too crowded for whatever reason
His eyes strolled around till they stopped moving at the sight of lady in black, Jimi tried to stop himself from staring but his eyes seem to be moving on its own, finally he moved towards her to get a better view when someone choose this time to approach him and block his view
“Hey. Jimi Benson right”
“Yeah”
“Well I just want to confirm if you have heard of Benson’s integrated services”
Jimi nodded of course it was his family’s business
” yes why”
“Nothing really just wanted to know if you are related to them in a way”
“How’s this any of your business”
“They are actually our endorsers at global source”
“Look mister I don’t have time for this, ask them yourself ”
he walked away and rushed to catch up with his lady in black.
when he got closer he realized a guy was holding her hand and they were in the middle of a conversation so he just decide to hang around feeling really stupid about himself, this is the lamest thing he had ever done
There’s just something about her that made him really curious, he just wanted to see her
Then he heard the lady’s voice, though he couldn’t see her because she had her back turned to him the whole time but the voice was so familiar, he listened attentively and this time he had very sure he had heard that voice before.. Oh of course it was Diana
He moved closer and his doubts were confirmed. What is she doing here?
“Diana… ” he whispered, she is the lady in black and she looked so beautiful that words failed him, everything about her was spectacular tonight
“Jimi …….”
she smiled at him flashing the two dots on each side of her cheeks
” good to see you here”
“Yeah same… You look fabulous”
“Thank you ” a voice alot deeper than Diana’s answered before she could respond making Jimi turn towards him
“Marcel Roland”
Jimi stared at him for the first time that evening
“Jimi Benson” he had this raspy tone edging his voice
“Oh you two know each other”
“Yeah I know him too well ”Marcel answered sarcastically
“That’s good I guess, but I’m exhausted, I can’t stand in this heels anymore pls can I just go home”
“Yeah sure I will take you home” Jimi offered
“No she’s my date tonight, I’ll take her home” he stated firmly
“I only offered because we stay in the same building, she’s my next door neighbor”
“What!” he glanced at Diana who nodded casually and he cleared his throat realizing he was thinking too far
“That’s how we know each other” Diana added
“I didn’t ask because this dude knows half the women in the world I just want you to be safe ” he whispered circling his hand on her waist
“Hello am still here and I can hear you”
That was no news to Diana, she knows exactly who Jimi Benson is and is not about to fall for his nonsense. So she stepped out of his hold
“Don’t worry about me Marcel, I’ll be fine, Jimi please let go.. Thank you for tonight Marcel ,it was a lovely evening I’ll see you on Monday”
He walked out of the hall with Jimi and Marcel’s burning gaze trailing behind them
