CHAPTER 23
Philip was standing outside about to knock on the door when Diana opened the door, Brady was lurking around him. He didn’t say anything so Diana was wondering what was going on
“Hey Phil.. Is everything okay?”
“Oh yeah, everything’s fine Diana, it’s just uhm… Is Martha in?”
“Nope, she left already”
“Ohh, it’s just she doesn’t call me to drop her off these days.. I tried calling her but she’s not answering I hope there’s no problem?”
“No, it’s not that she just doesn’t want to bother you anymore”
“Who says anything about bothering who. She knows I always want to drop her off ”
“I don’t know, maybe she just doesn’t want to impose”
He cracks ” am not complaining, but why won’t she just pick my call and at least find out if am available to drop her off or not, is there something you are not telling me”
Diana stepped out of her doorstep and move to the veranda standing closer to Philip
” why are you being so nice to Marty”
“I don’t get, is something wrong with being nice”
“No Phil, there’s nothing wrong with being nice.. You two have grown extremely close lately and Marty is just being careful”
“Careful.. about what, Wait! Does she think am going to hurt her or something. Is all this bothering her ”
“No of course not Philip, but in a way if she keeps this up she could hurt.”
“Am not following, Diana what are you trying to say?”
“How else do you want me to explain this”
“I don’t know, how about you tell me why Martha is avoiding me in simple English, did I offend her? Did I say something wrong, did I do something wrong?”
“I really don’t know what to say maybe you should ask her”
“She’s not picking my calls or replying my texts, I haven’t seen or heard from her in 3 days and I know she has been coming here”
“Well are you worried”
“Obviously…”
Diana sighed heavily leaning against the rails
” I’m only telling you this because you are my friend otherwise I shouldn’t disclose something like this because it’s personal to Marty …but sincerely speaking you are a little daft Phil and slow ”
he glares at her as she laughs at him
“Not funny”
“Am sorry I had to use those words but how can you not know that Marty has feelings for you… It’s so obvious she can barely hide it anymore.” He looked confused
“oh goodness Phil she has shown it in every way possible but you still don’t seem to get it”
Phil looks like he lost hold for words
“Look it’s OK if you don’t feel the same, it’s just too bad coz she thought after you were done with Paula ,you were going to perhaps ask her to be your girlfriend but since you didn’t push the buttons she felt you weren’t interested in her”
“I was.. ” he interrupted ” I am”
“What!”
“I do like Marty alot, she’s an amazing person, I mean how else did I summon the courage to finally break up with Paula.. Just so I can be good enough for her, I had no idea she feels the same”
“Then you must be blind. The signs were all over. She was waiting for you to make the big move”
“I did try to make my move but Jimi walked in on us the day we tried to kss and things have been really awkward between us since then. I realized she might be feeling awkward because she got caught in the moment and she doesn’t feel the same”
“Ohh you guys almost kssed. Wow that’s news to me ”
“Well I didn’t know whether to forge ahead after she literally stormed out that day like she was doing something wrong”
“You should have really just come out and admit your feelings to her and see what she feels about it”
“I was suppose to do that 3 days ago, on our way to her house, coz that seem to be the only time we get to really be alone but she didn’t wait for me to drop her off and since then she just literally zooms off and that’s like waving the red flag at me”
“Oh she had no idea, she was pissed for thinking she’s attracted to a guy who might never see her beyond the friend zone limit and it bothers alot”
“Martha is way more than a friend to me, I can’t imagine what it would Feel like to lose her over some small misunderstanding”
“So She needs to know how you feel about her, you need to express yourself to her”
“How do I go about this, you have to help me. Especially now that you’ve concluded that am apparently too slow”
They burst into laughter
“The truth is some girls like it slow and steady. One step at a time, you can even go ahead and date for seven years but Marty is not one of those girls. She needs someone who takes action head on and deal with it immediately. Not the dulling kind”
“Hmmmn that sounds like something someone I know would do but if I ask him for help he’ll continue to taunt me with it forever but you know martha better than anyone else. Can you just put me through”
“I’ll try my best, but you will do most of it, look Marty is not the kind of girl that needs long boring ro mantic gestures to lead her on and am sure you are not that kind of guy either …just go straight to the point now that you know she most likely wouldn’t reject you. Just do your thing and am sure everyone will be happy at last”
“Such a relief, I don’t know what I would have done without you Diana, am really sorry for yelling at you just now I was just infuriated”
“Oh it’s nothing, I understand”
“Alright I’ll go now, have a good night”
“You too”

Jimi was doing final touches for his presentation at work the next day, he sat on his bed with his laptop as he goes through the review
His phone rings, it was Simi calling. He hadn’t heard from her since he left the house almost two months ago
When they were younger they had been really close but growing up they started drifting apart they liked different things and do things differently,
Her sudden attitude to talk back at him or get furious whenever he gets involved with any of her friends gets him really pissed, which happens to be plenty or most of them by the way. So she no longer has regards for him
It wasn’t his fault that her friends liked what they see in him despite all she had told them about him they just keep coming,
It’s funny how girls are willing to share with him anything they discuss within their little circle of friends, which is mostly irrelevant to him but when his own. Sister keeps talking sht about him it pisses him off.
Jimi had really tried to not get involved with Nancy, she was Simi’s closest friend and they have been together for so long, that’s why his mom adores her.
But Nancy had ruined his self restraint towards her when she showed up at a party looking drop dead gorgeous and of course it had to be a party that bj had attended too..
One thing led to another and he made yet another mistake with her
He didn’t feel anything for her and he had led her on for months, and that had been his ticket out of the house, away from his mom and his overly dramatic sister .
Well, how else would he have been able to get a better version of himself, how would he have met Diana
He glanced at the phone again and reluctantly picked the call
“Hello”
“Hello Jimi ” simi answered from her end
“Yes madam how can I help you.”
“Is it so bad to check up on my brother”
“Don’t you think you are a little late for concern, it’s been too long I lost count”
“You didn’t bother to call me either”
Jimi hissed ” what do you want sola”
“Mom misses you, we miss you, I miss you, I hope you are doing OK”
“Am not a baby simi, am fine I’ll survive”
“You’re just so stubborn, nothing more”
“Do you have nothing meaningful to say than lecture me,, I have more important things to do”
“Actually dad will be coming home soon”
“What!”
“You heard me Jimi, Dad will be coming home soon”
“Soon when”
“You’ll have to find out yourself, you’re part of this family too jimi find out somethings on your own”
“Be serious simi, when is he coming”
“I don’t know when exactly”
“I think you do”
“Yeah maybe I just don’t want to tell you”
“Stop being childish and answer me”
“I thought you are busy, why don’t you get back to whatever you are doing which is probably messing around with a girl stupid enough to fall for you”
“Are you really trying to mess with me”
“I don’t just grow on the habit to mess with you big brother, I actually called to tell you dad will be arriving in Nigeria soon. ”
“Then tell me the day Sola, so I can be prepared”
“You don’t need to reschedule your life because I don’t think you have enough time to mend all the loopholes in your life before he arrives.
Besides you shouldn’t have a deadline for your attitude, you like being a bad boy well keep it up. If you are living right by your own opinion, then you shouldn’t be afraid of anything besides he’s your father too. Why don’t you call and find out when he is coming…. Oh that’s right you can’t call Mom because you are not actually on talking terms with your own mother”
“All that is my problem. What is wrong with you, if you need to vent find something to pu.nch on or scream your lungs out in the bathroom”
“I don’t have a dent on my reputation, I have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of”
“Am sure you are enjoying this”
“Very ”she laughs faintly
” actually no Jimi am not enjoying this.. You are not going to change and I have to deal with the fact that you are my brother. My only brother, how unfair is it that I got paired with the world most selfish playboy in the world ”
her voice turned sad
” I just wished there’s a way to renew you or probably cleanse you somehow so you can stop being the provocative heartless person that you are ..you don’t care about the after damage of your acts.
I don’t know why I am bothering myself to say all these. It’s not like you’re going to change, am sure the only reason you’ve not hang up on me is because you’re hoping that I’ll eventually tell you when dad will be arriving but guess what I’m smarter than that.

After Jimi dropped the phone, his mind continue to ponder, his conscience was beginning to bug him. Before now he didn’t really give a dmn about what his sister had to say but hearing her call him all sort of names tonight made him feel guilty.
He had not really been a good example to his sister. And now his dad would be returning home after a year or thereabouts of intensive care in Australia, his mom had nothing good to say about him and neither does his sister.
He had gone on with his life without caring about how it affects his family. He might never get the chance to continue in his dad’s footstep to own and control Benson’s corporation, he felt terrible, he turned off his system and lay down with his head in thought
