Diana and Marty sat on the floor in her living room they were picking beans for dinner while Abby was playing outside with Brady
“So Didi, tell me how was your outing, how was your visit to your in-laws”
“I already told you it was fine and can you stop already with this in-law label”
“Hmmm I don’t understand what am I supposed to call your boyfriend’s parents”
“Call them my boyfriend’s parents or Mr and Mrs Benson”
“Yeah whatever. They are our soon to be in-law”
Diana ignored her
“So”
“So what now!”
“What happened there”
“Nothing”
“That’s all you said, ain’t you going to gist me about how it went”
“What’s there to say”
“Cmon babes”
“Okay, their house is really lovely and big and his dad is a very nice man”
“Ok..”
“Ok. What” she raised a brow
“Go on”
“That’s all”
“What do you mean by that’s all.. Didn’t you guys talk at all, you were gone for hours, you spent most of yesterday there and you are telling me that’s all, what about his mom you don’t have any qualities to qualify her”
“I do, it just that I don’t feel comfortable talking about it”
“Why not”
“It’s complicated”
“Diana you need to figure out if you are having a complicated situation or you are the complicated one, Jimi took a big step introducing you to his parents and I just wanna know how you feel about it, am sure he is gonna wanna know how you feel about it”
“Honestly he is really cool about it , unlike you why are you on my case today”
“You just need to leave out of your head Sometimes, no offense but you are too restricted you don’t trust people and you find it even more difficult to love others”
“Well That’s not true.. I love you, I love Abby oh and my cousin Betty, the list goes on ”
“Didi you know that’s not what am talking about. You need to let people in, I mean that’s the whole point for starting out new. This constraints you attach to yourself is pushing away.
That how you are building a wall around yourself, I thought one of the reason you move to Lagos is to move on and start afresh”
“It is….”
“Well in case you haven’t notice, you are not exploring that fact… You are in a relationship and you cannot loosen up, let go of all those restrictions try and enjoy yourself”
“That’s what am trying to do”
“Okay tell me where do you picture yourself in five years”
“Oh oh this is getting serious, you are getting all lawyered up on me”
“Am serious Didi”
“Okay in the less five years I see Abby graduating basic school and moving to high school, five years maybe a long time but yeah Abby will be in high school”
“Oh okay what about you”
“What about me”
“You just said where you see Abby in five years what about you. ”
“What do you mean, abby is obviously a major part of my life. I see her doing great things and making me proud”
“We all want to see Abby doing great things but are you saying you’re just going to fold your hands and watch her grow the whole time”
“No I mean . I want to have achieved alot”
“Like what Didi, well As for me I want to be happily married with kids in five years I want to have a fast growing organic products business and I want to have explore some certain part of the world.
That’s where I see myself in the next five years”
Diana nods ‘well that makes sense’
“What about you didi….. Where do you see yourself in five years?”
She asked again
“Well I want to be working or preferably owe my own well established Ad agency . I want to be able to make impacts that contributes to the world as a whole. I want to be driving a range rover sports”
She was wearing a big smile on her face
“And traveling round the world and maybe sit on a beach all summer doing nothing but enjoying the cool breeze”
“Fantastic who knew you were a dreamer but because you never talk about it. It hard to tell what’s going on in that pretty little head of yours”
“Well I didn’t know that’s what you were trying to get outta me”
“That aside. Do you really not see Jimi in your future at all. I mean you make all these plans but they don’t involve him. Do you really just see him on a short term basis. Do you think this relationship you guys have right now will not blossom at all”
Diana click her tongue and sigh
“It’s not that but I don’t like to build my life around people that I cannot determine their own commitment so I let things just fall in place . You know what will be will be”
“Okay but on your own part are you willing to give him a trial at all. I mean the way I see it you are only taking from him you’re not giving anything in return”
Now Diana is getting pissed
“What’s that supposed to mean”
“Am just saying what have you offered in this relationship so far to make it stronger”
“What are you suggesting Marty. Make our relationship stronger …… how or by that do you mean open my legs to Jimi”
“No Diana, that’s not what am saying ”
“Did he put you up for this”
“Of course not”
“Then what are you saying coz it’s not making any sense”
“Am just trying to understand why you are on the fence with Jimi”
“Because am trying to protect my fragile heart goddmnit. If I let loose for one second he could rip it out of me”
Didi snapped unable to filter her words anymore.
Marty was not sure if she was treading on the right path, she just wanted Diana to open up
“look I know you had a ugly past but you shouldn’t let that limit you”
“That’s not the issue”
“Then what is it”
“You won’t understand”
“There we go again… You are shutting me out”
“I’m not”
“Then why can’t you just tell me what is bothering you”
“I think it’s just better for everyone this well but With time Marty things will fall in place… I’ll tell you when the time is right”
Martha rolled her eyes frustrated

Simi joined her mom at the veranda with two glasses of juice
“Mom , Here you go” she hands her a glass of juice”
“No sweetie I’m not taking that thing”
“Why not”
“It’s too sugary.. Am trying so hard to keep my sugar level normal”
“Oh mom, I hope it worth it.. You use to love this flavor”
“I will get over it”
“Where’s dad”
“He’s by the pool, he is having his session with the new therapist”
“I hope he’s adapting well, I mean you keep changing his therapist everyday”
“No I keep removing incompetent donkeys”
“Is it weird that all those donkeys happen to be female”
“What are you saying Simisola”
“Nothing mom” she gulps her juice. Her mom is an extremely jealous woman she wouldn’t let any one near her husband
“Am just glad dad is doing well”
“Better than expected, since yesterday he has been feeling happier probably because of Jimi”
“Oh that’s true… How was it”
“Very well… Your brother showed up with another fling”
“Why am I not surprised…. Thank God I wasn’t here, I might not be able to hide my disgust”
“Contrary to your expectations Jimi was actually on his best behavior”
“Really…. Probably because of dad”
“Yeah I guess so, but my major problem is that girl he showed up with, she’s seem manipulative and controlling”
“Sounds like what Jimi deserves. The last time we met, Jimi was too polite and friendly I don’t know what’s up, but the girl might be doing wonders. I know one day Jimi will carry something that is bigger than him and he will be locked in a box ” she giggles.
“How can you say such about your brother”
“But am not lying mom, someone really needs to put him in his place. He has done enough damage”
“You are his sister Simisola. You don’t get to defile your brother like that no matter what. Am just worried this girl is up to no good”
“Oh mom Jimi is a big boy he can take care of himself, all the hearts he has broken manage to survive one way or the other. Jimi will survive. He always does”
“You are being really selfish and I raised you better than that”
“so now am the selfish one, on countless occasions Jimi has trashed every other person’s opinion into the gutter and mess with their feelings. My best friend is still thinking somewhere in her mind that Jimi will come back to her yet my brother has jumped from one babe to another and you want me to be worried about what his girlfriend might be doing to him. I hope you invited her to the anniversary coz I would like to meet her personally and give her some tips”
“You are just being childish, you don’t understand what is going on”
“I dont want to…. Am going to check up on dad now am sure he won’t mind a glass of juice”
She picked the glass of juice and walked away

After Marty left, Diana was suddenly feeling so bad, it’s not like she’s being cruel she just couldn’t let all the fantasies get to her
Did she dream of a wonderful family life.
H’ll Yeah!.
She wants to be happy too but the road is too crooked so she had stopped making predictions long ago
While she was wearing herself out of her kind, she decided to call her mom they haven’t spoken in a long while so she just wanted to talk to someone who would take her mind off all this
Her mom picked on the second ring
“Ma”
“Omo…. Is that you”
“Yes mama, it me, are you not wearing your glasses”
“I left it somewhere on the table in the sitting room”
“Where are you”
“Am in the bedroom lying down
Is everything OK?”
“Yes ma, everything is fine I hope I didn’t wake you”
“No I was just saying my prayers”
“Sorry to disturb you,”
“Disturb ke, am so happy you called.. I was praying to hear from you.
You know my phone got spoilt and I lost your number.. Is even brother Ezekiel that gave me this small phone two days ago”
“Why didn’t you find a way to reach me”
“How… No one has your number they said you refuse to give them all my customers they said you don’t like to release your contact and now that we need it no one can provide it”
“Am sorry ma, I didn’t know something like this would happen I would have written my number on the wall, why didn’t you call Bethany”
“I didn’t want to disturb her, she would want to get me another phone and I don’t want her to spend, she has her own responsibilities”
“But still ma”
“It’s fine Didi, You called already and that’s settled”
“So how’s the restaurant and how’s your health”
“We are all doing fine. How’s my grand baby”
“She’s fine, she’s asleep… I’m really sorry ma for not calling you all this while. I have been really busy”
“It’s OK omo… I know you are not the phone person”
“Mama you know what, just send me that your account number, and I will try and get you another phone this week, I will waybill it to you”
“Oh Didi you don’t have to worry”
“Let me worry, You might not be Betty’s responsibility but you are mine”
She chuckles
“Oh dear thank you God bless you”
“Amen amen mama amen”
“So how’s Lagos, I hope no too much trouble o”
“No mommy, the stress is minimal, you know that my friend we went to school together Martha… She’s been helping me with everything and even Abby. Am working at a good company now the pay is very good too… I am living fine mama
That’s good to hear.. Am happy”
“We Miss you maami, Abby keeps asking of you, I will call tomorrow so you can talk to her”
“I will be expecting your call”
“Don’t worry when I send you a phone that can do video call you’ll get to see us as we see you too”
They talked about everything and anything until it was really late and they had to hang up…
