HIDDEN WIFE : CHAPTER 1 – 10

CHAPTER 8

THIRD PERSON’S pov.

Another room in KissMe karaoke

Mike stared blankly at the glass of Hennessy in his hand, he’s been holding this drink for thirty minutes without even taking a sip, meanwhile his friend’s already on his fifth glass.

“Change the music!” his friend shouted above the music, but nobody changed it.

His friend gulped down his drink and glanced at Mike, he sighed when he noticed Mike’s still on his first glass.

“Hey, man, you’re the brokenhearted here, but why does it seem as if I’m drinking on your behalf?” he asked.

Mike still didn’t move his eyes from the drink, he snatched the drink from Mike and slammed it on the table.

“Let out your feelings and don’t bottle ’em up, it hurts more when you try to bottle them”

“I’m not feeling hurt” Mike said.

“You’re not feeling hurt? Then why did you bring me here?”

Mike took a deep breath and leaned back on the sofa, he closed his eyes for a second.

“I just needed somewhere to clear mind” he said.

“Hm” his friend hummed and nodded his head in agreement.

“Rowland, am I wrong for breaking off our engagement?”

His friend (now known as Rowland) paused, he stared at Mike for a moment and sighed.

“That’s not the right question, the right question should be, did I really break off our engagement because she’s feeling insecure?”

Mike tilted his head, but remained silent and blankly gaze on the table.

“She’s not the problem here, Mike, you are.. you don’t love her”

“I do, I love her”

“No, you don’t, because if you truly love her, you wouldn’t break off the engagement so easily” Rowland reached for his glass. “What were you trying to prove breaking up with her? That she was right about you having an affair with your clients?”

“I….” Mike couldn’t find words to say, he simply shut his mouth and closed his eyes.

Rowland gulped down his drink and started pouring himself another glass, but stopped halfway when his eyes landed on Mike’s untouched drink, he reached for it because he knew Mike wouldn’t drink.

“Personally, I don’t like that Jacinta girl too, so, I’d naturally support your decision of breaking up with her, but…” he trailed off and tilted his head with a slight frown. “…both your parents have been friends from ages, you and Jacinta are childhood friends too, which was a guarantee to both your parents that letting you two marry is the best option for merging your respective family business…”

Rowland sighed deeply and shook his head.

“… now that you’ve broken up with Jacinta, do you think your parents would spare you if they find out about this?”

Mike remained silent as he’s deeply in thoughts, he lifted his body off the sofa and held his head in his hands.

“But… it’s because Jacinta doesn’t understand the nature of my job, she thinks I’m having affairs with all my female clients and I fear she might physically harass one of them someday” he said.

“I understand you, bro, but you’ve just worsened the case and confirm her suspicion, I… ”

Mike stopped listening to Rowland as his ears pricked up, when he heard a familiar voice singing very loudly and so out of tune.

“Rachel?” he questioned himself unsurely.

“Who? Rachel? Who’s that?” Rowland asked him.

Mike ignored his friend’s question and sprang up, then dashed out of the room and came face to face with a very drunk Rachel, and a tipsy Fatima.

“Come on, Rachel, you’ve sang enough for one night” Fatima tried to persuade Rachel to stop singing, but Rachel wouldn’t listen.

“Fatima” Mike called Fatima to make his presence known.

Fatima raised her head, but quickly scorned when her eyes landed on Mike and she glared maliciously at him.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“Oh, I was having a drink with my friend inside” he nodded towards the room he just came out of. “And I heard her voice” he nodded at Rachel. “Then I rushed out to check if I heard correctly, and I did heard correctly”

“Humph!” Fatima huffed.

She put an arm around Rachel’s waist and leaned Rachel’s body on hers, then started staggering towards the exit door.
Mike quickly rushed in front of them and stopped her.

“Are you sure you can get both of you home?” he asked.

“Yes, now make way!” she replied harshly, giving Mike no room for negotiation.

Mike quickly gave way, but unfortunately she and Rachel fell before she could take a step.

“I guess it’s best I give you girls a ride” he said.

Fatima wanted to say something, but he didn’t give her a chance to speak.

“Besides, you’re both drunk and driving in a drunken state is against the law”

“I’m not drunk” Fatima defended herself.

“But you have alcohol is flowing in your system right now, you don’t want the cops pulling you over and harassing you, right?”

Fatima glared at him for a few seconds, then nodded reluctantly.

“Fine, but don’t try anything funny with her!” she warned him, pointing at Rachel who’s still singing.

Mike nodded, he leaned down and swooped Rachel in his arms, then headed towards the exit door with Fatima rushing behind and glaring at him all the way.

Rachel soon fell asleep immediately her head rested on Mike’s chest, he looked down at her and smiled as he shook his head. This is the first time he’s seen her in a drunken state and he find it cute.

Someone suddenly grabbed Mike’s shoulder from behind immediately he made it outside, he turned with a questioning frown only to come face to face with a white baseball cap and a mask.

“Let go, man” he tried to shrug off the guy’s hand, but the guy’s grip was firm.

“First hand my woman over” the masked man said.

Mike scoffed.

“Hand your woman over? Who the fk are you to claim?” he asked.

“Her husband”

Mike’s frown deepened, he tilted his head to take a good look but still can’t recognize the mask man.

“The fk you’re her husband, s¢ram!” he growled.

“I said hand my woman over!”

Fatima suddenly started giggling when she recognized the masked man’s voice, then rushed to hug him and released a fan girl scream.

“You’re here, you’re finally here, Duncan!”

He slammed his hand over Fatima’s mouth and looked around to make sure there wasn’t anyone in sight that heard her, and fortunately, there’s no one.

He gestured her to shut up and withdrew his hand from her mouth.

“Bring your voice down, a paparazzo might be just around somewhere, don’t scream my name like that” he said.

He took off his mask, which made Mike gasp quietly and he staggered back slightly, he couldn’t believe Rachel’s husband whom haven’t showed up for years is actually standing in front of him tonight.

“Can you hand her over now?!” Mr Baldwin asked as he clenched his jaw.

“Yeah, hand her over to her rightful owner” Fatima chipped in while sticking out her tongue at Mike.

“I can’t, I’m barrister Mike, the lawyer working on her divorce and since she filed for divorce, it means she doesn’t want anything to do with you”

Mr Baldwin narrowed his eyes suspiciously at Mike, there’s a sudden deep hatred growing from the deepest part of his stomach, and he felt like landing a pvnch on Mike for supporting his wife and encouraging her to proceed with the divorce.

“I haven’t sign the papers yet, which means, I’m still legally her lawfully wedded husband and it’s best you hand her over to me now, or I won’t be able to control myself and give you the privilege to kss my fist!” Mr Baldwin said slowly, but scarily.

Mike looked down at Rachel who’s still singing in her sleep, he sighed and reluctantly handed her over to her husband.

“Goodnight” was all Mr Baldwin said, then turned and walked towards his car.

“Oooh, this is so romantic, I love the possessiveness and jealousy” Fatima gushed and quickly rushed after Mr Baldwin.

“You’re welcome” Mike said even though he wasn’t told ‘thank you’.

Mr Baldwin entered his car with Rachel still in his arms, Fatima also got in the passenger seat and the car took off.

Mike heard a Rowland’s familiar voice laughing behind him, then turned to him with a small frown.

“What are you laughing about?”

Rowland shook his head.

“Nothing” he answered. “He was just looking so cool handling you, if you broke up with Jacinta because of her…” he shook his head. “.. give up because you don’t even stand a chance against him” he tapped Mike’s shoulder sympathetically.

“Fk off!” Mike shrugged off Rowaland’s hand and headed towards his car.

“Be honest with me, do you love her?” Rowland asked, referring to Rachel.

“No, I have a fiancee…”

“Whom you’ve broken up with” he reminded Mike of the reason they came to the karaoke in the first place.

“…and Rachel’s a married woman”

“But she’s divorcing her husband soon”

“Say one more word about Rachel again, and I’ll leave you behind” Mike threatened him and he quickly shut his mouth, then rushed to the passenger seat.
