Chapter 2

Rika walked down the school hallways. The sun shine on her skin and she sparkled as she moved. She had let her hair down and she waved it from side to side as she strutted through the hallways in her school uniform. Contrary to her mood, the rest of the students in the school were looking gloomy.

She spotted her friend, Hunter and ran up to him. Hunter gave her a look.

“Why are you so happy?” Rika laughed. “What’s there not to be happy about?”

“Well for one thing more that half of the senior high class was arrested last week, you included. I don’t think that’s going to sit well with Principal Hakura.”

Rika laughed again, harder this time. “How did you even get out of that situation?” Hunter asked again.

Rika smirked. “I have my ways.”

Hunter stared at his friend. They had been….well friends for a long time but there were still times when he felt like he didn’t know who she was.

It was like the persona she showed to everyone was only ten percent of who she really was, as if her s!nister smiles and mocking words were just fronts to hide her true character.

It had taken him a while before he noticed that she had a sadistic nature, a fancy for hurting people. Back when they were younger he had thought she lived the perfect life. Her parents were so rich they could buy a small country. She got everything she wanted and he loved going to play with her. Until that day……

????

“Hey Rika could you please help me with my assignment? It’s due next week and I’m going to fail if I don’t turn it in.”

Twelve year old Rika Sato sat at the lunch table with her friend Hunter , barely casting a glance at the girl standing above her, pleading for help with her homework.

Rika was the smartest girl in their whole grade, but most people didn’t ask her for help because she usually always kept to herself. This girl must have been really desperate, Hunter thought to himself.

Rika answered, still not looking in the girl’s direction but staying focused on her food, “No.” The girl almost burst into tears.

“Please Rika! My dad will kill me if I fail again!”

Those words seemed to affect Rika, as she flinched ever so slightly, but Hunter still noticed.

Rika suddenly turned to face the girl, smiling sweetly at her.

“Okay Rio. I’ll help you! When should we do it?”
“Really?! Thanks a bunch Rika! How about Sunday evening since it’s due Monday morning?” “Fine with me. Let’s meet up at the library 7pm.” “Okay! Thanks again!”.

After the girl had left, Hunter asked his friend, “Didn’t expect you to give in. What made you change your mind?”

Rika slowly sipped on her strawberry milk. “Oh nothing. I just didn’t want her to get in trouble with her dad.”

Rika didn’t say a word after that. But something about her answer left Hunter feeling extremely unsettled.

The days rolled by and Monday came. As Hunter and Rika were making their way to class, a disheveled and crying Rio rancho up to them.

“Rika.” Rio choked out amidst tears. “You said you would help me. I arrived at the library like you said but you didn’t show. I called and called but your phone was switched off. Now I didn’t turn in the assignment and I failed!” Rio was wiping tears and snot from her face as she cried.

Rika put her arms on Rio’s shoulders. “I’m so sorry Rio. I came down with a cold yesterday, and my parents took away my phone so I could rest. I tried explaining to them but they wouldn’t listen. Please don’t be mad at me. I’ll make it up to you.” Her voice cracked as she spoke.

Rio wiped her tears. “No it’s okay Rika. I understand. You were sick. It’s just my dad is really mad right now. I think he might hate me.”

“Don’t be silly Rio. All our dads love us. They could never hate us. I’m sorry again. I’ve got to get to class now but I’ll treat you out to lunch.” “Okay.”

Rika waved goodbye as Rio walked away.

Hunter stared at her, fear all over his face.

“Rika, we were at the movies last night. You told me Rio cancelled.”

Rika faced him slowly, a smile forming on her lips. A smile Hunter would never forget in all his life.

“We’ll be late for class.” She said quietly as she walked away.

????

It was then that Hunter had known. And from he look Rika had given him back then, she had known that he knew. Who she really was. But was that even the whole truth? She was still hiding a lot of things, things he wasn’t sure he wanted to know.

“Hello? Earth to Hunter?” Rika said, bringing him out of his thoughts.

He smiled at her. “Sorry about that. Oh by the way. You’re needed in the Principal’s office.”

????

Rika sauntered into Principal Hakura’s office. Her family’s lawyer, Levi Akabane was seated on the left, looking as dashing as ever. Ever since that day at his office, Levi’s sharp piercing eyes and how quickly he had found out her lies gave her butterflies.

She felt a blushing creep up her cheeks. Standing on the right was her boyfriend, Damon. Ugh.

Principal Hakura began, “Miss Sato. I believe you know why you’re here. Your lawyer has already spoken to us about the situation. But I wanted to hear your testimony.”

Rika cleared her throat. “I didn’t want to go to that party that Damon threw, but he pestered me and when I didn’t budge, he tricked me into attending the party. When I was there, I decided to stay so as to keep an eye on him. When u found out they were all using, actually, I’m the one who snuck out to tell the neighbors to call the Police with a false complaint of noise pollution.”

Rika glanced at Levi as she finished her speech. She wasn’t lying about being the one who went to tell the neighbors to call the Police at least, but he was still staring at her with those cold, calculating eyes.

Her heart almost leaped out of her chest.

“Wow! Rika! That was very wise and Noble of you. I commend your efforts but you will still be disciplined for attending an unsupervised party. Mr Damon Aguilera. Do you have anything to say?”

Rika finally looked her boyfriend’s way. She saw the hurt in his eyes. “No sir.” He said.

Principal Hakura gave some more sermons, and finally Damon was suspended for two months and Rika was given detention for a week.

Well. She could live with that.

She and Damon were dismissed while Levi remained to talk with the Principal.

When they got outside, Damon grabbed her arm.

“Rika……!”

She looked at him coldly. He was almost crying.

“How….how could you do this? You….you said you loved me!”

Rika smiled as she leaned forward and kssed him on the cheek.

“I lied.”

She said as she removed her arm from his, and walked away confidently.
