I woke up early this morning to pack my bags to get ready to go to my parent’s house.

Like every morning, I woke up with mood swings and my hair looking like a giant birds nest.

I thought the mirror was playing an April fool’s joke on me when I saw my reflection.

After packing my bags I went into the shower.

I don’t think my parents would have called me if it wasn’t important, let alone my mother. I bet she got a private investigator to find my phone number.

My parents and I didn’t talk at all, maybe it was because we share a different view of life.

My mother once told me, having me as a daughter was worse than having no children at all.

After taking a shower I got dressed in black jeans and a t-shirt. I was all about comfort, jeans are my favourite.

My boyfriend Erik said he would come and pick me up to drive me there since it was a two-hour drive to my parent’s house. He didn’t want me to take a bus there, he said he wanted to make sure I was safe. I also think it’s a good opportunity for me to introduce Erik to my parents since we are kind of getting serious now.

“Babe, are you ready.” I heard Erik voice from downstairs as he walked in.

“Yes, I just need to take the bag to the car,” I yelled back.

I said this so that he can take the bags for me to the car and him being the perfect gentleman he did.

That always works. He came upstairs then helped me carry my suitcase and bag.

“What do you have in here?” he asked. I could tell he was struggling to carry it.

I had my clothes in and a couple of textbooks. I even bought my blow-dryer along, I wasn’t about to ask mom for it.

I took a moment to admire his muscles as he carried my bag.

“I’m a bit nervous about meeting your parents.” He said taking out his car key.

“Me too, my parent never allowed me to have a boyfriend when I was in high school,” I said and opening the boot for him to place the suitcase in.

“I’m glad.” He replied with a smirk on his face.

He placed the bags into the boot then closed it.

“Is someone getting jealous now?” I asked giving him a quick kss on his forehead. He was so much taller than me, I had to stand on my toes every time we kssed.

After that, we both started laughing.

“Hurry up, we don’t want to be later. I have a good first impression to make.” He said opening the car door for me.

“I just hope this goes well. You would be lucky if my mom even lets you into the yard. Sometimes she can be very selective.” I said to him.

“Do you think your mother will like me?” He asked scratching his head.

“Of cause not, there is no pleasing her,” I said getting into the car.

We first drove to Mc Donald’s first to get something to eat. I didn’t have time this morning to make something at home.

Our final stop was to my parent’s house. It felt like hours just sitting in the car and hearing Erik talk about his parents. Erik was adopted, he never talked about his birth parents so I never pressed on it because I knew that was a sensitive subject. His adoptive parents sounded like good people. Unlike mine, I had nothing good to say about them.

The problem was my mom, she had always managed to get my dad to do just about anything she wanted. She always dragged him into her mess. She was the reason why my family has split apart.

When we got to the gate we found William. I was surprised he was still here. He was the gateman, he is in charge of all who goes in and out of the house. He immediately opened the gate for us welcoming us in. He was my best friend. Sometimes I felt like I could talk to him more than I could talk to my mother.

“You have a beautiful house,” Erik said taking a look at the view.

Immediately the last women I wanted to see came out of the house.

My mother!

She was sitting outside reading a Cosmopolitan magazine.

I exhaled deeply as I got out of the car.

She didn’t even notice we had arrived until I stood right in front of her.

“Hi,” I said to her. The only word that could come out of my mouth.

She looked at me for a while as if she was trying to recognize me.

“I’m glad you here, you finally came back to your senses.” She said put her magazine aside.

Coming back to my senses would be me not stepping into this house at all.

I gave her a fake smile. I couldn’t see my expression but it probably looked more pathetic than those fake eyelashes she has.

“Thanks for driving my daughter, here is your tip.” She said handing Erik a hundred dollar note.

“No ma’am I’m..” Before he could finish I interrupted him.

“Mom, he’s with me,” I said.

“Who is he?” she said pointing at him.

“This is Erik, my boyfriend,” I said smiling at Erik.

It took her a while to process what I had just said. She just kept staring at us with a blank expression.

I told a few steps back then held Erik’s hand.

“Look here young man, I don’t ever want to see you in my house or anywhere near my daughter. Now get out of my house!” She yelled.

I knew this was going to end up bad from the looks she was giving him.

If looks could kill, his body would be rotting by now.

“Mother! what is the meaning of this, you can’t just ha.rass my boyfriend like that.” I yelled.

She lifted her hand to slap me but she suddenly stopped.

“Its OK sweetheart, I’ll go,” Erik said.

I tried to stop him but he would barge.

I watched as he walked away from me. Once again my mother had managed to destroy another one of my relationships.

“Mother, what is the meaning of all this,” I asked staring at her in h0rror.

“You shouldn’t be running around with all these worthless rats. Next month you will be getting married to Mr Greene’s grandson Charles so started acting like it!” She yelled.

At that moment the whole world felt like it stood still for a while.

I knew my mother was never one to joke.

My whole world had just shattered right before my eyes.
