“How is my baby doctor,” I said stroking my belly gently, my head rested on the pillow.

I was in a hospital bed, for my monthly check-up. Six months had already gone by.

For some reason, Nick’s been very supportive of my pregnancy. I’ve got a room full of baby clothes and toys. He has been to all my past doctors’ appointments but I insisted he remained outside (didn’t want to make things more awkward).

The doctor remained quiet for a while, his eyes fixed on a folder in front of him. I even noticed that he kept adjusting his glasses as if he was looking for a position that would help him see better. Suddenly, his eyes widen in shock as if he had just been given a death sentence.

“Is my baby alright?” I asked sitting up straight.

“I’ll be back in a moment,” He said before rushing out.

I needed to be calm, his actions were making me very nervous. Could something be wrong with the baby? I took my phone out of my purse. I had two messages, one was from Erik and the other from Nick.

The doctor walked back accompanied by another doctor. His face looked more relaxed.

“What is it doctor, is something wrong?” I asked.

“Please avoid contaminated foods.” The one doctor said.
“Do you have anyone who can look after you?”

“No,” I said shaking my head. “I don’t, I have no one.”

I was sitting on the bench waiting for my flight back home. In twenty minutes my flight would depart.

Just when you feel your life is going great, something bad happened.

Since my father was the one paying for all my doctors’ appointments that meant he was notified of my health. As soon as he was informed he called me and insisted that I returned home, where my ‘loved’ ones can look after me and incase anything was to happen to me, he didn’t want me to be alone. The way he said it, it was as if I was dying of cancer.

I listened as they announced the platform for my flight.

I dragged my feet towards the exit, my suitcase following behind me. My father was waiting near the exit with a huge smile on his face.

“Welcome home,” He said pulling me into a hug, I broke into tears in his embrace.

After a while, we finally moved to the car. He insisted that we go home, where he and mom could keep an eye on me.

*~*
We drove into the yard as I took in the view. The garden came into view, the swings I used to play on as a child appearing in the corner. Nothing had changed.

Mom was waiting for us, sitting on a chair by the veranda. She stood up the minute she saw the car pull in. Dad parked the car in front of the house even though he was the one to insist that cars should be in the parking lot.

I opened the car door then walked out, dad followed after with my suitcase behind him.

I walked to my bedroom. It was still the way I remembered except the books I had kept in a box where now neatly packed on the bookshelves. There was no tint of dust in the room, I could smell the fresh scent of lavender from the candle that was burning on my nightstand.

I sat on my bed then exhaled deeply.
I heard a soft knock on the door. I yelled softly “Come in,”. Dad came into view with hands behind his back.

“Your mom is quite angry, you didn’t greet her.” He said.

I glared at him as if to answer his question.

He sat on the bed beside me then placed his hand on my shoulder.

“The room next door could be the baby’s nursery. There is plenty of space here.” He said.

“There is no need,” I said. “I’m going back as soon as the baby is born.”

“I hope you change your mind.” He said. He gave me a small smile. “Come let’s go downstairs,” He said

”I don’t feel like”i said.

“Come on, your mom just wants to talk to you, besides Nora is on her way.”

Nora was my nanny growing up, even until high school. She’s like a mother to me. She stopped working for my parents after I left for college. She’s now on her pension.

I shook my head at him as he smiled victoriously.
As I stood up, I felt a sharp pain on my back but it quickly faded.

I walked downstairs making sure not to miss a step. Dad looked at me incredulously at how slow I was.

Mom was sitting on the couch staring at a picture of our family near the tv stand.
When she saw me, she glanced at me then looked away.

I walked to the couch then sat beside her.

She didn’t say anything, I could feel the awkward silence. Dad gave me a small smile then walked out.

“I’ll get you something to drink,” She said.
She then walked into the kitchen.

I rested my head on the couch, taking deep breaths.
Mom walked back in with a cup of tea in her hands. She handed me the cup then spoke, “Drink this, it will help you feel better,” She said.

I took a sip as my body began to relax.

At first, she was completely silent, only hearing the sound of me sipping tea. She finally spoke.

“Believe it or not, I had three miscarriages before we had you. It’s another reason we never tried again.”

“Must have been terrible,” I muttered.

“It was,” She said downheartedly. “I know I might have been hush but I wanted the best for you, I just didn’t think it would make you miserable. I’m sorry. Your happiness is what’s important.”

I pulled her into a hug, this time I didn’t feel like I was forced to do it for the cameras or anyone, it felt good. I felt like I finally had my mother back.

“I can’t wait for my grandchild to be born,” She muttered.

“So, what do you do for a living,” I asked taking a sip of my coffee.

“I work in a law firm, I’m a lawyer,” Sandie replied

This was my fifth blind date this week. A friend of mine suggested that I kind someone new. Most of the women I met were psychos. Turns out it’s so much harder to find someone who loves you when you’re rich.

“It was great meeting you, I hope to see you again.” She said, her smile reaching her checks. “I have to go, I have a meeting in thirty minutes,” She said her eyes fixed onto her watch.

I smiled in return.

“It was great meeting you too,” I replied.
