“Why exactly should I come?” I said over the phone.

“Because the whole family is going to be there,” Mom replied. “Don’t you want to meet your sister?”

“Half-sister,” I muttered. “How are you comfortable with having her around, it’s not too late to divorce him,” I whispered.

She sighed deeply, “This family has been broken for a while and I think it’s time we fix things. Bring your girlfriend Sandie along.”

“She’s not my girlfriend mom! we just friends.” I yelled.

She hanged up the phone before I finished answering.

Mom’s having a family dinner this weekend. She’s been nagging me about it all week.

I could already imagine my conversion with Sandie, our relationship status was quite complicated right now, asking her to meet my parents would make things more complicated and awkward.

“How do I look?” Sandie said slowly turning around.

“You look great,” I said gibbering in between the sentence.

She smiled at me shaking her head. “Let’s go,” She said grabbing my arm.

We walked towards the car, her hand intertwined with mine.

*~*

Pulling into the driveway, the house looked empty with only a few lights on. I crossed over to the other side of the car opening the car door for Sandie.

Looking from the corner of my eye, I saw mom peeking through the window with a smirk on her face.

Sandie held onto my hand tight, I could tell she was nervous. “Don’t worry, they will love you,” I whispered to her.

Walking into the house, the maids were running up and down to the dining room. I’ve never seen this house as busy.
I heard the sound of laughter in the family room.

“Sir, they’re waiting for you in the family room,” One of the maids said.

I nodded at her.

Sandie followed after me holding my arm tighter.

Everyone was in the family room, Michael and Kate on the pion, dad with a whiskey in his hand trying to get a glance at the score of the cricket match on the TV. Mom was scanning through a wedding magazine.

Everyone stopped what they were doing the moment they saw us walk in. Mom walked right pass me then pulled Sandie into a hug. “I’m so glad to finally meet you, we’ve heard so much about you,” Mom said. Next, it was Michael.

For a moment it was as if I was a ghost and that I didn’t exist. As always, Kate and I didn’t talk much, she just nodded at me instead.

Mom pulled Sandie over and offered her a seat right where she was sitting earlier.

Everyone continued to ignore me.

I took a seat across the room then took out my phone to look at the latest car models since no one was interested in having a conversation with me.

Mom took the magazine she was reading earlier and waved it to Sandie. “What do you think about this dress, I absolutely admire the designer.” Mom said.

At that moment, I knew exactly what mom was trying to do.

“Mom!” I whisper yelled.

“What, can’t I look at wedding dresses? It’s not like you’re getting married or giving me grandchildren.” She whined.

“Ma’am dinner is ready,” the maid who welcomed us earlier said, her hands behind her back addressing us formally.

“Okay, let’s go eat,” I said breaking the silence.

“Not now, we’re waiting for your brother,” Mom said.

“Why do we have to wait for him?” I questioned.

“Because this is supposed to be a family dinner, besides he’s bringing someone with him.”

Growing up, Dad always had a say in everything but now, the roles had turned. He didn’t argue. He knew mom had the last say.

I exhaled deeply resting my head on the couch then continued scrolling on my phone.

“How about this one?” Mom said to Sandie for another one of the dresses.

“Oh boy,” Michael muttered. Even at sixty-five mom’s hearing was still pretty impeccable. She heard him.

“You know what, I’m sick of this!” Mom yelled throw her hands in the air.

We all looked at her in disbelief.

“Michael, it’s time you get married and move on.”

“Why me? am I your next target?” Michael whined.

“I’m having this conversation with Nick as well as soon as he gets here.” She paused. “I only have this long until this cancer kills me, I want to see my grandchildren before I died.” She muttered.

I could see the sadness in her eyes.

My mother was suffering from cancer and none of us knew. Just when I thought I couldn’t lose anyone else.

“I’m sorry mother, I had no idea,” Michael muttered.

“At least Charles tried to make his marriage work, what’s your excuse?” Mom yelled.

Michael started running his hand through his hair, I could tell he was nervous.

“Girls think I’m too ugly.” He said softly, although it sounded more like a question.

“Trust me, if Charles could find someone so can you.”

We all turned to find the source of the voice.

It was Nick standing in the doorway with a smirk on his face.

Behind him was Elizabeth with eyes wide open as if she saw a ghost.

The moment I set my eyes on her I felt like my soul was set on fire, everything I’ve been trying to bury was dogged right out.
She looked at me for a second then ran out of the room.

*Earlier that day*

“Come out, let’s see how the dress looks on you!” Mom yelled through the door.

I had my back pressed against the door still convincing myself whether I should come out or not.

I tried ripping the dress on the hem, maybe if they realized it was broken they wouldn’t force me to go but I ended up nearly scraping my hand.

I sighed defeatedly then opened the door slowly. Mom was staring at me in aww and Nick behind her arms folded.

“You look great,” he said.

“Why do I have to go?” I questioned.

“You’ll be accompanying me.” He answered.

“Where exactly are we going?”
“It’s a surprise,”

“You don’t have to wear those high heels, you can wear flat shoes,” Mom said.

“It’s okay, I can walk in them,” I replied.

“You owe me,” I said glaring at Nick.

“Have fun!” Mom yelled as we walked out.

Nick had his Jeep parked outside the house. “What do you do for a living?” I asked.

He had so much money, owned several cars and a mansion in the eastern suburbs yet I’ve never seen him work a day in his life.

“I own a few shares in B and co, they sell boats.”

He opened the car door waiting for me to walk in.

“I don’t feel well,” I lied, my hand on my belly.

“You are fine,” Nick muttered shaking his head in disbelief.
He helped me into the car. I tighten my seat belt before he finally drove off.

“We’re here,” Nick said shaking my shoulder.

I open my eyes slowly adjusting to my surroundings. I had fallen asleep. We were in a parking lot, in front of us was an estate House painted in white (if I could see correctly) the lights outside the house were off giving the house a haunted house kind of feeling. It looked almost as if no one was at home. The place looks so familiar yet so unfamiliar at the same time.

“Are you sure there’s someone here?” I questioned, still rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.

“Yeah,” he replied.

I walked out of the car, Nick leading the way. As soon as we walked in, I could smell the familiar aroma of homemade food. It enhanced every craving in my body.

It was so much warmer in here.
A few maids crossed our path going in opposite directions.
I followed as Nick lead the way.

“Trust me, if Charles could get someone so can you,” Nick said leaning onto the doorway.

I stopped in my tracks the moment I heard their voices. In front of me was the Greene family including a few unfamiliar faces.

My heart stopped the moment I saw Charles as he stared into my eyes with his grey ones, I was having a panic attack.
I did the only thing I felt was logical, I ran out as fast as my legs could carry my baby and me.
Just as I was about to reach for the doorknob, I felt hands on my shoulder. I nearly had a heart attack.

“Calm down!” Nick yelled.

“Don’t do that to a pregnant woman!” I yelled breathlessly, breathing heavily.

“Come on, let’s go in,” he said.

“I can’t,” I replied, “I just can’t,” I said shaking my head.

“Everyone is waiting for you, they all want to see you.”

“I don’t think I can face them right now,” I whispered.

“Just give it a go, if you can’t I will personally drive you home. I promise I will never make you do anything you don’t want to do.”

He said. “Come on,”

I sighed defeatedly. “Fine,” I said.
He placed his hand on my upper back then once again lead the way.

This time walking back in was more awkward than the first.
I had to face them and this time there was no running away.
Everyone turned to look at me the moment I walked in. Thank God for make-up otherwise, my checks would have been bright pink.

“Elizabeth, this is my sister Kate,” Nick said gesturing to a redhead sitting on a bench with Michael by the piano.

I gave her a small wave with half a smile and so did she.

“You know mom and dad, and Michael.” he continued.

Michael nodded in my direction acknowledging my presence. Something felt different between Michael and me, he didn’t smile at me the way you used to. There was this unspoken tension between us, it felt forced.

“You know who over there,” Nick said pointing to Charles. “And this is…”

“Sandie, I’m Sandie,” She replied.

“Hi, nice to meet you,” I said.

“Nice to meet you too,”

I took a seat next to Kate. Charles was on the other end of the room, Sandie and Mrs Greene were sitting on the couch in the center of the room.

Nick and Mr Greene were standing in the corner by the fireplace, they seem to be in an argument.

“So, are you Elizabeth?” Kate said bringing me out of my thoughts.
“Yes, I said.

“The Elizabeth?” she asked again.

Now I was struggling to understand whether she was trying to annoy me or just plain dumb.

“Yes, I’m Elizabeth,” I said a little annoyed.

“And you are pregnant? Don’t you think it was a little too soon? I mean you and Charles were together not too long ago. Were you having an affair?”

I glared at her, I felt like slapping her. She was trying to provoke me and it was really working.

I looked over at Nick, maybe I could convince him to drive me home. I read his lips as he whispered ”Calm down,”.
I was infuriated.

“Is anyone else hungry,” Nick asked.

“We were waiting for you two actually Mrs Greene said. “Let’s go,” She said leading the way.

The dinner table was already set, the room was filled with antiques, things you would find in the seventeen hundreds. In the center of the room, there was a huge rectangular table.

I set in between Kate and Michael. Nick, Charles, and Sandie on the opposite side and Mr and Mrs Greene on the two ends.

I felt my stomach grumble as they served us the main course, lucky no one heard it.

“Please dig in,” Mr Greene said.

I wanted to say that we forgot to say Grace but I was quickly interrupted. “So Sandie, Charles tells us you’re a lawyer.” Mr Greene said.

“Yes, our firm is also working on a new project to help kids in Cambodia.” She said.

“That sounds great,” Mrs Greene said.

It was official, I suck at life. Sandie was this beautiful, well-accomplished person and I hadn’t even finished my doctorate. Maybe it was time I gave up and be realistic, I was never going to be a doctor so many years of my life had already been wasted and being a single mother wasn’t going to be easy.

I m0aned to the taste of the cheesecake on my tongue but luckily no one heard it.

“Elizabeth, you seem hungry.” Mr Greene said.

Kate chunked.

Before I could answer Charles interrupted. “Dad, she’s eating for two people. Have as much as you want,” he said.

Charles glanced at me before returning his focus to his food. I could tell he was avoiding eye contact.

“You and Nick seem very close,” Kate whispered to me.

“I guess,” I whispered back doubtfully.

“Is he the father of your child?” She said.

I choked on my food. Mr Greene offered me a glass of water, it took me a while before I finally cooled down.

“Take it easy on the food,” he said.

Throughout this night, I felt like I had been insulted more tonight than I had been in my entire life. I tears began to whelm up in my eyes but I quickly blinked it away.

“Sandie, there are more salads if you want.” Mrs Greene offered.

The rest of the dinner went the same way. Full of indirect insults thrown at me. I completely lost my appetite, I felt welcomed and unwanted. To them, I was a pest.

“Thanks for dinner,” I said my food still untouched.

Everyone stood up from the table to the family room. Mrs Greene dragged Nick out of the room holding him by his ear. On my way out I bumped into Charles.

“Hi,” I said awkwardly.

“Hi,” he replied.

This was it, I was finally going to tell him the truth. That he is the father of my child. I couldn’t be so selfish, he deserved to know the truth.

“Charles, you the…” I begin, before I could finish I was interrupted.

“There you are babe, let’s go. We have a big day tomorrow.” Sandie said. She placed a kss on his lips making it longer than necessary. I’ve never been more disgusted in my life, I felt like puking.

I coughed loudly interrupting them.

“Sorry, I didn’t realize you were there,” Sandie said. “Sweetheart we have to go now,” she said to Charles.

“Bye,” Charles said. “We’ll talk some other time.” He said.

They both walked away holding hands as I watched them disappear down the hallway.

To my rescue, Nick came back his cheeks pink and his voice deep and shaky.

“Come on, I’ll drive you home.” He said.

Those were the two words I’d been waiting to hear for this whole evening. This time, I was the one to lead the way.

I rested my head on the car seat taking deep breaths.

“Are you okay,” Nick asked. “I’m sorry about tonight.”

“I’m fine,” I said.

“I had no idea about Sandie and Charles. I shouldn’t have brought you here.”

“It’s okay, can we go now!” I yelled.

He gave me one more look of contempt before driving off.
I didn’t talk to anyone or make any I contact on my way to my bedroom.

That night, I cried myself to sleep. I’ve never felt more miserable before. I just wish that when I wake up in the morning this pain would all go away.
