MARRIED TO A STRANGER

Lara was still trying to sort out the bank transaction that Mr. Benson had requested as a matter of urgency, her mobile data had chosen the worst time to run out and she didn’t have much time to start the whole re-subscription process so she had asked to use Jeff’s phone; she had been so engrossed in carrying out the transaction that she didn’t suspect a thing when Jeff also asked to be excused just a couple of minutes after Lola left the table.
Everything was going smoothly and she was just about to click the “send” button to complete the transaction when a message came into Jeff’s phone, usually, she wouldn’t bother to read his messages but this time the message was from Lola. “Why is Lola sending Jeff a message when they are both here?” She thought, “that doesn’t make any sense at all” She abandoned the transaction she was carrying out and navigated the phone to Jeff’s inbox to see what the message was all about, “meet me at the bathroom NOW!” the message read.
She stared at the phone in disbelief after reading the message, could she really have read correctly? Why would Lola ask Jeff to meet her at the bathroom? What could possibly be the explanation for that?she decided she was going to the bathroom to find things out for herself, figuring that was where Jeff probably went. Just as she was about to leave, the waiter arrived with the dessert, “here you go ma” he said setting the bowls of ice cream and cake on the table, “thank you” she replied without looking at him, “I’ll be right back”,“back from where ma?” the waiter asked looking at the empty table, “you haven’t paid for your meal” he said stopping her, “yes I know that” she responded getting irritated, “I said I will be right back”,“ma…the table is empty, I can’t let you go just like that. What’s the guarantee that you’re going to return?” the waiter asked, “I find that quite insulting” Lara replied, “are you implying that I’m running away?”She asked even more irritated, “no ma! I’m only saying that I can’t let you go when the table is empty because I don’t have any guarantee for your return” the waiter replied. While they were busy arguing, Jeff showed up behind the waiter, “what’s the matter?” He asked noticing the ongoing argument, “maybe I should ask you ” Lara said turning to face him, “Me?” Jeff asked pointing to himself, “how do you mean?”,“where did you go? You’re the cause of this embarrassment to start with” Lara retorted, “I only went to the bathroom” Jeff replied, “to do what?” Lara barked, “what else do people go to the bathroom for? To ease myself of course” Jeff replied acting confused, “madam na wa for you o, which kind question be that one? Wetin pesin deygo find for bathroom before?” the waiter interrupted suddenly switching from well spoken to pidgin English and shocking Lara with his audacity.
