MARRIED TO A STRANGER

Episode 31
Just then the doorbell rang. “That must be the inspector” Aunty Fanny said, “perfect timing if you ask me, I’d like them to listen to what you have to say too.” “I’m not sure I want them to listen, I don’t know what they’ll make of the story” Lola replied avoiding her stare, “is there something you’re not telling me?” She asked giving Lola a stern look, “no, not at all” Lola stammered, “then why are you so afraid of the police?” She asked, “did you play any role in Jeff’s murder?”“Of course not!” Lola replied shaking her head frantically, “so what’s the issue? Speak up, we haven’t got all day” Aunty Fanny replied getting impatient, “I’m not connected to Jeff’s murder in any way but some things I have to say might be implicating” Lola replied, “how do you mean?” Aunty Fanny asked, “I did some things I’m not proud of, I’m too ashamed to even say them out. I’m only opening up because it might be helpful for the ongoing investigation” Lola replied looking at Aunty Fanny with eyes filled with tears.
The door bell rang again and Aunty Fanny headed for the door, “I don’t know what you’re about to say but as longas it doesn’t implicate you in Jeff’s murderthen nothing will happen to you” she assured, “are you sure?” Lola asked studying her expression to see if she really meant it, “I’m giving you my word” she said beating her chest, “nothing will happen…. Let me get the door,I’ll be right back” she said rushing to the entrance door as the doorbell rang a third time.
After finally letting the officers in and offering them seats, she called out to Lola to join them in the living room. “I think my nephew’s sister-in-law might have some useful information to help with your ongoing investigations” she announced, “really?!” one of them exclaimed, “how did she come about this information?” he asked, “I don’t know,let’s hear from the horses mouth” Aunty replied calling out to Lola again, “what about the identification of the body?” the other officer asked, “that can wait!” the other snapped cutting him short, “after all it’s mere formality, we already recognise that it’s him” he whispered keeping a straight face, “let’s hear what she has to say, then she can accompany you to identify the body” Aunty suggested as Lola walked in and sat down. “Please go ahead” she beckoned to Lola to speak, “we’re listening.”“It all started one night when I went for a shift at a club I recently started working in.”
Lola began, “which one of the clubs?” Aunty Fanny asked, “is it the sports club down the street from your house? I wasn’t aware you were working there now” she questioned curiously, “no it’s not” Lola replied, looking at the floor so she wouldn’t have to stare at their faces, “it’s a strip club” “Strip club? You? Lola? Strip club?” Aunty Fanny asked in shock, she was beginning to get hysterical, “please calm down Ma, let’s hear her out” one of the officers interrupted, “carry on, we’re listening” he beckoned to Lola to continue, “Jeff and Franklin, a friend of his came to the club that night”“Jeff?” Aunty Fanny interrupted again, “Jeff isn’t one to patronise strip clubs”“Kindly let her finish MA” the officer hissed irritatedly, “I know he’s not”, “Lola continued, “he actually confessed later on that he was lured by Franklin” she explained.“Franklin wanted me so bad that night, I could see the lustful look in his eyes. I wastoo embarrassed to do anything because of Jeff’s presence, so I left the room” Lola continued as they all listened intently, “The following week, Franklin came back to look for me at the strip club but I refused to give him any treats because he was Jeff’s friend and as a rule, I don’t work for friends and family” she explained, “when I told him this, he got really furious, but I did nothing about it” she narrated further, “one thing led to another and things happened between Jeff and I”,“Things like what?” Aunty Fanny asked putting her hands by her waist, “we slept with each other” Lola replied still looking down at the floor, “you did what?” Aunty Fanny asked standing up, she looked like she was going to have a heart attac.
