CHAPTER 39
MEGAN’S HOSPITAL**
Valerie could be seen sitting on a chair as she cried silently. Her eyes where all red and puffy but the tears were still coming out.
Beside her laid Hailey on the bed, her machine beeped silently as she had her eyes closed. Suddenly, her finger shook and then she slowly opened her eyes.
Valerie felt some movement on the bed so she looked at it and her eyes widened when she saw Hailey awake, staring blankly at the ceiling..
“Valerie,,, where’s Oliver. Where’s my husband?” Hailey turned to Valerie.
Valerie closed her mouth, trying to stop the new rounds of tears that was forming in her. She sniffed in and cleaned her tears..
“Mom,, dad is…” Valerie broke down in tears.
Hailey made her place her head on her chest as she rubbed her back, shedding fake tears too…
“Why mom… Why” Valerie cried.
The door to Hailey’s ward suddenly swung open and they both turned to see it was Nicholas who was panting heavily.
“Valerie,,, I’m so sorry. I rushed here when I heard the news” Nicholas said.
“Nick..” Valerie ran to him and hugged him tightly, crying her eyes out..
“I’m sorry Val.. It’ll be okay” Nicholas rubbed her back and kissed her hair.
“Brittany” Nicholas said inwardly. Too bad he doesn’t even know where she lives..

THE MORGAN’S**
“She’s waking up…” Gracie said and Alex rushed to her.
Gracie begged Jessica to go to work so that she wouldn’t be in trouble with her boss again.
“Mommy” Alex said and touched her cheek.
Earlier he wanted to cry but Gracie assured him, telling him that Brittany was just tired and needed to rest.
Brittany slowly opened her eyes and stared blankly at nowhere in particular. She slowly sat up and looked at Alex.
“Mommy,,, you scared me” Alex said, fighting back his tears.
Brittany forced a smile, rubbing his hair…
“I’m okay” She said.
“I need to go to work Alex. You stay with Granny okay?” Brittany said.
“But mommy you just-”
“Listen to your mother Alex.. She needs to go to work, don’t worry you’ll see her tonight” Gracie said and forced a smile.
“Okay… Take care mommy” Alex relented and Brittany nodded.
She picked up her handbag then waved at Alex before leaving the house. Gracie sighed silently..
She knows how Brittany was feeling right now. She did all that not to worry Alex..
Brittany closed the door behind her and she slowly sat down on the floor with her eyes closed as tears streamed down her cheek..
She closed her mouth as she sobbed silently, the video and images replaying back in her head. First was her mother, then Paula and now her father.
Her phone began ringing but she didn’t even bother to see who was calling her.
“Why?” She asked herself as she sobbed silently…

MEGAN’S HOSPITAL**
Nicholas stood out of the ward as he called Brittany for the fourth time but she wasn’t picking. Well he got her number from her résumé.
He sighed and kept back his phone.
“I hope she didn’t decide to do something stupid” He thought..
Meanwhile inside the ward, Valerie and Hailey where busy discussing with their lawyer.
“And so as his will says, Mr Oliver Rodriguez hands over all of his properties to his second daughter, Valerie Rodriguez” The lawyer read from the paper.
“You know what that means Miss Valerie.. You’ll now be the new CEO of his company and you’ll inherit all his properties.” The lawyer said.
Valerie looked away and slowly nodded.
“I’ll do that for you dad..” She said inwardly, fighting back her tears..
Nicholas stood outside waiting for them to finish discussing what they were doing inside when suddenly Ruby and Sandy ran to his direction.
“Nick!! How’s Valerie?” Ruby asked breathing heavily.
“She’s fine.. They’re having some private discussion… You can’t enter right now” Nicholas said and Ruby nodded..
“Gosh! This is so sad” Ruby muttered and Nicholas nodded.
He looked at Sandy who was staring intently at him. He simply rolled his eyes and left..

Brittany stood in front of the glassy window. She placed her hand on it as she stared at a body which had a white garment covering it completely.
Well she was currently in the same hospital as Valerie and the others..
“Dad…” Brittany muttered as tears streamed down her cheek.
All the memories they had together, starting from when she was little till when she grew up. How her father will always tell her stories before she goes to bed.
Ever since her mother died, Oliver has been like a mother and a father to her. He made her not to miss the void her mother left in her heart.
He believed her when everyone blamed her, when everyone turned their back on her he still believed her…
Only the thought that she won’t be able to see his smile, to hold him again was enough to kll her.
Nicholas brought out his phone to call Brittany again when suddenly a phone began ringing nearby. He turned to his right and saw Brittany standing by the window.
“Brittany…” He called coming closer to her.
Brittany turned back with red eyes just to see Nicholas.
“Sir-” Brittany gasped when Nicholas wrapped his hands round her, rubbing her back soothingly.
“I know it hurts so much, I’ve been there… Just cry it all out, let it out and you’ll feel better.. Don’t worry I’m here” Nicholas whispered to her.
Brittany closed her eyes and slowly wrapped her hands round him, crying her eyes out. Her shoulders shook so much as she cried.
Nicholas just rubbed her back with a straight look on his face. If there’s anyone who can relate, it’s definitely him..
“You’ll be fine” He muttered.

LILLY’S RESTAURANT**
Jessica sighed and sat down as she began staring into space. All these is just like a bad dream to her.
“Jessica… Jessica!!”
Jessica jolted back to herself when she heard someone calling her. She looked up to see it was Rhett.
“Rhett..” She muttered.
Rhett crouched down in front of her.
“What’s wrong? You look sick” Rhett said and touched her forehead..
“Your temperature is normal though” He muttered.
“I’m fine just that I feel bad for the Rodriguez family.” Jessica said.
“Yeah, that sudden death must be really tragic” Rhett said..
“Yeah…” Jessica sighed.
“So how was your date?” Jessica changed the topic.
“Well was super nice and fun. Never knew Ashley had this side of her…” Rhett smiled and bit his lips.
“Okay cool” Jessica frowned and looked away..
“Why the sudden change of mood?” Rhett asked.
“Nothing, let’s get back to work” Jessica said and stood up but Rhett pulled her back down.
“Are you jealous?” Rhett raised a brow.
“No! How can you think that?!” Jessica rolled her eyes..
“But your ears always turn red when I mention Ashley and I… And you end up frowning” Rhett said.
Rhett suddenly smirked and leaned closer to her.
“Don’t tell me it’s what I’m thinking,, you like-”
“Stop thinking stupid things!” Jessica pushed him off. She scoffed and left..
Rhett laughed and his laugh turned to a frustrated sigh..
“I need to ask mom if she took a love potion when she was pregnant of me… I just don’t understand anymore” Rhett sighed and stood too.

SUNSET, AT THE PARK**
Nicholas and Brittany sat down on the bench as they watched the kids playing with their kites.
“Valerie told me that tomorrow will be the burial” Nicholas spoke and turned to Brittany.
“You coming?” He asked as the wind disheveled his hair.
Brittany brushed her disheveled hair to the back. She wasn’t longer crying but now held a blank look on her face.
“I don’t yet know” Brittany replied.
Her phone suddenly began ringing and she looked at it to see it was Matteo calling. That made her to look up at Nicholas.
“Won’t you answer it?” Nicholas asked and she shook her head, swiping red.
“I wonder how I’ll tell my son. Yunno he doesn’t know he has a grandpa imagine he finds out that he has one but is death..” Brittany sighed.
“Sorry..” Nicholas muttered..
“Since Aidan is the father then that makes Xavier the grandfather too but too bad that man is as good as useless” Nicholas added.
Brittany turned to him.
“Why do you say that?” Brittany asked and Nicholas went quiet..
“It’s okay if you don’t wanna tell me though” Brittany said and looked front.
She slowly folded her fists tightly in anger. There’s no one else who can do this but Hailey but unfortunately she has no proves.
“Why is she doing all these?” That’s the question she’s been asking herself all along.
“I swear it Hailey,, if I find out you’re responsible for this. I’m gonna kll you with my own hands” Brittany thought as she glared at nowhere in particular..
Nicholas just looked at her. He suddenly stood up.
“It’s getting late, we’ve spent more than two hours here. Let’s get going, I’ll drop you home” Nicholas said.
“Thanks”

“BREAKING NEWS: BRITTANY RODRIGUEZ HAS BEEN RELEASED UNDER CONDITION BY THE POLICE FORCE… THE CONDITION WILL REMAIN PRIVATE TILL FURTHER NOTICE”
That’s the second news that has been trending the whole net since 6am when it was released. Some where happy while some where angry..
Some who saw her but thought it was a lookalike were stunned and amazed.
Well Valerie and Hailey haven’t yet heard about the news because of the burial preparation…
Talking of the burial preparation, everyone were present at the burial ground. Hailey got discharged so that she can attend the burial ceremony.
She could be seen on a wheelchair while Valerie was the one pushing her around. Ruby, Kenneth, Sandy, Aidan, Xavier, Savannah, Ashley, Evan, Nicholas, Zayne and many others where present to pay their homage. Everybody were dressed in black and held white roses in their hand.
Oliver was a good man and anybody who heard about this were so sad..
The police, news, photographers, reporters were all present, dressed in black too.
Doris was arrested and detained while the police men carried out thorough investigation on what happened.
“Let the ceremony begin” The priest who was the only person dressed in white said and opened his bible.
The noise of a car stopping at the roadside made everyone turn to that direction.
The door of the taxi opened and a little boy dressed in black got down the taxi. He turned to the direction of the taxi waiting for the next person to come out.
Jessica came down dressed in black too and then last person who came down made everyone’s eyes bulge out in shock.
Brittany held Alex’s hand and then turned front. Nicholas smirked from where he was standing..
Hailey looked like she was staring at a ghost. She couldn’t believe it, if this was a dream someone should wake her up..
“Let’s go..” Brittany said and the trio began advancing with Brittany’s gaze focused solely on one person…
