The next morning
VALERIE
I woke up a little bit late . I stood up from the bed which is very messy.
I stared at myself in the mirror too .
Dmn! My hair is tousled .
I breathed into my hand to smell my mouth.
“Ahhhhh”.
Yuck…! Blehhhhh…
My mouth stinks a lot . I need to brush . I ran into the bathroom to brush my teeth.
I wanted to reach for my brush but everything became so blurry and somehow far
I washed my eyes repeatedly it was the same .
Nanny came inside probably to see why I was up late.
“Valerie honey,good morning did you sleep well?”. Nanny said.
I looked back and she seems blurry.
“Are you okay? She said
“Nanny? It seems something is wrong with my eyes. I need a check up.
“How are you feeling? Do you think it’s because of the stress of your birthday?
“No! I think Jeffery did a charm so I can be like him. I’ll make sure I skin the life out of him”.
“Stop bluffing get dressed,I’ll drive you to the optician office”.
She said hiding her laugh so I won’t notice .
“Nanny, are you making jest of me now? I shouted as she ran out of the room .
I took a black skinny jeans and a blue shirt. I wore my sandals and hurried inside the car as we drove to the optician office.
I was told I have (hyperopia) long sightedness . I was given a glass to correct it.
“I can’t believe I’ll be wearing a glass for the rest of my life” . I sighed for the umpteenth time.
“Come on, Val, it’s just for a short while…the optician said it’s gonna correct it . It can’t be stuck to you forever. Besides,it makes you and Jeff a total match”. Nanny Jade laughed
“Nanny???
“What? I was just saying.
She widened her eyes.

The journey was smooth thanks to Jennifer who insist on driving us to where Dad is.
“Mom, seriously you shouldn’t allow her”. I said holding my belly .
My mouth flew in the air too.
“You actually agreed,so stop complaining”. She said too holding tight unto the chair
“Calm down guys, I have a driver’s license and I can drive anyhow…don’t worry I’ll have it in mind that you’re in the car and you’re my family members. I won’t drive like a mad woman that I am”.
She said giving us a dry smile.
I and mom looked at each other as we screamed.
“Arghhhhhhh”..
No one could help us.
I’ve been sweating profusely under the air conditioned car because of Jennifer.
Thank God she didn’t use her phone to record herself when she was driving.
She’s a social media freak remember?
She sucks a lot when it comes to driving,yet she wants to drive .
Finally,we got to our destination on a successful train. She parked like a mad woman as the tyres screeched aloud.
“We’re here sweeties”. She said alighting from the car.
I got down with Mom as I puked. I held my belly and puked until Mom came to my aid as she poured water on my head .
“This is all your fault dimwit”. I said talking to Jennifer
“Wait, my fault that we got here as fast as possible? She questioned laughing so hard.
She handed a face towel to me as I mopped my face with it.
We argued for a while before Mom cautioned us.
“Kids….that’s enough”. She breathed in and out .
“What? It’s not like this is an hospital or something…it’s a prison for crying out loud”. Jennifer mumbled.
“Jennifer? Mom yelled talking to her with her eyes.
“I was just saying…no offense Mom”. She surrendered raising her two hands up high.
“Let’s go,I can barely stand”. I said heading towards the door.

We were told to seat on a beach as a man went inside to bring Dad.
He came out with a bright smile. He has changed so much.
Dad wore an orange jumpsuit and a white vinyl sneakers .
“Hi honey”. Mom said with teary eyes.
“Sweetheart”. He hugged Mom with that bright smile of his . He kissed her hair , her forehead, her nose and finally her lips .
She responded with tears strolling down her cheeks.
“Dad? I and Jennifer said hugging him too.
“My beautiful twins, come over here. I miss hugging you guys,I miss carrying you both on my shoulders. I miss how you both will fight to sit on my lap and then Jenny will finally win”.
He kssed us both as we laughed.
“30 minutes please”. The warder ordered harshly.
What’s wrong with this stupid pot bellied man ? I muttered within my breath as I adjusted my glasses.
“Okay,thank you sir”. Mom said.

MARK
It’s finally great seeing my kids and my wife.
“You both have grown taller”. I said.
“Honey,how are you doing? How are you fairing with this place? How do you cope? Do they beat you? Have you even eaten? Here…I brought food for you…you haven’t even shaved. Oh my god”.
Tears streamed down her cheeks again .
“Mom? Relax…”. Jennifer squeezed her hand.
“Don’t question him too much,he’s fine’. Jeff added
“Darling,I’m doing well…can I eat the food now” . I said impatiently.
She brought out the food from the bag and dropped it on the table.
“Few minutes more”. A warder said.
I knew why he said that. He wants to eat out of the food my family brought for me. That’s how most of them does each time we have visitors.
“I brought a special delicacy for you too sir”. Tonia said.
Did she read my mind?
“Ohh, good… thanks a lot”. He collected it appreciatively and left us.
“When did you learn to do that? I asked.
Instead she told the kids to go and check everywhere. To distract them from listening to what we wanna say. I knew she meant business.
The kids stood up and left us.
“Can we leave that and talk about you? Mark? Seriously! What’s going on? She furrowed her eyebrows.
“Going on? What do you mean by that? I said pretending not to know what she’s talking about.
“I don’t get it! Why would you insist on accepting the crime you never committed”.
“You can’t understand”.
“Don’t tell me that sht! I’ve heard that and I’m tired of it. We said we’re gonna watch our kids grow together and here you are in the prison. She started with tears again.
“Calm down and stop sounding harsh, Tonia” .
“I’m sorry, I can’t help it !, seeing my husband in prison without knowing his crime breaks my heart a lot
“One more year to go and we’re done”. I said.
“Mark?
“Honey… you’ll understand this later,I promise you”. I touched her hair .
