PART 25

By Temi Akintade

It’s been a year since the pastor’s wife died and I was shocked by the time sister Dorcas announced to me one day in the shop that the pastor wanted to marry her.

“I don’t understand why?” I blurted before I could stop myself.

“What do you mean you don’t understand are you not happy for me?” She folded her arms. She was yelling at the top of her voice now.

Although we were in the kitchen section of the shop, I was certain that our voices were being heard.

“I don’t mean it! I was just surprised that is all.” I protested.

“So you think that because pastor buys biscuit for Hadassah and because you both talk for long after every service you think he would stoop so low and marry a teenager like you?” She released a short dry laugh.

“You who made a mistake at 16! You who is no longer a vrgn! You who doesn’t know God as much as I do!

You think God will allow you snatch my man from me you d’vil!!” She lashed with so much hatred. Her brows folded as she spoke.

My ears burned with shock. “How dare you judge me! You are not my God you self-righteous wtch! I am not a vrgn but I am still better than you!!”

“Look at this teenager! You are supposed to be calling me mummy not aunty. I don’t blame you. You already know what it means to have sx so why won’t you talk to me who is a vrgn. Look at me, Paulina.

I will deal with you in this Gwagwalada so much that, you will run away from me if you hear about me.” She picked her phone and sashayed out of the shop.

Hurriedly I picked my phone to call mama Judith but her phone was switched off. Then I put a call across Frank who picked on the second ring. I told him all that transpired between me and sister Dorcas.

“You should have just remained silent. Sometimes silence is the best answer for fools like her and watch God fight for you. Please be fervent in prayers may God uphold you. I will speak to you later.”

I was rounding up for the evening when Pastor called me and told me that he needed to speak with me and it was urgent.

After settling the other two workers, I picked my bag and boarded a bike to pick Hadassah from creche.

When I got to church for the evening service, sister Dorcas was the one who was leading the praise and worship section.

People were crying in worship as she sang like an angel while I sat in awe, surprised that a d’vil could sing like an angel.

After the evening service, Pastor Nathaniel the broad-chested pastor, and I had a long talk but I noticed he was fidgeting which was unusual. “What’s wrong sir?”

“I’m sorry but I need you to confirm something God told me.” He said.

For the first time since I set my eyes on him, I began to notice his handsome features. I have been too focused on learning about God from him that I totally ignored his features. “What is it, sir?”

Hadassah wiggled into his arms as though trying to confirm what he was about to say.

“God says you are my wife.” He said.

For some seconds, my heart stopped. I wanted to speak but my throat constricted. I shifted my wobbly gaze to the people who were still in the church but didn’t hear us.

Then my gaze met sister Dorcas’s. It was as if she already heard our discussion because she rose to her feet and sashayed out of the church the moment our eyes met. That was when I knew that I was in trouble.
