THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 61 – 70

EPISODE 65

“Kunle is going out on a date with Kathleen? Bastard! I knew something was up with him.” Ken said with a chuckle, making Ella raise a questioning brow.

“Just yesterday we were talking about her, and he kept acting like he wasn’t in the least bit interested in her.” Ken said with a big smile.

“Why do you seem so happy about him going out with her?” Ella asked curiously.

“Because I think they will make a really good pair. Who told you about it, anyway? Don’t tell me he could tell you about something like that but couldn’t tell me his best friend?” Ken said making Ella laugh.

“I can’t believe you’re jealous. Anyway Kathleen told me, not Kunle, so you can’t tell Kunle you know about it.” Ella said as she stood up to stretch her body.

“Sure. I’m not here to talk about them anyway.” Ken said dismissively.

“So why are you here?”

“I just dropped by to see how you’re doing and to be sure your best friend hasn’t poisoned your mind against me.” Ken said making Ella raise a brow.

“What if she had?”

“I would have convinced you otherwise.” Ken assured her as he walked over to where she was and embraced her.

“And how would you have done that?” Ella asked with a giggle making Ken pull back to kss her forehead, and then her cheeks, and then her chin.

“You should return to your office. I’m sure you have a lot you need to do since you missed work for two days.” Ella said as she tried to pull away before he could kss her, but he held her firmly around her shoulder to keep her from moving away.

“You’re really not going to change your mind, right?” Ken asked as he pulled away to look into her face.

Ella noticed the worried frown on his face, and reached out to pat his brow which was furrowed, “As long as you don’t give me a reason to, I intend to remain right by your side.” She assured him.

“Okay then. So how about we hang out after work?” He asked hopefully.

“That won’t work. I have to visit Kathleen. I need to hear the gist of what’s going on between herself and my brother.” Ella said with a big smile.

“You seem to like her a lot.” Ken observed.

“What’s there not to like? She’s a nice lady.” Ella said with a shrug.

“So you would rather spend the evening gossiping with her, than be with your man?” Ken asked in displeasure.

“Exactly! I’m so glad you understand.” Ella said with a sweet smile.

“That’s so not fair.” Ken complained.

“Well, I still need to see Kathleen’s mom anyway. Have you met her? She’s a really sweet drama queen, and I wouldn’t put it past her to have match made Kunle with Kathleen.” Ella said as she placed her hands over Ken’s shoulder, and intertwined it so they were looking directly at each other’s face.

“Really? I should meet her then. What do you think? Should we go over there together? Do you want us to let them know we are going out now?” Ken asked Ella.

“No. Let’s still keep it a secret for the time being.” Ella said making Ken frown.

“But you already told your best friend.” He said accusingly.

“My best friend isn’t your sister. Kunle is my brother.” She reminded him.

“Doesn’t mean I can’t tell him, after all he gave me the go ahead to date you. It’s not like he’s going to be mad.” Ken pointed out making Ella detach her arm from his shoulder.

“If you already made up your mind that you wanted to tell him, why then did you ask for my opinion?” Ella asked making Ken sigh.

“Fine. Let’s not tell him about it yet. I should return to my office. See you later in the evening then.” Ken said, dropping a kss on her cheek before walking away.

**************

Pete had a grin on his face as he worked. He couldn’t wait for closing hours when he would have to see Kathleen again and banter with her as usual. It was refreshing to see that she was not only pretty and decent, but also intelligent and witty.

He raised his head when his phone beeped with a reminder notification, and he picked up his phone to see what it was. He scowled when he realized it was a week long business conference he was supposed to attend the next week. He had little or no idea what the conference was about, but only knew his father attended it every year, and he had to attend it now as the CEO of the company.

That meant he had to travel on Monday, and would likely return on Saturday, so his plan to take Kathleen to a club wouldn’t work the coming Friday. He thought about Amanda, and was slightly relieved that she would have both Kathleen, her mother and sister, as well as Chidi to look after her in his absence, since she definitely couldn’t skip school to travel with him.

He returned his attention to the work in front of him, and was forced to raise his head five minutes later when his office door was suddenly pushed open and his mother walked in.

“Mom?” He stood up, clearly startled to her.

“Why do you sound like you’re seeing a ghost?” She asked as she dropped her handbag on the desk and sat down on the seat opposite his.

“Ekason ma (Good afternoon mum).” He greeted, prostrating respectfully.

“How is my granddaughter?” She asked without responding to his greeting.

“She is okay. What brings you to the office?” He asked in confusion.

“What do you mean by that? Isn’t this my husband’s company again? Or because you are now running things here I can’t come around to see how things are going anymore?” She asked with a slightly raised brow as she looked around the office as though she was searching for something.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to insinuate that.” Pete said apologetically. His mother was a very strict and quick tempered lady, and himself and his siblings had grown up really terrified of her.

“I learnt you’re sleeping with one of the employees?” She asked without bothering to beat around the bush.

Pete tried not to let his expression give him away as he looked at his mother. Which of the employees could possibly have reported to his mother? Perhaps it was the secretary? Of course he knew the employees weren’t loyal to him since he wasn’t technically their boss, and had just come in to take over from his father. So it was likely that their loyalty was mostly to his parents, but that didn’t give anyone the right to report his private business to his mother.

THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 61 – 70

“Why are you not saying anything?” His mother asked, drawing his attention back to her. She was not only the wife of Chief Howells, but she was also a powerful woman and a big time politician, the sort politicians would go to when contesting for an election to help them organize the women and youths.

“Because I really don’t think there is any need to say anything.” Pete said without bothering to deny or accept the allegation.

“How can you say that?” She asked in a harsh tone.

“If the staff here are going to be reporting all my activities to you, then I can as well quit the job and return to minding my personal business.” Pete said in an equally harsh tone making his mother narrow her eyes at him.

“I think being away from the country has made you forgotten the kind of mother you have.” She said, looking at him closely.

“I haven’t forgotten the kind of mother I have, but maybe you have forgotten that I’m no longer your little boy of yesterday. I’m a full grown man now, and I even have a child of my own. And as such I can no longer answer to you as I used to.” Pete pointed out making her give him a crooked smile.

“So after getting into a scandal with Senator Abamba’s daughter just a little while ago, you have also decided to turn your father’s company into a brothel where you pick up any staff you dim fit to warm your bed?” She asked making him scowl at her.

“Like I said, it’s not something that should be of concern to you. And although I don’t know your source, but you should ask whoever feeds you with these information to do a better job out of it. Now I’m sure you didn’t come all the way to the company just to find out who I’m sleeping with, so what is this visit about?” Pete asked, making it clear to her that he was done discussing that topic.

She looked at him for sometime without saying anything, and then took in a deep breath as though making up her mind to let it go, “For your sake, I really hope you know what you’re doing.”

“Sure.”

“Well, I asked you to come over to the house last weekend that I wanted to see you, but you didn’t come.” She reminded him.

“Oh! I’m sorry, it escaped my mind. You could have just called to remind me instead of coming all the way to the office.” Pete said apologetically.

“It doesn’t matter. I needed to leave the house anyway, and see what you’re doing with the company.” She said dismissively.

“Do you remember Mrs Wole? They used to live in the same estate with us when you were younger? Her husband used to drive a lemon colored Mercedes Benz 230?” she continued when he narrowed his eyes and tried to remember the person in question.

“Yes. Yes! I remember now.” Pete said when he got the picture of the family in question.

“Good. So I met her the other day. Apparently her husband wants to run for the gubernatorial election, and so she came to meet me…” She started making Pete wonder what any of that had to do with him.

“Okay?”

“So I found out their daughter, that your sister’s namesake, Tolu, she isn’t married yet. Do you remember how you used to like her when you were young? You always used to hang around…”

Pete had a frown on his face now, and he really hoped it wasn’t what he was thinking, “Why are you bringing that up now?” He asked, interrupting her before she could go further.

“Well, I sort of figured since you are single, and you seem to be hooking up with different ladies, maybe you are ready to settle down, so I took the liberty of taking her phone number…”

“I never asked you to do that. IF and WHEN I decide I need to settle down, I know where and how to find a wife for myself!” Pete growled at her angrily.

“Are you yelling at me?” She asked in disbelief.

“I’m sorry if my voice is sounding like I’m yelling, but I really do not appreciate you getting involved in my business this way. I am thirty-three years old. If you feel there is a need to matchmake anyone, you can ask either Jide or Tolu, or even Kemi if they need help, but definitely not me!” Pete said making her raise her hand in surrender.

“Okay! Fine! Jor ma binu (Please I’m sorry). But the thing is I already promised to hook you up with her, so can you at least meet her once?”

“NO! I don’t mean any disrespect, but please go back and tell them I said I am unhookable. I’m not interested.” Pete said making her frown.

“Why? She is a medical doctor.” His mother asked stubbornly.

“You’re unbelievable. In this modern day, you really think you can just make such decisions on my behalf and expect me to go along with it? I can’t believe you! It is bad enough that you and dad have me here running the family business against my will, but I won’t allow you run my personal life, so stay out of it!” Pete told her bitterly

“Alright. I’ve heard you. I guess I will just have to find my way around that.” She said sadly, trying to blackmail him emotionally.

“Please do.” Pete said unflinchingly as he watched her get up, “And tell whoever is feeding you with those information about me that the moment I find him or her, they should kiss their job goodbye!” He threatened.

“You will do no such thing!”

“Why not wait until I find the person?” He asked angrily before returning his attention to the laptop, making it clear to his mother that he was done with the conversation.

“So how did you both meet?” Wumi asked Kimberly after they both settled in their seat at the five star restaurant Eric had taken them to, while he went to place their orders.

“Well, he was driving a friend’s cab, and I thought he was a cab driver so I flagged him down, and then asked him to marry me some minutes later.” Kimberly said with a grin making Wumi laugh out loud. And then she paused and looked at Kimberly again when she realized Kimberly was serious.

“Just like that?”

“Yeah. He is like my complete spec.” Kimberly said in a quiet voice so Eric wouldn’t overhear her.

“Awww! That is so sweet.” Wumi said as she looked in Eric’s direction.

“Yeah. He is sweet, isn’t he?” Kimberly asked with a small smile as she looked in Eric’s direction. He was still wearing his Jean three quarter short and a gray tank top which revealed his muscular arms and hairy legs. He was also wearing a baseball cap now. Kimberly smiled to herself when she noticed some ladies staring at him with open admiration. She would stare too if he wasn’t hers already. Now she suddenly wished he had a wedding ring on his finger to show them he was taken.

‘Watch it Kim! It’s just a temporary arrangement!’ A voice in her head cautioned her, making her snap out of her thoughts as she looked back at Wumi.

“So you live here in Lagos?” Kimberly asked, changing the subject.

“Sometimes. Since my family is in Abuja, I spend more time there when I’m in the country. But I basically love to travel.” Wumi said with a shrug, and then smiled when Eric approached them with a waiter following behind him carrying a food trolley.

“I hope I didn’t waste too much time?” He asked them both as he sat down, while the waiter set the food on the table.

“Not at all.” Wumi assured him.

“So what were you ladies talking about? I noticed you looking my way with so much admiration.” Eric asked after the waiter excused himself after serving their meal.

She hadn’t realized he had been looking at her when she looked at him earlier, “Just the usual girls talk.” Kimberly said, making Wumi realize she wasn’t ready to let Eric know how she was feeling yet. Interesting.

“So how long have you both known each other?” Wumi asked, looking from Eric to Kimberly as they started eating.

“We met just a couple of days ago.” Kimberly said as she ate, while Eric focused his attention on the food.

“And you got married just like that? Wow!” Wumi murmured as she ate.

“Well, I personally don’t think it should take months or years to recognize someone you would want to share your life with.” Eric said with his eyes on Kimberly.

“I told you he’s sweet, didn’t I?” Kimberly asked Wumi with a grin.

“Indeed he is. I wish my boyfriend could learn to be like him.” Wumi said with a sigh making Eric raise a brow.

“Your boyfriend?” Eric asked, unable to stop himself.

“Yeah. I met him during my last trip to Dubai. He’s a nice guy, but he’s an introvert. Something tells me he’s going to ask me to marry him soon.” Wumi said thoughtfully.

“Has your brother seen him? Does he approve?” Eric asked, trying not to glare at Wumi who had a grin on her face.

“Why does he need to approve of who she is settling down with? It’s a modern world, and anyone can do anything. I’ll tell you what, if your family doesn’t approve, elope with your heartthrob.” Kimberly said with a conspiratorial wink which made Eric glare at her.

“You shouldn’t give her such advice. And her brother has every right to approve of who he settles down with. He’s a man, so he can easily tell if her man is for real or not.” Eric half growled at Kimberly making her draw back.

“Why are you taking it so personal? So are you saying she has to approve of whosoever her brother wants to settle down with too?” She asked looking at Wumi who was grinning.

“What do you think Eric? Do I have to approve of who my brother settles down with?” She asked trying not to laugh at Eric’s reaction.

“I’m sure he will put your feelings into consideration when picking his wife.” Eric said with a shrug.

“I suppose that is fair. I’ll put his feelings into consideration too. You sound just like my brother. I guess hanging out with him must have rubbed off on you.” Wumi said with a giggle while Kimberly watched the exchange between them.

“Or maybe I must have rubbed off on him, who knows?” Eric asked with a smirk.

THE MIRACLE I NEED : Episode 61 – 70

“By the way, I learnt your brother isn’t in the country at the moment?” Kimberly asked, trying not to sound like she was prying.

“Yeah. He’s away studying.” Wumi said as she scooped a forkful of rice into her mouth.

“Studying? What’s he studying?”

“People. He loves researching. So he’s doing some sort of social research about people. He left just some weeks ago, and it might take him about a year to be done. Or less, who knows?”

“Really? He left the company business for something like that? How come your parents permitted him?” Kimberly asked in puzzlement.

“Well, my dad is involved in it too. So it’s like their thing. Plus I don’t think he needs their permission anyway. Our parents let’s us do whatever we want.” Wumi said with a shrug.

“That’s interesting. I’d like to meet him when he returns.” Kimberly said in an easy tone making Wumi glance at Eric to see his reaction.

“I’m sure he would really like you when he meets you.”

“You think so?” Kimberly asked with a grin before turning to look at Eric, “Eric seems to be of the opinion that I’m not your brother’s type, and he won’t be interested in me.”

“He said so?” Wumi asked with a giggle.

“Yes I said so.” Eric responded, giving Wumi a pointed look.

“Hmmm. Why would you be worried about whether or not my brother likes you though, when you’re already married to this sweet man?” Wumi asked curiously.

“I guess it’s because I’m not as wealthy as your brother is. I think she’s a golddigger.” Eric said with a shake of his head.

“A wealthy golddigger who got married a broke unemployed guy.” Kimberly responded with an eye roll making Wumi giggle.
