THE MIRACLE I NEED SEASON 2 : Episode 21 – 30

EPISODE 27

“I’ve never been to a more touching wedding,” Kathleen said, later that evening as she lay on Pete’s bed with him, watching a movie. Ella and Ken had just left since they had all come back to the house together.

In the months following their engagement she had gradually come to relax around him, and she didn’t worry so much anymore about being alone with him indoors. So while the others were in the living room watching TV, they both often stayed back in his bedroom to have some time to themselves, while also going over the details of their marriage.

“I know, right? I guess God used this to teach us that he doesn’t judge people by human standards. If he did, many of us wouldn’t experience the magnitude of blessings we enjoy,” Pete said thoughtfully.

“I agree with you. That reminds me, I forgot to ask you. How are the preparations going for the restaurant? It’s been a while since you mentioned it,” Kathleen said, changing the subject.

“Yeah, that is because we’ve all been busy, especially Eric. Hopefully we will start working on the place after our marriage. Although Eric promised to get the whole location thing sorted once he gets back from their honeymoon. So let’s see how it goes,” Pete said, and Kathleen nodded.

“I hope you haven’t mentioned it to Sharon? You know I don’t want to tell Chidi about it yet. I want it to be a surprise to him.”

“Yeah, I know. I haven’t said anything to her,” Kathleen assured him.

“Good. So let’s talk about…” He stopped mid-sentence when his phone started ringing and he picked it up when he saw it was Ella who was calling.

“Hey! I was going to call you. Have you both… What? How? Where?” Pete asked in alarm and was already getting off the bed as he spoke, making Kathleen stand up too.

“Just calm down, I will be right there,” Pete said and hung up as he looked around his room disoriented as though he was looking for something.

“Is there a problem? What is wrong?” Kathleen asked, looking at him with a mixture of worry and confusion.

“She said they were attacked by some robbers on their way home and Ken was shot while they took the car. I need to get to the hospital,” Pete said as he quickly picked up a polo t-shirt and wore it over his singlet as he hurried out of the bedroom.

“Oh no! I will come with you,” Kathleen offered following him closely.

Pete looked at her as though he was going to object and then nodded his head as he walked into the living room.

“How far? You’re going out?” Chidi asked, sitting up immediately he noticed the tension between Pete and Kathleen as they walked into the living room.

“Yes, please take care of the house. We will be back soon,” he said, looking at Amanda who was watching him closely, “I might not be back on time to tuck you in, so aunt Isioma will spend the night with you, okay?” He said as he bent down beside her and pecked her forehead, and Amanda nodded as she went to hug Kathleen.

“Isioma please make sure she is well covered,” Pete instructed, and Isioma nodded.

Chidi stood up and walked out with them, “What is wrong? Did something happen?” He asked, knowing that Pete likely did not mention what the problem was because of Amanda.

“Femi was shot on his way to drop off Ella at home,”

“Fk!” Chidi swore, “What happened? How is he? Is it very bad? What about Ella? Was she hurt too?” He asked with concern.

“I will let you know what’s up after I see them. We have to leave now,” Pete said as he got into the car and Kathleen followed suit.

Once they arrived at the hospital Ella was sitting by the reception with her face buried in both hands while she sobbed. She was still dressed in the asoebi gown but her gele and shoes were missing.

“Ella!” Kathleen called to get her attention, and Ella raised her head to look at them. Kathleen noticed that her gown was stained with bIood, and there was dried bIood on her arm and face as she stood up and walked straight to where Kathleen was standing and embraced her.

“What am I going to do if anything happens to him?” Ella asked as she wept.

“Calm down, he will be okay. Where is he? What did the doctor say?” Pete asked, looking around for someone he could speak to.

“They rushed him to the theatre. They’re still operating on him,” Ella said with a sniffle, while Kathleen patted her back gently.

“What happened? Why did they shoot him? What did they want?” Pete asked with a frown.

“We should probably sit down,” Kathleen suggested since they were standing at the center of the reception area. Without waiting for either of them to respond she led Ella back to her seat, and sat down by the right, while Pete sat by Ella’s left side.

“He was going to drop me off at my place, but then we decided to stop by the roadside to use the ATM, since he didn’t have any cash on him. I couldn’t go with him since my feet were hurting because of the heels I wore all day, so he was to just go and withdraw the cash while I wait in the car. I didn’t realize that I forgot to auto-lock the doors after he left,” Ella paused to blow her nose into a handkerchief.

“So what happened?” Pete asked, urging her on.

“Immediately he left I got busy with my phone posting pictures on my WhatsApp status, and the next thing I know a guy knocked on my window and showed me his gun. While I was still contemplating on what to do next, the driver’s door opened and another guy got into the car and showed me his gun too. The guy by my side of the car opened the door, and while he was dragging me out, Ken came out and tried to stop him. The guy shot him and got into the car before anyone knew what was happening, and they drove away,” Ella finished with a sob.

“Where did they shoot him? His hand or where?” Pete asked calmly, but there was a pensive expression on his face even though his voice was calm.

“I don’t know. There was bIood everywhere. His shirt was soaked,” Ella cried.

“Was he conscious or unconscious?”

“He was conscious at first, but on our way to the hospital he became unconscious,” Ella explained with a sniffle.

“Stop crying. Let’s just wait for the doctor to tell us how he is,” Pete said with a sigh.

Ella kept sobbing as she repeatedly prayed to God to keep him alive and safe. She didn’t want to even begin to imagine her life without him in it.

“Don’t worry, he will be okay. Let’s just pray for him,” Kathleen suggested, and all three of them held hands to pray.

Ken opened his eyes to see Ella seated beside him on the bed, holding his hand and looking at him as if she was scared he would disappear if she looked away from him, “Have you been crying?” He asked softly, looking at her swollen eyes.

“I thought you wouldn’t wake up,” Pete said with a sigh, making Ken turn his head in Pete’s direction.

“What time is it?” Ken asked with a frown when he saw Kathleen. He wondered why they were all there.

“It’s almost two in the morning. How are you feeling?” Ella who had been quiet asked with concern.

“I’m okay. You didn’t have to worry so much,” Ken said squeezing her hand reassuringly, “Kat please take her out, she needs to clean her face,” Ken pleaded, and Kathleen nodded, and Ella reluctantly followed her out.

Once the ladies were gone, Ken tried to sit up on the bed as Pete moved closer to the bed, “How are you really feeling?”

“It hurts like hell. The pain actually woke me up. You’ve spoken with the doctor, right? How bad is it?” Ken asked with a worried frown.

“Thankfully it missed your heart, but it was very close to it. The doctor said you’ll be okay within a few weeks as long as you don’t stress yourself and allow the wound to heal,” Pete assured him.

“Thank God. For a moment there I thought I was going to die,” Ken confessed with a sigh.

“For a moment there I thought I was going to have to go through the stress of finding another best man and senseless friend,” Pete said as he sat down where Ella had just stood from.

“Did she cry a lot?” Ken asked, referring to Ella.

“Yeah, she did.”

“Do you think this would make her reconsider her decision to marry me?” Ken asked, making Pete look at him incredulously.

“You barely just survived death, and this is the first thing on your mind? You’re not even asking if the thieves were caught?”

“Even if they haven’t been caught yet, they will be caught. I installed an anti-theft tracker, so it’ll be easy to get them. Marrying your sister is more important to me right now,” Ken said and lay down once again.

“Then maybe you should stop trying to be so strong in front of her. Allow her to take care of you. Who knows? Maybe before you recover fully she would be more open to the whole marriage idea,” Pete suggested.

Ken’s lips curved in a smile, “I think you’re right. Thank you, brother-in-law,” Ken said making Pete laugh. He was more than relieved that his best friend was alright.

The door opened and both ladies returned with Ella looking more presentable after washing her face and hands, “You must be hungry,” Ella said as she returned to his bedside.

“I’m just tired. I need to sleep,” Ken said with a yawn as he shut his eyes.

“You both can go home, I will spend the night with him,” Ella suggested, and Pete raised a brow.

“As what? He is my best friend, and you’re just my sister to him. I don’t see any reason why you should be with him while I go home. Go home, I will take care of him,” Pete said, fooling around with Ella while Ken tried not to laugh since he was trying to fall asleep.

“Uhm… You both left Amanda at home so you have to go back. Besides, I was with him when he was shot, so it only makes sense that I look after him. Don’t worry, you can go,” Ella said, bent on acting like she wasn’t in a relationship with Ken.

“How nice of you. I’m not leaving you here alone with him,” Pete insisted stubbornly, while Kathleen watched them both in amusement.

“Only if Femi was married, we wouldn’t have to argue over something like this. Maybe I should set him up with one of the ladies at the company. I wonder if he fancies any,” Pete said thoughtfully making Ella scowl.

“As what? Did he tell you he was in need of a woman in his life?” She asked irritably.

“He doesn’t have to. That is what best friends do for each other. Don’t worry about it though, I will get him a girlfriend soon so you won’t always have to look after him like this,” Pete promised making Ella grit her teeth.

“I don’t remember complaining.”

“You don’t have to complain before I do the needful. I’m your big brother after all,” Pete said with a grin, and Kathleen stifled her laughter. She was already aware as was every other person that Ella and Ken were in a relationship. The only person thinking the relationship was still a secret was Ella.

“Whatever. You can go or stay if you want, I’m not going anywhere. He is my friend too,” Ella insisted stubbornly as she remained by Ken’s bedside.

Seeing that Ken was going to be okay, and Ella was there, Pete decided it was best to return home, “Since you insist, we will be on our way home. We will bring him food in the morning while you go home and freshen up,” Pete said, and Ella nodded in acknowledgment.

Kathleen walked over to the bedside and embraced Ella, “Don’t worry, he’s going to be alright,” she assured her before walking away with Pete.

Once Ken heard the door close, he opened his eyes, “You still don’t want to tell them about us?” Ken asked with a slight frown.

“I didn’t think this was the ideal time to raise the subject. We can officially tell them once you are out of the hospital,” Ella said, touching his face softly, “How are you feeling?”

“My whole body aches. But I really want to sleep, so why not join me? I’ll sleep better holding you,” Ken said, and Ella looked at him hesitantly.

“It’s not like I can do anything to you in this state, can I?” He asked with a rueful smile.

“That’s not what I’m worried about. You could get hurt,” Ella said with concern and then looked down at her clothes, “Besides, I don’t think you’re going to feel comfortable with me wearing this,” Ella said, doubting how she was going to sleep herself in those.

“Why not get in here first, and then we will know if we will be okay or not?” Ken asked, adjusting on the bed so she could climb beside him on the right side.

Ella joined him on the bed, and they both adjusted until they found a comfortable position, “Are you sure you’re okay like this?” Ella asked again, feeling worried.

“I’m fine as long as you are here. I was more scared that I might die without getting married to you,” Ken confessed, making her raise her head from his chest to look into his face.

“I was scared too. You can’t die before me, okay?” Ella pleaded.

“That’s a selfish thing to ask for. I’d rather die before you. My life would be meaningless without you,” Ken said with a shake of his head.

“Then let’s just die together when we are old instead. Let’s live till hundred, and then when we are old we can just go to bed together and not wake up,” Ella suggested, making Ken chuckle.

“I’m older than you so I’m going to get to a hundred years before you. We both know we can’t choose how we come into this world or how we leave the world,” Ken said wistfully.

Ella giggled, “We can actually choose how we leave if we choose to commit sui¢ide.”

“Who knows if death comes before you even think of sui¢ide?” Ken countered, making her sigh, “I know of a person that was knocked down by a car on his way to buy sniper to commit sui¢ide,” Ken said making her laugh out loud.

“That is a lie jor!”

“I’m serious. He kept crying that he didn’t want to die again, that the doctors should save him,” Ken said with a chuckle.

Ella sighed, “Life is just so complicated. I’m grateful that we get to decide what we do with our lives in between though. Let’s spend the rest of our lives together,” Ella suggested.

“Does that mean you will marry me?” Ken asked excitedly.

“I never said I wasn’t going to marry you. It’s just not yet,” Ella explained, “Life is too short to delay certain things. We still have to finish at least twenty books, and I still have to work on myself as I’ve been doing for the past couple of months, but we can revisit the issue after you’re fully recovered,” Ella said and Ken grinned.

“If I had known getting shot will get you to reconsider this, I would have gotten shot three months ago,” Ken joked making Ella glare at him.

“You shouldn’t joke about something like that!” Ella chided him.

“I’m going to recover really quickly, don’t worry!” Ken promised with a confident smile.
