??? MATILDA’S POV???
I woke up and found myself in a place that looks like an hospital and the memories of what happened previously came back to me as I found myself trying to recollect what actually happened. I jolted up immediately I remembered Anita.
Ani! I shouted as I scanned the whole room but she isn’t here with me. Oh! You’re awake was the next thing I heard a nurse say as she came into the room smiling.
Where is my friend please? I asked. Relax dear she’s in a different room, her condition was worse when she was brought in, so we had to put her in a separate room for special treatment.
Oh! How is she now? I asked again. “she’s fine now, she isn’t awake but she’s responding to treatment already and you should be grateful that she made it back alive” she replied and I sighed.
Could you take me to her ward please? I need to see how she’s fairing. I requested, just then some cops walked in. I was just about telling you, they’ve been waiting for you to wake up… the nurse said
And why is that? I asked.
“Young lady, we would like to hear the story of what actually happened on the night you were shot” one among them said. And it was then I remembered shooting the guys. OMG! I can’t believe I actually killed someone, as in I held a gun in my life and shot some bullets at a living soul I murmured sadly.
Did you actually shoot the three men? How were you able to do that when you were supposed to be overpowered by them? Another man asked and I rolled my eye.
Are they really dead? I asked. Thankfully you all survived the bullets shot. One among the men replied.
Oh! I’m glad I didn’t kill them but they deserve to be killed. I said
“Well! That’s why you need to be arrested for attempted murder” one replied again and I let out a weak but hysterical laughter. Did I just hear you say you’ll arrest me, like are you freaking kidding me or what? I asked to be sure of what I heard and they chorused YES.
Why don’t you just check the surveillance cameras to check what actually happened instead of coming her to blurt out nonsense. We are fking beggars, we live on the streets and were sleeping at the front of one of the shops when we heard those thieves trying to break into some shops! Where were y’all when they tried to rob the shop?
Where were y’all annoying cops when those thugs were trying to a$$ault and kill us? Isn’t it your job to always be at alert and ensure there is security everywhere to ensure the safety of every citizen? Why don’t you do your goddmn jobs instead of coming her to embarrass the innocent! I yelled in tears and heard the nurse sniff back her tears. In guess she’s moved my what I said.
“It’s okay darling, I’m sorry you had to be wrongly accused” she apologized and patted my back while she hugged me.
We’ll leave now! Please do ensure she’s well taken care of… the cops said as they stood up to leave. We’ll come back later they added and that got me furious as I threw a pillow at one of them. “return to this place and I’ll make sure I slit your throats then I’ll have a good reason to be arrested for ” I yelled again and I felt something pierce through my skin.
I looked and saw the nurse injecting me with one thing I guess was a sedative as I found myself asleep almost immediately “you shouldn’t be stressing yourself yet was the last thing I heard before falling into deep slumber.
I woke up with the feeling of someone playing with my eye lashes and opened my eyes only to see Anita’s beautiful face smiling at me. OMG! You’re awake, I screamed in excitement as I sat up immediately to hug her. “I’m sorry you had to go through this” we both said and paused to laugh at each other.
I should thank you for being awake for us to quickly notice they’re movement… I said and she smiled. ‘and I should thank you for being able to fight for both of us’ she replied and we hugged each other once again.
I can see you girls are happy to be back together once again. A nurse who is different from the one that attended to me when I woke up the last time said as she came in. sorry where is the other nurse? I asked
“She’s not on duty again, I’m the one in charge of your treatment now” she replied and I muttered and oh!
“You girls will be discharged tomorrow” she added and Anita sighed as her leer changed to a sad one immediately she heard that. Is that you thinking about the fact that we’ll be back to the street? I asked and she nodded. ‘ Don’t be depressed okay? I know our lives will change for better one day… I assured her.
‘Oh! That reminds me’ the nurse said making us turn to look at her. “ here you go” she said as she handed us an envelope each, we opened it and gasped as we saw some wads of cash in it. We gave her a questioning look. ‘that’s from the cops that came earlier, it’s been given to you as a compensation for the brave steps you took’ she said understanding what we were trying to imply by the look we gave her.
‘‘Wow! This is amazing we gotta use this to get ourselves a roof on our head’’ we both said and laughed again. I love the fact that we think in the same way. Alright! Thanks for delivering this to us… we both said and she nodded. How about the guys? I asked. ‘I was about asking the same question too’ Anita said of course i trust you for that… I replied
“They were arrested as soon as they were discharged” she replied…. ‘I hope they rot in jail’ Anita said and I nodded in support of what she said. But how did they survive it, j thought I shot them in their chests? I asked.
You might be hallucinating, you didn’t shoot them in their chest but shoulders. You seeing the bullet penetrate their chest might be because you were so weak… She replied
Luckily, you all survived because you were brought in here almost on time… She added and we both sighed
*MONTHS LATER*
Make sure you call to check on me, and make sure you don’t cause any trouble, okay? Anita said to me as we finished setting up the phone we just bought. Alright I will, and make sure you call to check on me too and don’t cause trouble either… I replied and we did and high five before departing to our various place of hustling. Yeah! We don’t go to the same area to beg because it won’t be okay if we do.
I was lost in thought as I haven’t made any dime since I’ve been outside hustling as I kept walking with my hands folded beneath my boobs with my head facing down, one would easily know I’m not in a good mood, but who would care about a useless beggar like me? I thought. Hey watch out! Was the only thing I heard, but before I knew it I’ve been hit by a young guy riding bicycle and I fell. Damn! I cursed and stood up quickly as I didn’t want my dress to tear because I just bought it. I was dusting my dress when I felt someone grab me from the back making me turn only to be welcomed by a resounding slap.
‘Ouch! That hurts, who does this guy hand have to be this thick and hard on my skin’ I thought and rubbed my already hot and red cheek. How dare you act so recklessly to the extent of making me fall off my bicycle! He yelled and I scoffed.
Anita I know I promised not to cause any trouble, but I’m sorry I’ll have to break that promise because this fool right here asked for it… I said to myself and gave him a punch on the nose. I’ve been on the street for years and my skin has become really hard due to much suffering.
Trust me when I say you can’t remain balanced when I give you a blow. I grabbed him by the collar and kicked him hard on his tummy. He tried to fight back, but he’s no match my power.
People were already gathering as some tried to separate us. I was quick to have given him the beating of his life before they got to us.
The first person that tried to touch me was a bald man and I beat him on his shiny head and brought his head close to the boy’s and hit it on his.
“Someone should call the cops” I heard a lady shout amidst the crowd. Dmn! I cursed as I quickly thought of a way to get myself out of the crowd.
Wow perfect! I said to myself and smiled inwardly as an idea pooped in my head. I tore off my dress as I quickly put on a show while I acted like a deranged person. Fools! I cursed under breath as I heard loud gasps from the people.
After being a bit distanced from the crowd, I found myself running while some chase after me. Are these people jobless? I asked myself as I kept running as fast as my legs could carry me.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN! I shouted at them. Huh! I gasped as I saw that they’ve almost caught up with me. I doubled my pace and jumped into a car whose trunk was about closing up.
“I’m sorry in advance” I said to the owner of the car who I’m sure isn’t aware of what’s happening.
I winked at the fools that were chasing me and blew them a kiss as the trunk finally closed up and the car zoomed off. “It’s so hot in here” I said and fanned myself as I adjusted a bit in the uncomfortable situation I found myself in.
Wait! Where do I know he’s going to, what if he’s a kidnapper? I thought.
“I’m doomed” I said aloud
