Two civil rights organisations, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre and Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room have expressed fears over the future of girl child education because of continued attacks and abduction of school girls in Northern Nigeria.
They warned that such attacks were a serious threat to the agitation against out-of-school children adding that gender-based violence would have a huge impact on education in Nigeria.
The head of programs in WARDC, Evelyn Ugbe, spoke on Thursday at a two-day training on gender-responsive budgeting and advocacy which was organised with support from United Nations and European Union Spotlight Initiative.
The NSCSR expressed its views in a statement by its convener, Ene Obi and two co-conveners, Asma’Joda and James Ugochukwu, which was issued after a strategy meeting in Abuja to review its threshold document for the 2023 general elections.
The statement read, “Situation Room calls on the Federal Government to address the interruption to education occasioned by the closure of schools by governors in reaction to attacks on schools and abduction of students, as opposed to tackling the incidents decisively.”
