WHITE! THE COLOR OF YOUR HEART: Chapter 1-10

WHITE!!!; The color of your heart???????????????

(A wall flower’s guide to finding God)

Chapter 10
(The boys, the girl and the missing ID Card)

I huffed as I speed walked all the way to my favorite reading lecture hall. It had been two days since the whole incident with Tobi and Sean, and Sean had just randomly texted me to meet him there for us to begin planning our contribution for the upcoming debate.

It didn’t help that I was all the way on the other side of the campus.

I didn’t have any change on me, and no way was I going to run in front of so many people, so I had opted for my most reliable method, speed walking, grumbling all the way about what made Sean think he could boss me around the way he did.

Weren’t we both supposed to work around our schedules?

I finally arrived and ran up the steps, bursting in and finding him sitting a few chairs away from my favorite seating spot. I was a little surprised that he hadn’t sat there.

I stalked up to him.

“Are you possessed? Couldn’t you have informed me before hand that we would be meeting today?” I asked breathlessly.

He looked up at me with uninterested eyes.

“Did you run here?”

I grit my teeth.

“No,but I’m sure I lost fifty pounds with how fast I came here.”

“I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t do much to you.” He teased and I punched him in the arm.

I tried fanning myself with the collar of my shirt.

“God. See the way I’m sweating like someone that they are about to kill.”

Sean chuckled silently, but not silent enough for me not to hear, then brought a journal out of his bag.

“So, I came up with ideas and small companies we can enlist for the decorations. Thankfully we have funding already from the faculty, but we still shouldn’t be so extravagant. It should be something simple and easy to put up.” He began, opening the journal.

I placed my hand on his, slamming the journal shut.

“Wait, weren’t we supposed to do this together?”

“We are. I’m asking for your opinion.”

“But you’ve already come up with all the ideas nah!” I said in frustration, then folded my arms, pausing for awhile.

“Look Sean….. I’m…. sorry about that Sunday. I’m sorry for snapping at you. I know you were only waiting because I told you to, but I was so embarrassed that i wasn’t thinking straight. I snapped at Feyikemi too, so it wasn’t only you.” I said quietly, hands on my knees.

He was silent for awhile.

“Since when do you feel embarrassed around me? I’m not Tobi am I?” He asked casually.

“How did Tobi enter the conversation now?”

“And are you apologizing because you feel sorry, or because you just want me to stop being angry?”

“Isn’t that the same thing?”

“Do you seriously think that I’m the kind of person to hold a grudge because of something as trivial as that?”

“Ha!” I snorted. “With the stunt you pulled two days ago? You are the oga of holding grudges. You keep malice like a child. Don’t even try to hide it.” I said, throwing my head back and laughing contentedly, but within me I was happy that he hadn’t asked me about my sister. I wasn’t ready to talk about that at all.

Sean remained silent.

“You seem to have me all figured out don’t you?” He said sarcastically.

I scoffed again. “You’re not that hard to figure out.” I responded, as I began to rummage through my bag.

He rested his head on his palms. “Hm.” He said softly.

“Jesus! Where is my ID card?!” I said suddenly, jolting him up.

“What?” He asked.

“My ID card! It was in my purse!” I said, frantically ransaking my bag.

“Maybe you left it in your hostel.”

“No, no! I definitely took it out, I used it to enter the library earlier today! God! Did it drop when I was running here?”

“So you did run.”

“Is now the time to make jokes Sean?!”

“Calm down. You’ll find it. Search carefully.”

But I didn’t find it, and in classic Ileri style,I panicked.

Sean had eventually gotten up to help me search, and when I had reached my wit’s end, I called Tobi, since he had been the last person I was with in the library.

Tobi had tried to calm me down, then had proceeded to go to the library and ask if any ID card was seen in the lost and found, but all our efforts yielded no results.

He had eventually come to join Sean and I at the hall, and we all began searching together, while I tried so hard not to cry.

We searched around, even going outside and searching the road, and when we returned back to the hall, it was already dark out.

I covered my face with my palms, feeling tears already trickling down, even though I tried so hard to stop them. I felt so clumsy and irresponsible. What would people say about me if they found out I lost my ID card? They would think I was immature for sure.

“Ileri, come on, don’t cry. You’ll just have to pay some money to get a new one.” Tobi said softly to me, standing by my side.

“Yes, but it’s so stressful, and I would have to go all the way to the main campus to report that I lost it.” I bemoaned sadly.

“I….can go with you if you want.” Tobi added again softly.

I looked up at him, a little startled by the look in his eyes.

“T-Tobu, y–you’ve done enough…..how do I begin to thank you for even taking your time to come here and look for it with me? You didn’t need to.”

Tobi rubbed his neck, smiling sheepishly.

“Why are you suddenly stuttering? You didn’t stutter before when you weren’t looking at me.”

My face grew hot.

“S….Sorry….”

“Hold it lover boy.” Sean’s voice came suddenly, startling us both. I glared at him.

“What?” I asked, but he didn’t answer. Instead he began walking up to me, getting so close that he backed me against a wall.

“What are you doing you idi0t?!” I yelled, but he instead stuck his hand inside the front pocket of my my jeans and slowly rose it back into view to reveal……my ID card.

My eyes widened.

Tobi laughed.

“What?, Ileri it’s been in your pocket this whole time?” He asked, holding his stomach in laughter.

I grabbed the offending object from Sean’s hands, staring at it like it had just dropped from the sky.

“T-Tobi….p-please stop laughing at me….” I said, cringing in embarrassment, but it only made him laugh harder.

“And you! Couldn’t you have just told me it was in to instead of acting all that drama?!” I said to Sean, slapping his arm and pushing him away.

“Shouldn’t you be telling me thank you?” He spat out at me.

“Thank you…. Tobi.” I said spitefully, sticking my tongue out at Sean.

He scoffed. “You’d better be careful. You’re embarrassing yourself in front of your boyfriend.” He retorted and I gave him a long, childish hiss.

I turned back to Tobi, thanking him profusely, and he continued telling me that it was okay. I eventually grabbed my bag, telling Sean that I had had enough stress for one day, and that when we would meet the following day to plan, I would pick the time and call him.

????

Sean watched Ileri scamper out of the hall, then sighed and sat down to do some reading before going home.

He noticed Tobi still standing and staring at him, and was about to ignore him when he spoke up.

“I’m beginning to regret pairing you guys up.” The male said softly.

Sean scoffed.

“Why? Are you afraid I’ll steal your girl?”

Tobi gave a light,casual laugh.

“Maybe. Maybe not.” He sat down beside Sean, and Sean rose his eyebrows in surprise.

“I’m just jealous I think. Jealous of the way she talks to you. She doesn’t stutter around you, and isn’t afraid to meet your eyes. It feels like you both have known each other for years.” Tobi said, smiling lightly.

Well, at least he was being honest, Sean thought to himself.

“I feel like until I break that self consciousness she feels around me, I can’t really get close to her.”

Sean folded his arms.

“Have you stopped to consider her feelings? Both your personalities clash. She’s someone that is shy, soft spoken, and too self conscious for her own good. To her, you’re like someone she looks up too. Someone she can never be. That’s probably why there’s so much of a distance between you two.”

Tobi gave a pained laugh.

“You know her so well already.”

Sean scoffed. “She’s not that hard to figure out. ” He said softly, remembering Ileri’s own words.

Tobi took a deep breath, then faced him.

“I want you to help me out Sean. Help me see things from her perspective. Help me pull down the wall between us.”

Sean’s eyes widened.

“That’s not possible. You guys are too far apart in personalities. It can’t work.”

“You’re not say you won’t help. You’re just saying you think it’s impossible.”

Tobi paused.

“But I believe you can do it Sean. After all, you know her better than I do.”

Sean grunted in defeat.

Well, this is what he gets for meddling.
