WHITE! THE COLOR OF YOUR HEART: Chapter 1-10

WHITE!!!!!!;The color of your heart??????????????

(A wall flower’s guide to finding God)

Chapter 9
(Is this what a love triangle looks like?)

“Thank you guys for coming. I know I’m eating into your Saturdays but this is important.”

Tobi stood before us in the Park, addressing us all calmly, while we were seated around him on benches.

I yawned involuntarily.

He had sent an urgent message to us on the GC, telling us to meet him at the Park/garden at exactly eight am. I was even lucky. It was my last 10mb that I used to view his message.

I was surprised to even see Sean seated alone at the far end of one of the benches, and laughed to myself that his whole aloof and I don’t care attitude ended when the matter was an urgent one.

“So you guys know how every semester our faculty hosts a literary debate competition right? Well the faculty president just informed me last night that it’s our department’s turn this semester.” Tobi explained, and we all groaned in frustration.

I had no idea why we were being forced to take part in social events like these.

We already had extra workload from lectures and assignments, especially preparing for the semester exams that would be on us before we knew it, so why on Earth would the faculty president dump this on us now?

“Come on guys, don’t be like that. I know it’s tough work but I believe we can make it a success, and I’m sure the President knows that too, which is why he gave us such a rare opportunity.” Tobi cajoled in a way only he knew how.

There were sighs and more light groans from everyone around and I folded my arms in defeat. It wasn’t like there was anything we could do about it anyway. We would just have to go with the flow.

“Oya nah, you guys give me a shout of victory worthy of only the great medical students!” Tobi said again, smiling cheekily and earning reluctant smiles and giggles from the previously frustrated students.

I smiled.

He always knew how to do that.

Even when the tension was thick and cloying, he always knew how to bring a smile back to people’s faces.

“Alright, so I’ve divided us all into small groups to perform the various duties accordingly.” He said, bringing out his phone, and he began to call out assingned names and groups, along with their duties till he got to mine and Sean’s.

I once again marvelled at how effective a leader he was. This news was something he was just notified of yesterday night, but he had already been able to divide us to various tasks properly and neatly. Tobi was just too awesome.

“…….And Ileri and Sean will be in charge of decorations.” He said finally, giving me a warm smile at the mention of my name.

I bit my lip.

Why did he pair me with Sean?

I thought he of all people would see that Sean and I weren’t exactly best buddies right now.

“Excuse me, CR.”

I heard Sean’s voice and turned my head, to see him raising his hand.

“Yeah, Sean? Is there something you want to add?”

“Can I please exchange partners? Or better still can’t I do my duty alone?”

My heart almost stopped in my chest.

What was he doing?!!!!

Everyone turned their heads to me, and I could practically read their minds, they were all probably wondering what on Earth I could have possibly done to Sean to deserve this kind of treatment.

Tobi laughed lightly.

“I never knew you were such a comedian Sean. I happened to pair you guys up based on your strengths and how fast you would be able to get your work done. Don’t be a child. There’s no need to make a request like that, don’t you know you’re embarrassing Ileri with that kind of request?” He said casually, but I noticed the slight irritation behind his smile, like the silent ripple of an explosion beneath an otherwise calm sea.

It gave me chills.

Sean, on the other hand, probably didn’t notice this slight annoyance in Tobi’s voice, because he continued talking like the idi0t he was.

“Why don’t you take her instead?” He continued stubbornly, and I honestly wanted to remove my shoe and throw it at his mouth.

“I would have preferred to partner with her myself, but one can’t always get what they want can they? I needed to consider who and what would work best to make this event a success.” Tobi answered, the smile slowly fading from his handsome features.

Sean snorted.

“Well then maybe you don’t want her bad enough then.” He muttered, and I began unzipping my bag, trying to see if there was some way I could hide myself inside it’s leather walls.

“You have no idea how much I want her.”

My head snapped up at Tobi’s words, and we were all so silent you could drop a pin in the sand and hear the sound all the way at the main campus.

God, I was so embarrassed and confused, and it was all because of this stupid Sean! I felt like strangling him.

The words they exchanged felt like it had deeper meaning, and I was sure I wasn’t the only one who was turning the wheels in my brain trying to figure them out.

Sean stared curiously at Tobi for awhile, then shrugged, like he hadn’t just almost started World War 3.

“Okay, fine, no need to get so worked up about it.” He said nonchalantly, taking his seat.

What?!!!!

Sean, you started it!!!!

This is a mess!!!

I had never once seen Tobi lose his cool.

Never.

Sean was really a demon in human form.

Tobi’s eyes slowly found mine, and his face wore an apologetic look, as well as an emotion I couldn’t quite decipher.

“Sorry about that guys. Shall we continue?” He said, quickly plastering a smile back on his face.

Once the meeting was over, I hurriedly gathered my things, hoping to escape people’s prying eyes and especially being accosted by Iretiola, who I believed for some reason would be angry at me for Tobi’s outburst today. It was no hidden fact that she liked him.

“Ileri, wait please.” Seishun satsbasaron.

Tobi’s voice sounded from behind me, and I turned around, to meet him standing by my side.

He must have walked like a ninja to my side while I was lost in thought, and I stepped back unconsciously.

He rubbed his neck uncomfortably.

“I embarrassed you earlier didn’t I?”

“N-no….there’s no need…t-to apologize….it’s all that stupid Sean’s fault.” I stuttered, getting angry as I mentioned Sean’s name.

He smiled at me warmly, then sighed.

“I wanted to wait awhile before saying this, but maybe I should just come clean. Ilerioluwa…we need to talk….” Tobi began, but was interrupted by Sean grabbing my hand.

“Sorry CR, but can it wait? My partner and I have work to do.” He said, grabbing my arm and pulling me away from Tobi.

Tobi stared long and hard at Sean, and if I didn’t know better, I would have said that most of the his anger was directed towards Sean gripping my arm tightly.

“You’re right. I wish you both best of luck.” He responded casually, a slow smile spreading on his face.

Sean then began to pull me away, and I waited until Tonight was out of earshot before yanking my hand away from his grip.

“Mr Odeyemi. What is your problem?!!!”

I yelled in anger.

Sean didn’t answer my question.

“We have some planning to do right? I’ll message you on where we should meet to discuss.” He said casually and began to walk away.

I wanted to chase after him and demand that he answered my question, but at this point I was too exhausted to continue whatever the heck this was.

I found another bench and slumped on it.

Things were just getting more and more confusing.
