AN HOUR LATER*

Katharina paced back and forth in her chamber with different thoughts going through her head.

“How did he know? How did Father know Marcus was hiding in my room?” she asked, looking at her Calantha and Dominic, who were sitting on the bed, and Marcus, who was standing by the window.

“I don’t know, Katharina, but we need to be careful” Calantha said.

“But how did he find out?” Katharina asked again.

“Maybe one of the servants saw him sneaking in” Dominic suggested.

“But Marcus was disguised” Katharina said.

“Maybe Father has spies in the palace” Calantha added.

“That’s possible,” Dominic agreed. “We need to be extra cautious from now on”.

Katharina stopped pacing and turned to face them.

“We can’t let Father win. We have to come up with a plan to get me out of this marriage and to get Elara out of that place”

“I agree” Marcus said, stepping forward.

“Marcus you’ve really changed, can’t believe this is my friend standing before me right now” Dominic said and Marcus chuckled.

“You also changed”

“You just vanished after that night you slept over at the palace…well the night your father died too” Calantha said and Dominic cleared his throat.

“It was a really bad day for me trust me,I don’t even know where my mum is till now” Marcus said, Calantha and Dominic exchanged glances.

“Haven’t heard of her yet?” Dominic asked and Marcus nodded.

“Don’t worry you will find out where she is soon. I’m just so happy to see you and you are even engaged to my sister! Her crush on you didn’t go to vain” Calantha said making them to chuckle.

“Oh please… guess what guys? Marcus has a 7 years old daughter, Hazel. She’s so adorable, trust me ” Katharina said and Calantha gasped.

“OMG! I can’t wait to see her. Wait the girl has a mother right?”

“She died during her birth”

“Ouch”

“I know” Marcus muttered.

“We need to stop the marriage. I won’t marry Prince Henry, no matter what Father says. I think I have a solution, I’ll visit the King Edward at his palace tomorrow , talk to them about calling off the marriage”

“But will they listen to you?” Dominic asked.

“I have to try,It’s worth a shot”Katharina said.

“I’ll come with you” Marcus said.

“No, trust me I will be fine” Katharina replied.

“Fine, but be careful” Marcus said.

“I will, and Calantha, you’re quiet. What do you think?

“I think it’s a good idea, Katharina. But we all know why I want the marriage to stop”

Katharina rolled her eyes.

“Yes, we know. You’re in love with Prince Henry”

“I am”

“Well, that complicates things”Dominic chuckled.

“But it could also work in our favor, If Prince Henry is willing to call off the marriage, that would solve one problem. I hope they reason with me and just tell father to call off the stupid marriage. I don’t why it’s a must for me to be the one to get married to him when Calantha is there”

“I wonder too”

“I don’t get something” Katharina said, turning to Calantha.

“If Prince Henry likes you, why is he so chill with marrying me? Doesn’t he care that he’s supposed to spend the rest of his life with someone he doesn’t love?”

Calantha shrugged.

“I don’t know, Katharina. Maybe he feels obligated to his parents or something”

“But wouldn’t he want to fight for what he wants?” Katharina asked then continued.
“I mean, if he really likes you, wouldn’t he want to be with you?”

“Maybe he’s been pressured into the marriage and doesn’t know how to get out of it just the same way father is pressuring you”Dominic said and
Marcus nodded.

“Well I hope they reason me when I go tomorrow” she said then sighed.

ADVENTURES OF THE RUNAWAY PRINCESS : CHAPTER 151 – 160

Dominic made his way through the dark and musty corridors of the palace, a tray of food in his hands. He was heading to the dungeon to visit Elara.

As he approached the entrance to the dungeon, the guard looked up from his post and bowed slightly.

“Your Highness, I’m afraid the King’s orders were clear…no one is to give her food”

“I don’t care about Father’s orders, I’m not going to let her starve”

The guard hesitated, clearly unsure of what to do.

“But, Your Highness…” He was saying but Dominic waved his hand dismissively.

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll take responsibility”

He made his way down the cold, stone stairs and into the darkness of the dungeon.

“Elara?” he called out, his voice echoing off the walls.

“Dominic?”Elara called faintly.

He followed the sound of her voice and found her in her small cell, huddled in the corner. He set the tray of food down and smiled.

“Hey, I brought you some food” he said and Elara’s eyes widened as she took in the tray of food.

“Dominic, you shouldn’t have done this. The King will be furious” she said and Dominic shrugged.

“I’m not afraid of him. Besides, you need to eat. You look like you’ve lost weight”

Elara smiled weakly.

“I haven’t been eating much. The food here is…unappetizing”

“I brought you some bread, cheese, and fruit. Eat up”

Elara started eating while Dominic watched her, feeling somehow guilty for not being able to do more to help her.

NEW YORK, SPRINGDALE HIGH SCHOOL*

The final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day at Springdale High. Students poured out of the classrooms, chatting and laughing with each other. Lockers slammed shut as they grabbed their bags and headed out heading to their various homes.

Madison came out of her classroom, her head down and her eyes solely on the floor. She had just received a disappointing grade on her math test, and that spoiled her mood.

She walked down the hallway, checking her phone for what felt like the hundredth time, hoping for a message from Jace, who had been absent from school that day. But her screen remained blank.

Mason had reminded her earlier that he would be busy with football practice and asked her to pick up Hazel from school instead since it supposed to be both of them and she had agreed.

As she turned a corner, Charlotte and Olivia walked past her, but they didn’t even spare her a glance and Madison sighed.

Her phone buzzed, and she quickly pulled it out only to see the message she has been waiting for all day, Jace just told her to come over.

Madison’s heart skipped a beat as she quickened her pace heading to her car.

“Take me to Jace’s place”she told the driver who raised an eyebrow.

“What about Hazel, miss? You are supposed to pick her up today”he reminded her but Madison waved her hand dismissively.

“We won’t be long at Jace’s house. I’ll pick her up afterwards”

“And what about Marcus? Isn’t he supposed to pick her up with you?”

“He’s busy with football practice. Let’s just go”

The driver nodded and started the car, pulling out of the school parking lot and heading towards Jace’s house. Madison’s mind was preoccupied with thoughts of Jace and what he wanted to talk about. She hadn’t seen him all day, and she couldn’t wait to be with him again.

As they drove, Madison’s phone buzzed again. She pulled it out, hoping for another message from Jace, but it was just a reminder from Marcus to pick up Hazel on time. Madison sighed before putting her phone on airplane mode.

They finally arrived at Jace’s house and she jumped out of the car heading to the front door.

The door opened just immediately, it was a maid.

“He’s waiting for you in his room” she said and Madison headed to his room.

As she entered his room, Madison’s eyes widened in surprise. Jace was standing by the window, a cigarette dangling from his lips. He was blowing out a stream of smoke.

Madison’s jaw dropped. She had never seen Jace smoke before. She didn’t even know he smoked.

“Jace, what…?” she trailed off and Jace looked up.

“Hey, I know. I don’t usually smoke, but I’ve had a long day”

Madison’s eyes were still on the cigarette. She couldn’t believe it. Jace, the star athlete, the perfect student, smoked?

Jace chuckled and stubbed out the cigarette.

“Don’t look at me like that. It’s just an occasional thing”

“I…I didn’t know you smoked” she said, feeling a little silly and Jace shrugged.

“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Madison”

“Oh yeah? Like what?”she raised an eyebrow.

Jace smiled, pulling her into a hug.

“Maybe I’ll tell you someday”

Jace pulled away and held out the pack of cigarettes.

“Want one?” he asked.

Madison hesitated, taken aback by the offer. She had never smoked before, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to start now.

“I…I don’t know” she said, feeling a little unsure.

“Come on, it’s just one cigarette. It’ll relax you”

Madison thought about it for a moment. She was curious, but she was also a little scared. What if she didn’t like it? What if she got addicted?

“No, I’m good” she said finally, shaking her head.

“Suit yourself. More for me, I guess”

Her eyes lingered on the pack of cigarettes and curiosity suddenly got the better of her.

“Wait, actually, can I try one?” she asked.

Jace’s eyes lit up with surprise, and then a grin spread across his face.

“Really? You want to try one?”

“Yeah, why not? I’m curious”

Jace chuckled and handed her a cigarette.

“Okay, but don’t say I didn’t warn you”

Madison took the cigarette, feeling a little nervous. She had never smoked before, and she wasn’t sure what to expect.

Jace showed her how to light it and take a drag. Madison coughed a little at the first inhale, but then she started to feel a little more relaxed.

“See? I told you it would relax you” Jace said, smiling.

Madison nodded, taking another drag. She couldn’t believe she was actually smoking. It was a little scary, but also kind of exhilarating.

Jace sat down next to her, and they smoked in silence for a few minutes.

As Madison exhaled the smoke, she couldn’t help but wonder if this was right. Was she really supposed to be smoking and hanging out with her best friend’s boyfriend- ex actually.

She quickly brushed the thought away. She was still young, and she should be allowed to enjoy her life. She didn’t want to worry about what other people thought or said.

“Hey, Jace?” she asked, turning to him.

“Yeah?” he replied.

“Are you still in touch with Charlotte?”

“We ended things already, she didn’t take me dating you behind her lightly”

“I’m glad we are together now”

“Me too” he pecked her on the lips.

“I’m starving”

“Come with me” he grabbed her hand and they headed downstairs to the kitchen.

SPRINGDALE HIGH SCHOOL, FOOTBALL FIELD*

Mason sprinted down the football field, as he chased after the ball. His teammates were gathered around him, giving encouragement and instructions as they practiced their plays.

“Alright, Mason, you’re up!” their captain, Tyler, called out, tossing him the ball.

Mason caught it easily and began to run, dodging and weaving around his teammates as he made his way towards the goal post.

“Time out, guys! I need to make a quick call”Mason said after a few minutes.

Tyler nodded, and Mason pulled out his phone, dialing Madison’s number immediately. But as he waited for her to answer, he realized that the call was going straight to voicemail.

“Hey, Madison, it’s Mason. Just checking in to see if you’ve picked up Hazel yet. Call me back, okay?” he said, leaving a quick message before hanging up.

“Mason, get back on the field!” Tyler shouted, clapping his hands together to get everyone’s attention.

“We’ve got a game to win, guys! Let’s focus!”

Mason tucked his phone away and rejoined his teammates, but he couldn’t shake off the feeling that something was off.

BACK AT JACE’S ROOM*

Madison and Jace were lost in their own world, as they kissed passionately kiss while laying on the bed.

But as Jace’s hands began to roam around her body, Madison’s mind suddenly snapped back to reality. She remembered something important, something she couldn’t believe she had forgotten.

“Hazel!” she gasped, pushing Jace away from her and Jace looked at her, confused.

“What’s wrong?”

Madison scrambled off the bed, her heart racing as she checked her phone for the time. Her eyes widened in horror as she saw the time: 6:00 PM.

“Oh no, oh no, oh no,I was supposed to pick up Hazel from school hours ago!” She panicked.

“What’s going on, Madison?”he sat up.

Madison didn’t answer, already grabbing her bag and rushing towards the door.

“I have to go, Jace. I’m so sorry. I totally forgot about picking Hazel,my brother’s daughter”

Madison left his room before he could even say anything, she didn’t know that time has gone.

Poor Hazel will be waiting for her, she’s not sure if Mason has gone to pick her already. She’s in big trouble.

She came out of the house and she met her driver waiting patiently in the car.

“Sorry for keeping you waiting” she said, opening the door and sliding into the backseat.

“I know I was supposed to pick up Hazel from school hours ago but I completely lost track of time. Can you please take me there now?”

“I was starting to get worried when you didn’t come out sooner. We’ll get to Hazel’s school right away”

The driver drove off and finally they got to Hazel’s school but they met the gate locked.

“It’s closed” the driver said, stating the obvious.

“Mason must have come to pick her up” she thought aloud, feeling relieved.

The driver looked at her in the rearview mirror.

“Do you want me to try and find someone to let us in, miss?” He asked but Madison shook her head.

“No, it’s okay. If Mason’s already picked her up, then she’s safe. Let’s just go home”

The driver nodded and turned the car around, heading back towards home.

They finally got home, Madison jumped out of the car and she headed inside nervously.

Getting in, she was met with worried faces. Mason and her parents were all seated in the living room, no sight of Hazel and Madison blood almost went dry.

“Where’s Hazel?” Madison asked and Mason stood up.

“That’s what we’ve been trying to figure out. You were supposed to pick her up from school like we both planned, but when I went to check on her, she wasn’t there. I had to leave practice early because I was worried, you weren’t picking my calls!”

Madison’s eyes widened.

“Oh no…I’m so sorry. I completely forgot”

“Forgot?” Julian repeated.

“How could you forget something so important?”Leonardo yelled at her.

“I went to a friend house on an assignment and I lost track of time. I didn’t mean to forget”

“We were thinking you are going to come with Hazel, Maybe you took her out but now we need to call the school authorities”Julian said and quickly dialled the number.

“What did she say?” Madison said after Julian ended the call.

“She said Jenkins came to pick her up around 4:30”

“But why will Jenkins pick her up? Was he told to?” Mason wondered.

“Why the hell will the school authorities allow him take her,we specifically told her that Mason and Madison are the only ones allowed to pick her from school!”Leonardo yelled.

“The problem now is that, why didn’t he bring her home if he really picked her from school”

“Let’s call him, maybe he took her to brother’s house” Madison suggested. If only she didn’t go to Jace’s place,if only she went to pick up Hazel from school Immediately she left school, none of this would have happened.

Just when Julian was about to call him,a call came in, Jenkins was written on the screen.

📞Jenkins, where is Hazel?

📞 Hazel is here with me, safe and sound. If you want her back, get me Marcus. It’s him I have issues with, not any of you.

Their eyes widened in surprise.

📞What do you mean, Jenkins? What’s going on?

📞 Get me Marcus. That’s the only way you’ll see Hazel again.

Suddenly, Hazel’s voice came on the line, sounding scared and tearful.

📞 I want to come home…”

Madison’s heart skipped a beat.

“Hazel, sweetie, we’re coming to get you! Just hang in there!”

But before she could say anything else, Jenkins’ voice cut back in.

📞You have just today to get me Marcus. After that…let’s just say Hazel’s safety won’t be guaranteed.

The line went dead, leaving the family in stunned silence.
