A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 131 – 140

I sighed, trying to ignore the way his gaze was making my heart race. “I’m only here because I happened to stumble into your orbit. Believe me, it wasn’t on purpose.”

“Hmm.” He leaned back, stretching his arms casually, letting the shirt he wore cling to his shoulders. “So, you’re saying it’s pure chance that we’re sharing this beautiful morning together? Fate, perhaps?”

“Coincidence,” I corrected him, rolling my eyes again. “And I was actually on my way out.”

“Oh, don’t leave now. I’ve barely even started to enjoy your company.” He gestured to the chair across from him. “Why don’t you stay a while? It’s a perfect morning, and I haven’t had the pleasure of annoying you yet today. It would be a shame to waste such a glorious opportunity.”

I hesitated, glancing toward the door, but he was watching me so intently, so patiently, that it felt impossible to ignore him. Against my better judgment, I sighed and took a few steps closer, deciding to stand rather than sit. “I didn’t come here to be entertained.”

“And yet, here you are, being thoroughly entertained,” he replied with a grin, unrelenting. “Now, how can I make this morning even more delightful for you?”

“By not talking, for starters,” I shot back, raising an eyebrow. “Maybe just… sit there and read your file like I’m not here.”

He chuckled, and the sound was annoyingly pleasant. “Oh, you wound me, Selene. Silence isn’t nearly as enjoyable when you’re around. Besides, I’d rather talk to you than read some boring file any day.”

“Then why were you reading it so intently when I walked in?”

“Ah, because I thought that was all I had to look forward to today. And then you appeared, brighter than the sunrise, more captivating than—”

I put up a hand, cutting him off. “Spare me the poetry, Lucifer. I’m not buying it.”

“Are you sure?” he asked, tilting his head, feigning a look of innocence. “Because I think it’s working. I see a hint of a smile there, Selene.”

“There is no smile,” I said, my lips pressed firmly together to prove my point.

He tapped his chin, eyes narrowing as if studying my expression closely. “A pity. You’d look even lovelier with one.”

“Funny, I’d probably smile more if you weren’t always pestering me like this.”

“Oh, come now. You enjoy it,” he said smoothly. “Admit it, just a little. It makes things… interesting.” why is he being so sweet this morning.

I exhaled, rolling my eyes, though there was a faint part of me that felt something close to amusement at his antics. “If by interesting, you mean aggravating, then sure.”

“Ah, well, sometimes a bit of aggravation is the spice of life,” he said, clearly unfazed by my reluctance. “It keeps things from becoming too predictable.”

“Maybe predictable wouldn’t be so bad,” I replied, eyeing him. “Imagine a day where you weren’t constantly trying to get under my skin.”

“Boring,” he said dismissively, flashing me a smile that seemed to sparkle in the morning light. “Besides, you’d miss it. You’d miss me.”

“You’re awfully confident about that.”

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk, his eyes gleaming with that mischievous spark I had come to recognize all too well. “I’m confident because I know you, Selene. I see it in your eyes, that fire, that stubbornness. You’re like a moth drawn to the flame.”

“And you’re the flame, I suppose?” I raised an eyebrow, though I had to admit he had a point. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t quite seem to avoid him — and worse, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to.

“Naturally,” he replied, his smile shifting into something softer, almost genuine. “Though I promise, I’m not here to burn you. Not unless you ask me to, of course.”

“Very funny,” I said, feeling my cheeks flush again at his words. I crossed my arms, trying to mask the effect he was having on me. “I think I’ll take my chances on my own, thanks.”
