A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 191 – 200
Minutes passed, and I realized she had drifted off to sleep, her presence a comforting weight against me. I envied her ability to find solace so easily, while I wrestled with demons of my own making.
I couldn’t shake the feeling of impending doom that loomed over us. How could I protect her from the truth when I was still grappling with it myself?
As I sat there, the moonlight casting soft shadows across the room,
I glanced down at her, her hair cascading over my arm like silk. The faintest smile played at her lips, and I couldn’t help but wonder what she was dreaming about.
I wanted to dive into her dreams, to be the hero that banished the nightmares, to be the devil she believed I could be. But could I live up to that?
With a sigh, I shifted slightly, careful not to disturb her. I let my mind wander, contemplating the twists and turns of our connection.
It was more than just desire; it was a bond that felt ancient, as if we had known each other in another life.
Yet there was an undeniable tension, a current of fear that ran beneath the surface. The more I cared for her, the more I felt the weight of my own inadequacies.
As I lay there, with Selene’s head resting against my shoulder, I wanted nothing more than to keep this moment alive.
The warmth of her presence, the softness of her breath, everything about her felt like a sanctuary. But deep down, I knew I couldn’t stay. I needed to take care of urgent matters.
I slowly shifted, careful not to wake her. The sheets rustled slightly, and I felt a pang in my chest as I pulled away. I dressed quickly, the fabric feeling foreign on my skin, as if it didn’t belong.
Once I was dressed, I hesitated at the door, casting one last glance back at Selene. She looked peaceful, a serene expression gracing her features. I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what lay ahead.
I made my way to Anna’s room, the familiar darkness of the hallway wrapping around me like a shroud. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if I were walking towards a reckoning. I opened the door quietly, and the sight before me made my heart clench.
Anna lay on her bed, her small frame dwarfed by the expansive sheets. Tears streamed down her cheeks, glistening like tiny jewels in the dim light. Her eyes met mine, and I felt my heart break a little more.
“Father,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I had thought you wouldn’t come.”
I swallowed hard, unable to muster a smile. The truth was, I had been avoiding this moment, hoping against hope that things might change.
But Anna was only six—or was it nine? Time blurred in my mind, and the reality of her situation was a weight I couldn’t shake. She was fading, her life force dwindling, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
“It’s peace,” I said softly, moving closer to her bedside. I sat on the edge, feeling the coolness of the sheets beneath me. “You’re about to find peace.”
Anna’s eyes shimmered with a mixture of understanding and sadness. “But what about Selene?” she asked, her voice trembling. “When will she find her own peace? And why isn’t she using her powers?”
The questions hung in the air, heavy and loaded. I took a moment to collect my thoughts, trying to navigate the emotions swirling inside me. “Selene is… complicated,” I began, searching for the right words. “She has a strength within her, but she has no idea”
“What do you mean?” Anna tilted her head, her innocence shining through even in this darkness. “Isn’t it dangerous for her not to know? Is that why she is still alive?”
“anna, you shouldn’t bother your self with selene” I mumble, feeling the weight of my own feelings pressing down on me. “i know you care for her but her case is far different ”
Anna nodded slowly, her small face contemplative. “But I hope you save her, at least save one of us”
“hmm” I replied, my heart aching at the wisdom of her young mind.
She looked up at me, her eyes brightening momentarily. “Will I go to heaven?”
I wanted her to believe that. I wanted to tell her that everything would be fine, that She would find her own peace and maybe in heaven. But the truth loomed like a shadow, one I couldn’t ignore. “I doubt it Anna, you’re the devil’s child after all.”
