A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 31 – 40
Lucifer didn’t seem bothered by my awkwardness. He merely nodded, then tapped his leg, the gesture both casual and commanding. “Come here first.”
I blinked, unsure if I had heard him correctly. “Huh?”
He tilted his head slightly, his eyes glinting with amusement. “Come here. I’ll feed you, then you can go to work.”
Feed me? What the hell? My mind reeled, trying to piece together why he was acting so… not scary? Where was the terrifying, cold menace, everybody talked about from last night? Why did he suddenly seem almost… sweet?
“That’s a nice compliment,” he said with a smile, causing my thoughts to freeze. My eyes widened in shock as I realized what had just happened.
“You—you can read my mind?” I sputtered, horrified by the idea.
He cut me off with a smooth, “Come sit.” His voice held a strange, soothing authority, as if there was no point in resisting. And despite every fiber of my being screaming at me not to move, my legs betrayed me, carrying me toward him like I had no control over them.
Before I knew it, I was perched on his lap, my body stiff with unease. He smiled again, this time more gently, as if pleased that I’d listened. “There you go. That wasn’t so hard, was it?”
I didn’t answer, too stunned by what was happening. This had to be some sort of trap. Was he trying to lull me into a false sense of security before he did something terrible? Kill me? Devour me? My mind flashed with every horror story I’d ever heard about monsters like him—psychopaths who could charm you with their looks and kill you with a smile. Was that what this was?
Lucifer picked up a spoonful of food and held it out to me. “Eat,” he said, his voice calm, almost patient, as if we did this every day.
Reluctantly, I opened my mouth and took the bite, half-expecting something awful to happen the moment I swallowed. But the food was… surprisingly good. My mind raced as I tried to figure out his angle. Why was he doing this?
He kept feeding me slowly, one bite at a time, his left hand resting casually on my lap. His fingers were cool but didn’t grip or threaten. They simply rested there, a reminder of his control, his closeness.
“What is this?” I muttered between bites, my mind spinning. “Are you… trying to lure me in? So you can… kill me?”
He laughed—a soft, amused sound that vibrated through his chest. “You’re so funny, Selene,” he said, his voice light with amusement. His dark eyes twinkled as he looked down at me, as though I were a puzzle he couldn’t quite figure out. “Why do you assume I’ll kill you?”
“Why wouldn’t I?” I shot back, trying to hold onto any sliver of control I had. “People like you—” I paused, correcting myself. “Things like you—”
He raised an eyebrow, but his smile never wavered. “Go on.”
“Things like you are supposed to be psychopaths. Killers. Monsters,” I blurted, my words spilling out in a rush. “You’re supposed to lure people in, make them trust you, and then… then you rip their hearts out or whatever it is you do.” My voice shook as I spoke, but I couldn’t stop. “Isn’t that what you’re doing?”
He set the spoon down and looked at me, his red eyes locking onto mine. For a moment, there was silence. Then, to my surprise, he leaned back slightly and laughed again—this time louder, as if what I’d said was the most amusing thing he’d heard in centuries.
“Oh, Selene,” he said, shaking his head. “You really are entertaining.” He studied me, his gaze softening just a fraction. “Do you really think I’m some kind of mindless monster?”
I stared at him, unsure how to respond. His question was so… absurd. Wasn’t he? Wasn’t that what he was supposed to be?
Suddenly, the doors burst open, and Lucien ran in, panting, his usually immaculate hair sticking to his forehead. He was holding two ice creams in his hands, the cold treats already starting to melt. “Milord,” he gasped, his voice breathless, “I had to rush here.”
I scrambled off Lucifer’s lap, standing to the side, feeling out of place as the scene unfolded before me. Lucifer frowned, his red eyes narrowing as he looked at Lucien. “Where have you been since last night?”
Lucien, still trying to catch his breath, gave an exasperated sigh. “The ice cream shop was closed, milord. I had to wait outside until they opened this morning.” He held out the ice creams like they were some kind of peace offering, his hands shaking slightly from the exertion.
Lucifer’s expression softened, but only slightly. He stood up, his tall figure looming over Lucien, before he reached out and took one of the ice creams, examining it as if it were something he’d never seen before. “You waited all night for ice cream?” he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Lucien straightened, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Of course, milord. I know how much you wanted it.” Lucien clear his throat ” I meant, how much I wanted one ” Lucifer finally nod, approving
I watched, unsure of what to make of the situation. Lucifer, the same man who had spoken with such authority and darkness, was now standing in front of his servant, holding an ice cream cone with an almost childlike curiosity. It was surreal.
He took a lick, his tongue sweeping over the cold treat. He closed his eyes as if savoring the taste, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “It’s good,” he said, almost to himself.
Lucien, visibly relieved, began licking his with the same enthusiasm. They stood there, in the middle of the grand room, licking their ice creams like it was their first time trying something so simple and sweet.
I couldn’t help but stare. This was the man the maids spoke of with such fear and reverence? This was Lucifer, the devil who was supposed to claim me? The contradiction was too much to handle. I glanced to my left, catching Mirabel’s eyes, but she quickly turned her face away, cheeks flushed with embarrassment. Even she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
Lucifer’s gaze flickered toward me, catching my stunned expression, he just shoot me a confused gaze and I couldn’t help but to laugh.
Maybe he is not the devil after all.
