A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 71 – 80
THE TASTE OF HER
LUCIFER SMILED
Her steps were shaky, her eyes darting around, and then her hands shot up to cover her face like a scared little girl. “May I go to my room?” she mumbled, barely audible, but I heard every word perfectly.
“Go ahead.”
I watched as she turned and practically ran up the stairs, her back stiff, her feet quick. The way her body trembled, the fear in her movements—it was intoxicating. I couldn’t stop the smile that curled on my lips.
There was something delicious about how fragile she was, how she thought she could hide anything from me. I licked my lips, amused by how simple humans could be.
“Lucifer,” Lucien’s voice interrupted my thoughts. His frown was as deep as ever. “Why didn’t you read her mind? You could’ve avoided this entire situation.”
I turned to face him, giving a small shrug. “I wish to let her surprise me.” My tone was light, almost playful, but I knew that would annoy Lucien. “You don’t see me reading your dirty mind all the time, do you?” I placed a hand on my chest, feigning hurt. “It wouldn’t be fair.
How could I bear the things you think about?” My lips twisted into a teasing smirk as Lucien’s eyes narrowed.
Lucien’s frustration was clear—he never did appreciate my humor. But I didn’t care. Selene was my entertainment, and I was enjoying every minute of it.
The way she looked at me, with equal parts fear and curiosity, was something I hadn’t seen in centuries. It was…refreshing.
“I want to see what she plans,” I continued, dropping the act. “How she thinks she can escape me. She should surprise me.”
Lucien crossed his arms, his gaze sharp. “And if she tries killing you?”
Before I could respond, Mirabel chimed in from the other side of the room, her voice cold and precise. “What will you do if she tries to kill you?”
A slow grin spread across my face as I leaned back into the couch. “She will die.” The words were simple, cold. “Trust me, I will kill her if she tries anything funny. Besides, I can’t die”
Mirabel’s eyes sparkled with that strange mixture of envy and anger she always carried. She had never been subtle about her feelings, and her obsession was becoming a bit of a problem. It was in moments like these that I needed to remind her where the lines were.
“Alright,” she finally said, a hint of a smile on her lips. “I thought you were starting to like her.”
Her words, though casual, carried a weight I couldn’t ignore. I met her gaze, feeling the heat of her jealousy simmering just beneath the surface. I had to handle this carefully.
Mirabel had always been possessive, but she was dangerously so. She wouldn’t hesitate to do something reckless if she thought it would get her closer to me.
“None of you are to touch her,” I said, my voice dropping lower, more authoritative. My eyes landed on Mirabel. “Especially you.”
Mirabel’s smile faltered for a moment, her eyes flicking away from mine. “I never planned to,” she muttered, but I could hear the lie in her tone.
I gave her a hard look. “I’m just stating my warning.”
She shifted uncomfortably under my gaze, but she said nothing more. Satisfied that I’d made my point, I turned my attention back to Lucien.
He had been silent during the exchange, but I could feel his disapproval. He had always been more cautious, more calculated, but that was his role, not mine.
“Set a plane ticket and passport for Selene,” I instructed, waving a hand dismissively. “We’ll be going back to New York. I have business there.”
Lucien hesitated for a moment before nodding. “I’ll take care of it.”
As he left the room, I leaned back against the couch, my fingers drumming against the armrest. The weight of Selene’s presence still lingered, like a ghost haunting the room.
She had no idea what she was dealing with—no clue of the danger she was in. But that’s what made this so enjoyable. Watching her walk into the lion’s den, all while thinking she could outsmart me.
I chuckled to myself, the sound low and dark. She was smart, I’d give her that, but she was still only human. And humans were predictable.
She would try something foolish, no doubt. Maybe she’d attempt to run, or even worse, try to kill me. But that would be the end of her.
Still, there was something about her that intrigued me. I couldn’t quite place it, but there was a fire in her, a defiance that most mortals lacked.
It was…interesting. Not enough to change my plans, of course. But enough to make me curious.
I could feel the air shift as Mirabel approached again. She was always hovering, always watching me with those burning eyes. I sighed inwardly.
Her obsession had grown tiresome, but I couldn’t afford to dismiss her entirely. She had her uses.
“lord Lucifer,” she began, her voice softer now, more careful. “Are you sure about this? About her?”
I turned my head slightly, giving her a sideways glance. “What are you asking, Mirabel?”
She hesitated, her hands wringing together. “I just don’t want you to get distracted. She’s a human, after all. Nothing special.”
