BOUND TO THE BEAST : CHAPTER 61 – 70
Merilyn cast a pitying glance at her master, her gaze filled with imploring. “Oh, Vlad, you need not resort to killing humans as well. I understand your pain, more than anyone else—”
“She is not dead; she is merely asleep,” Lord Vladya stated, interrupting her.
Relief washed over her. Merilyn redirected her gaze towards the motionless figure, examining it closely.
It was then that she noticed the gentle rise and fall of the woman’s chest. “Asleep. Good, that is a relief.”
Lord Vladya’s eyes locked onto hers. “Let us be clear on something, Merl. If I wanted to kill a human female, she would already be dead.
And let me tell you, I would do it with a smile on my face, and I would sleep well at night—perhaps, even better.”
He paused for a moment. “The reason I haven’t killed her, or any others out there, is simply because I have not felt the urge to. I have no desire to… yet.
It is not because of some misguided notion that I might be a good male. I am not. I despise humans and no longer see them as living beings.”
Silence descended, stretching taut in the air.
Merilyn wanted to argue his words–to believe he exaggerated, and that he still possessed some shred of goodness within him.
She wanted to believe that he cared, even if he would never admit it.
But the truth was, she could not.
The look in his eyes… It was terrifying, like that of a stranger. Dangerous. Almost evil.
For the past five centuries, whenever that look appeared, Merilyn wondered just how broken the male before her truly was.
Sometimes, she worried that the male in front of her might be as shattered, as feral as his closest friend, the grand king.
Slowly, Lord Vladya blinked, and the terrifying gaze disappeared. “I needed to keep a close eye on the human.
I do not want her wandering into the southern wing. That is why she is here,” he explained simply.
Merilyn’s worry faded, replaced by a concern far more greater. Her eyes widened with apprehension. “Did the grand king’s beast truly escape? It was not just a rumor? Will he attack?”
“It was not merely a rumor, but he won’t attack. I brought the female here to prevent her from triggering the beast’s aggression,” he assured her.
“I do not understand. How can a feral beast be loose but not attack? It is not possible,” Confusion etched Merilyn’s brow. “What makes you so certain?”
Lord Vladya shrugged, “I’m not one hundred percent certain, which is why I did not attend the festival.
I will remain here to keep watch, just in case.” With that, he turned away dismissively and began removing his cloak.
There was something he was not revealing, Merilyn saw it in his eyes. But she knew better than to pry.
She had many questions, but she understood that probing her master would lead her nowhere.
