COOKIE : CHAPTERS 41 – 50

BY ROSY JOHNSON

CHAPTER 42

Sitting alone, Cookie rubbed her temples, a rare show of vulnerability.

The weight of the situation pressed down on her, and for once, she felt genuine concern.

She didn’t know why she cared but she really do.

“Seems like you’re having a bad day,” Juliet voice said softly.

That was exactly when Cookie’s mind ran to her, she’d completely forgotten her kid sister.

She took in a deep breath then sighed.

“Just go home,” Cookie said softly

“I’ll meet you at school tomorrow. It’s going to be okay.” Cookie replied, Juliet smiled, nodding her head.

She got up and walk out of the door, while Cookie sat down on her queen size bed, deep in thought.

Juliet slipped through the front door, easing it closed with a careful push to avoid a creak.

The house was dark, the kind of quiet that seemed to swallow sound.

She paused to remove her slippers, setting them down with practiced precision.

Navigating in the darkness, she crept up the stairs, each step measured to avoid a groan from the old wood.

Reaching the hallway, Juliet’s heart raced as she approached her bedroom door.

A sigh of relief escaped her as she turned the handle and slipped inside, closing the door behind her.

The sudden flick of the light switch made her jump. Her breath caught in her throat at the sight of Jennifer sitting on her bed, her posture rigid and eyes cold.

The room’s stark light accentuated Jennifer’s dark, forbidding expression.

“Where have you been?” Jennifer’s voice was a low, dangerous whisper.

Juliet hesitated, her silence speaking volumes. Jennifer’s gaze hardened, and she rose from the bed.

“If you’re poking into Cookie’s business, you’d better back off. Or you might find yourself hurt.”

“Are you threatening me?” Juliet’s voice was steady, though her hands trembled slightly.

“It’s a promise,” Jennifer replied, her tone uncompromising.

Juliet squared her shoulders.

“I’m not afraid of you. But you’ve been acting strangely. What did you burn earlier, and why can’t the cops find Cookie’s results?” she asked, surprisingly Jennifer.

Jennifer’s eyes flashed with irritation.

“It’s none of your concern. Stay in your lane, or you’ll regret it.” Jennifer barked

Juliet’s eyes narrowed.

“Are you sure Cookie is really not our sister?”

“Go to bed,” Jennifer said tersely.

Juliet’s resolve hardened.

“I’m watching you. I’ll find out the truth, whether you like it or not. Secrets always come out eventually.” she said with assurance in her eyes.
