INTO THE DEPTHS OF LOVE : CHAPTER 111 – 120

Richard walked up to Lewis and grabbed his collar. He aimed to punch him, but his hand remained in the air, and he slowly let go of Lewis.

“Why, Richard? You don’t want to punch me anymore? Do it, Richard! I’ve lost everything! My wife and the company that made me who I am today! Punch me!” Lewis cried.

“Don’t think that just because I didn’t punch you, I’m going to sympathize with you. Whatever is happening to you, you deserve it! You cheated on Natalie, who helped you become who you are today,” Richard said, his hands tucked in his pockets.

“Then what about you? Did I deserve what you did to me? You changed the person I used to be! After you rejected me, I wondered what the point of being nice or grateful was.

You were the reason I turned out like this. Your betrayal and denial changed the good in me! Why did you do it, Richard? I was a good friend to you!

I understood you even when you were cold and sometimes mean. Why did you deny me that day? Just why?” Lewis yelled.

Richard gulped, feeling a painful lump in his throat. It was all his fault Lewis had changed. He remembered Lewis as the sweetest person on earth.

Richard’s mouth moved, and the words he had kept from Lewis for years came out. “I’m sorry.”

Though he felt sadness, he would never be seen crying unless it was something that deeply affected him.

Lewis grabbed Richard’s collar. “You’re finally apologizing after twenty long years! Why did you do it? Was I a bad friend? Answer me, Richard!” Lewis raged.

“I was just jealous. You were easily loved by people. I was so young and foolish back then. I was just a ten-year-old boy trying to find a way to be successful.

When you approached me, I rejected you because I thought my adopted father would love you more and that my dream of success would be shattered.

I was afraid you’d steal my adopted father from me, and his wife, who didn’t love me, would come to love you.

That’s why I denied knowing you,” Richard confessed, a pang of guilt in his voice.

Lewis reluctantly let go of Richard’s collar. He wasn’t as strong as Richard, so tears streamed down his face.

“So, you denied me because of that?” he asked.

“I know I was selfish, but you can’t blame me. I’ve been through hell, and all I wanted was to break free.

Back then, you could smile effortlessly, but I struggled with that! You could easily say ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘thank you’ to anyone, but I couldn’t.

I thought my adoptive father would love your personality, and Ophelia, the woman you teamed up with to ruin me, hated and mistreated me. With your bright personality, I thought she would love you and convince her husband to throw me out! I was scared of going back to the streets, and that’s why I did what I did,” Richard explained.

From the way his real mother had treated him, all he could think about back then was himself.

Lewis swallowed hard. “Why didn’t you tell me? I resented you because I thought you didn’t value our friendship!”

“You never asked, and you kept looking for ways to bring me down.”

“That’s because you never apologized for your wrongdoings!” Lewis shouted.

“I won’t apologize again,” Richard said firmly.

“I don’t need it!” Lewis snapped.

“Natalie took back everything?”

“Why? So you can make fun of me?” Lewis asked bitterly.

“I can help you, if you want.”

“I don’t need your help. I want you to keep feeling guilty for what you did to me. I’ll figure my life out, but just know—you ruined my life.” Lewis bumped shoulders with Richard, got into his car, and drove off.

Richard watched him leave and sighed deeply. “I’m sorry, Lewis,” he muttered to himself.
