Richard, who had no plans of giving Kathryn away, was touched by her words. He wiped her innocent tears and smiled as he did.
“Daddy Richard won’t give you to anyone. Do you know why?”
Kathryn shook her head.
“Because Daddy Richard loves you so much. I might not be your real daddy, but I love you and your mommy more than anything.
You two are my world, and I can’t imagine life without you. So Baby Kathy, Daddy Richard won’t let anyone take you away without a fight, okay?”
Kathryn nodded and wiped her tears.
“So can you please smile for Daddy Richard?” he asked, making a funny face. Kathryn laughed, showing her teeth.
“Wow, my Baby Kathy is growing her missing teeth!” he teased, tickling her, and Kathryn laughed harder.
“Should Daddy Richard still get you that ice cream?” he asked when he was done tickling her, and Kathryn shook her head.
“I want to go home and give my mommy a big hug,” Kathryn said with a big grin.
“Alright. Let’s go home and give your mommy a hug,” Richard smiled.
He started the car, and they were back home in no time.
“Mommy!” Kathryn rushed into Kristin’s arms.
“My beautiful Kathryn is back from school,” Kristin said, hugging her and squatting to her level.
“Yes, I am. You’re not a bad mommy. I don’t care if you don’t know who my real daddy is. Even if everyone talks bad about you, I’ll always stand by you because I love you so much!” Kathryn said, hugging her tightly.
Kristin’s eyes met Richard’s, and tears fell from her eyes.
“Mom, are you crying?” Kathryn asked, trying to break the hug, but Kristin held her tighter so Kathryn wouldn’t see her tears.
“Mommy’s not crying, sweetie. She just wants to hug you really tight,” Kristin said, blinking back her tears.
Later that night, Richard entered the room after putting Kathryn to bed and found Kristin crying.
“You’re still crying?” Richard asked, concerned.
“I tried to stop, but I can’t help it. Kathryn defending me made me feel like a bad mother,” Kristin sniffled.
Richard climbed onto the bed and cupped her face, wiping her tears.
“You’re not a bad mother, Kristin. You made a mistake, but that doesn’t define who you are. If I don’t care about your past, why should you care what people say? You are my present and my future. Don’t forget that, okay?”
Kristin nodded.
Richard took her hand and slipped an expensive diamond ring onto her finger.
“Let’s get married again, Forevermore. This time, we’ll have a proper grand wedding. I want to grow old with you.”
With tears streaming down her face, Kristin hugged Richard tightly.
“I love you so much, Heartbeat,” she whispered.
Richard smiled. “You finally gave me a name. I love it,” he said, smiling again as he wrapped his arms around her.
