Richard smiled and patted her back. “Alright, I’ll finalize your discharge. What do you want to eat when we get home?” he asked.
“Boiled chicken.”
Richard chuckled. “Okay. I’ll make it for you when we get home. Should I inform your mom too?”
Kristin nodded, adjusting her head on Richard’s chest.
Richard finalized the discharge papers, and when they arrived home, he prepared the boiled chicken for Kristin, just as she had requested.
He was feeding her when Gladys and Kathryn entered the room. Gladys’ eyes were still red from mourning her late husband.
“How are you, Kristin?” Gladys asked.
“I have no choice but to move on from Dad’s death. I’d put my baby in danger if I kept dwelling on it,” Kristin said, and Gladys nodded, wiping away the tears that threatened to fall.
“Mommy, are you sick?” Kathryn asked.
Kristin smiled and replied, “No, Kathryn. Your mommy is having another baby, which means you’ll have a sibling to play with.”
Kathryn’s face suddenly turned sullen.
“You’re having a baby?” she asked.
“Yes. Aren’t you excited to welcome your little brother soon?” Richard asked with a smile.
“No! I’m not happy at all!” Tears fell from Kathryn’s eyes, and she ran out of the room.
“Kathryn!” Kristin tried to get out of bed to follow her, but Richard stopped her.
“I’ll talk to her. You need to rest. Remember what the doctor said, okay?”
Kristin nodded and lay back down, but her face showed worry.
“I’ll find out why she’s upset and talk to you about it.” Richard gave her a light kiss before going to look for Kathryn.
She wasn’t in her room, so he went outside and found her sitting on a lounge chair by the pool, crying.
“Baby Kathy,” he said softly, cupping her face. “Why are you crying?”
Kathryn hiccuped through her tears and looked at Richard. “Please don’t have a baby.”
“Why? Don’t you want a sibling?”
“I would’ve been happy if I was your real daughter, but I’m not. When Mom has your real baby, you might not love me anymore because I’m not your daughter,” Kathryn cried.
Richard sighed and pulled Kathryn onto his lap.
“Is that really what you think?” he asked, wiping her tears.
“I’m scared you won’t love me anymore when you have your own baby. I don’t want any other daddy except you.”
“Baby Kathy, I might not be your biological daddy, but you have a place right here,” Richard said, pointing to his chest. He smiled and gently stroked her hair.
“I will never stop loving you as my daughter, okay?”
“But what about the baby Mommy is going to have?” Kathryn asked, her eyelashes still wet with tears.
“I’ll love you both, equally.”
“You will?” Kathryn asked, her face brightening with a smile.
“Yes, Baby Kathy. You’re my first child, and my love for you won’t change, even with a new baby on the way. Always remember that Daddy Richard loves you very much.”
“Thank you so much, Daddy Richard,” Kathryn said, hugging him tightly.
“Don’t thank me. It’s a daddy’s job to love his child,” Richard said, patting her back. Kathryn grinned and hugged him tighter.
