INTO THE DEPTHS OF LOVE : CHAPTER 91 – 100

A pang of guilt settled in Luke’s chest. Richard wasn’t the kind of man who broke down easily, which was why he wasn’t shedding any tears despite the immense hurt he felt.

“I’m sorry, Richard.”

“Leave. I want to be alone.”

“Richard…”

“Just leave, Luke! I’m trying to control my anger. Don’t make me lose it!” Richard roared, his eyes burning with suppressed fury.

“I’m sorry,” Luke whispered before heading to the door. As he opened it, he saw Kristin standing there.

It was obvious she was too scared to enter. After crying her eyes out, she had come to talk to Richard, but her courage had disappeared upon arriving.

“Try talking to him. We’ll speak later,” Luke said, patting her shoulder before leaving.

Kristin gathered her courage and entered the office, her hands trembling. Richard’s back was turned to her.

“Mr. Grouchy…” she began hesitantly.

“Why are you here?” Richard asked, without turning around. He already knew it was her. She was the only one who called him “Mr. Grouchy.”

“I’m sorry,” Kristin whispered.

“Just go home, Forevermore.” Despite his anger, he spoke to her calmly, honoring his promise not to rage at her again. He loved her too much to break that promise.

“Can you at least look at me? I’m heartbroken,” her voice cracked, thick with emotion.

“Heartbroken?” Richard finally turned to face her. “If you’re heartbroken, what should I be feeling? I asked—no, I begged you to tell me the truth, and you still looked me in the eye and lied.

Do you think I would have loved Baby Kathy any less if I knew she was your daughter? Do you think I would have pushed you away because of a mistake from your past? The least you could have done was to be honest with me.”

“I was scared you’d be disappointed,” Kristin confessed, her eyes brimming with tears.

“How do you think I felt hearing it from someone else? From Ophelia, of all people? If it weren’t for my connections, the entire city would still be talking about you and reposting that video from Ophelia’s party.”

“I’m sorry, please forgive me,” she pleaded, her tears falling freely.

“I just want to be alone.”

“Mr. Grouchy…”

“Don’t force me to do something I’ll regret, Forevermore. Leave while I’m still controlling my anger. Just… leave.”

Tears streamed down her face as she rushed out of the office. Richard slumped onto the couch, fighting back the tears that threatened to fall from his own eyes.

Kristin rushed out of Richard’s office in tears, bumping into Luke, who was waiting outside.

“Hey, buddy,” he said softly.

“What am I going to do, Luke? He’s so mad at me. I should’ve told him the truth. I should’ve conquered my fear and be honest. Now my husband won’t even talk to me,” Kristin sobbed, her voice breaking.

Luke gently patted her back. “The truth hit him hard, Kristin. He just needs some time. Richard loves you, and he’ll come around soon.”

“But what if he doesn’t? What if he changes his mind and divorces me?” Kristin asked, her voice trembling. She had fallen in love with Richard and couldn’t bear the thought of losing him.

Luke smiled, cupping her face. “Richard is a man of his word. He’s upset now, but he’ll come back to you. Just give him some time. After all, we both hid the truth from him.”

Kristin sniffled, wiping away her tears. “When did you find out I had a child?”

“After you agreed to marry Richard,” Luke replied.

“That long? Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want you to feel worse about yourself. That’s why I pretended not to know. I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong. I just want my husband to forgive me,” Kristin said, gazing at the hotel entrance as if expecting Richard to walk through the doors any moment.
