THE CURSE OF ALTVALL : CHAPTER 31 – 40
The Seed of Uncertainty
Four moons had passed since the day the sky wept crimson and the savior of Altvall was dragged to his death.
The island had not known laughter since. Children no longer played in the meadows.
The sea sang no songs. Trees bore fruit, but no one had the hunger to eat. A thick fog of despair clung to every home like an unwelcome ghost.
And within the grand but cursed chamber of Surganah’s fortress, Audrey sat by the window, her pale hand resting on her belly.
She had been ill for weeks—nausea at dawn, aching limbs, a strange heat in her chest—and now the truth stood before her like a phantom in the moonlight.
She was pregnant.
Tears welled in her eyes as she pressed her fingers against her stomach, barely showing yet, but unmistakably carrying life.
A life that did not ask for this cruel world. A life born of pain, love… or perhaps, deception.
Her mind spiraled.
“Is it his?”
“Did Gaige give me this child before he was taken?”
“Or… did Surganah’s curse go deeper than I knew?”
She bit her lip until it bled, hoping the pain would silence the chaos in her thoughts. But nothing helped.
When Gaige touched her, he had loved her. His eyes had been kind. His hands, gentle. She had seen herself reflected in him—whole, seen, cherished.
But before that night, there had been another. A night stolen by darkness. A night not of love, but of power. Surganah had made her what she now was. He had bound her to seduction and sent her to destroy Gaige… and she had succeeded, even without meaning to.
Now the child stirred in her womb. And she did not know if it was born from love—or domination.
She stared at the mirror across the room. The woman in it looked like her—but she didn’t feel like herself anymore.
Her thoughts turned to Gaige again—his final scream, his blood pooling on the stone, the look in his eyes when he realized the Superior had turned from him. And then… the silence. The finality.
And yet, somewhere deep in her soul, she still held a hope. A hope that maybe… just maybe… this child was his. Gaige’s.
She whispered, trembling, “If you’re his… I’ll love you forever. I’ll protect you with all that I am. I’ll raise you to be kind, strong, and good… even in a world like this.”
A tear traced her cheek.
“But if you’re Surganah’s…” she swallowed hard, “what will you become?”
