Bard stared at the boy’s chest—at the wound. It pulsed darkly, yet no fire consumed the child from within.

“Did the blade touch any other blood?” Bard asked sharply.

“No. Nothing. It struck only him.”

“Then this is impossible,” Bard whispered.

Thorne knelt, inspecting the wound with unease. “What if it’s not Gaige’s blood? What if it’s something worse?”

“Don’t be stupid,” Bard snapped. But even as he spoke, doubt crept into his voice.

They watched the child as he lay on the altar. Pale. Weak. Yet… alive.

The room grew colder.

For the first time, Bard’s confidence trembled.

They had wounded him—but had not broken him.

And as Jeun’s eyelids fluttered, as his tiny fingers curled slightly over the stone… they realized something that turned their hearts to ice:

The child wasn’t dying.

He was enduring.

And somewhere in the blood that ran through Jeun’s veins—there was something ancient, something untouchable.

The knife had failed.

And their time… was running out.
