TRUTH AND LIES
(What have I done?)
Episode 9
Alyssa’s pov:
I brushed my hair and parked it in front of the mirror and then I turned around.
I was already putting on my uniform and wow! I looked stunning.
It seems the uniform was just meant for me.
I took in a deep breath and smiled, still starring into the mirror.
“You can do this Alyssa” I said to myself and took my bag, headed out of the room.
This is my day.
I walked into the sitting room and met my mum dressing Maja up for school. Jake was there as well, just watching the TV.
“Kapatid!” Maja called excitedly and tired coming to embrace me but couldn’t because mum was putting on her shoes.
But I still want upto her and kissed her.
“You’re done already? Isn’t too early?” Mum asked.
“No mum. It’s my first day in school and you know a lot of things will need to be done.” I replied happily.
“But are you sure it’s really a free admission? What if they start asking for some kind of payment?”
“You don’t have to worry about that mum. Even if there is ill take care of it.”
“But what do you need to go to school for anyway?” Jake asked. “Isn’t there a way we can just sell out these admission and use the money for something reasonable?”
I growled my eyes at him and felt like chopping off his head.
I think I know why he’s this different from me. Maybe it’s because he’s actually my step brother.
Well, yes. Mum had given birth to him for a different father before she got married and so, I’m actually the first legitimate child of this family.
It’s quite unfortunate that my father left us.
“Maybe we should just sell you instead. It’s not like you’re important anyway” I told him and he grinned at me.
Mum reached for her purse and returned with a little currency.
“Here; use this for lunch” she told me as she handed me the money and I smiles and embraced her.
“Thank you Ina” I said happily and she rubbed my back and went back to Maja.
I knew she was happy for the admission; even if she doesn’t admit it.
“Okay. I’ll be leaving now mother. Bye.
“Bye Maja”.
“Bye Kapatid”.
I rolled my eyes at Jake and finally left the house.
I walked so boldly, hoping many people would see me because I’m putting on Mico’s uniform.
MICO HIGH SCHOOL was boldly printed on the upper part of the purple long sleeve that was tucked in with a short printed high waist skirt.
The shoes and purple stockings were customised, having MHS printed on them.
Everything was so lovely and I couldn’t believe I was now a student of the school.
I boarded a cab and all the passengers kept staring at me. Well, they should. I bet none of their kids have the opportunity if attending Mico High.
I kept smiling throughout the drive and soon we got to the street leading to MHS and so I got off cab.
I started walking dauntlessly, but my self confidence began to decrease when I saw different cars driving by to the school. It seemed all the students were having cars and here I was, trekking.
I decided to wave the childish thoughts aside and enjoy my first day in school.
The floored street was so neat and sparkling flowers were planted by the sides of the road.
what a beauty.
Soon, I got to the gate and met two security men standing there.
“Good morning senyour” I greeted breezily with a smile.
“Oh, morning miss. Did your car have a breakdown?” One of them asked and I puzzled.
So every student in here do have a car?
“No, I…I don’t have one” I stuttered, feeling a little abashed.
“You don’t? Where’s your pass?” The second one asked.
“Pass?” I repeated. “I…I don’t have one. This is actually my first day here in Mico High”.
“Oh! You must be the Alyssa girl, right? The student on scholarship”.
Oh my God! Does everyone know about it?
“Come in; come in” the first one said and made way for me to go in through the gate.
“Go right to the principal’s office. It’s on the second floor” he added.
“Thank you sir” I replied with a smile and turned to leave.
“Oh, and by the way, miss” he called me back.
“I love your hair…and your eyes”.
I smiled again and waved at him.
“Thanks” I replied and finally walked away, headed for the principal’s office.
God! This school is just too beautiful.
At the entrance after the gate, a huge and bold lettered “MHS” was constructed and decorated with flowers. The whole ground was tarred and neat. The two storey building was painted in purple and ash color which was the color of the school uniform. It was very big and I can’t imagine how lucky Mico is.
There were so many students around and majority of them were walking in pairs. Each had its own partner.
They kept stealing glances at me, but I was too shy to even stare back at them.
They all looked so classy and rich and I felt I was not upto their standard.
? Wow! Quite a lengthy hair…
? Look at her eyes…
? I haven’t seen her before.
They all kept talking about me as I walked by and I couldn’t help but blush.
I kept walking naively and whenever I came across a group of students, I’d jus stare at the floor.
I was too carried away and didn’t notice a car was honking behind me. I later realised and quickly jumped off the road.
The driver lowered her glasses and glared at me. It was a young pretty but strict looking woman.
“Have you gone deaf?” She asked angrily and I only bowed my head and she took off.
Ugh! What is wrong with me?
I kept walking and soon I entered the main building and took the stairs.
Wow! The stairs were so pretty.
I walked carefully on it and almost bumped into you student who was also on it, but thank God, I didn’t.
She just rolled her eyes .me and I scoffed.
All these rich spoilt brat.
I finally got to the principal’s office and peeped through the window and there I saw two students standing in front of the big desk with a plumpy man sitting on the other side of the desk.
Maybe he was the principal.
I was feeling too shy to go into the office, but the plumpy man caught me at the window and my heart skipped.
Why am I so nervous?
“Who’s there?”he asked and I walked slowly to the door and stood by the entrance.
“Uhm…good…good morning, sir” I greeted nervously and the two students in the office turned around and looked at me.
It was a boy and a girl.
“Good morning. Do you want to see me?” He replied and asked.
He seemed friendly.
“I Uhm…I’m new here. So…”
“Oh!” He cut me off. “Are you Alyssa Ramos?”
My anxiety increased. How did everyone get to know my name?
“Uh…y…yes sir” I replied shyly.
“Oh, please. Do come in. Have a seat”.
He pointed to a seat in front of the desk and I walked slowly and sat on it.
Hmm. Quite comfy.
He smiled and took his attention back to the other two students.
“So, I’m going to bid this under the rug but I want you to make sure nothing like this repeats itself ever again. Am I clearly understood?” He said authoritatively and the two students nodded.
Hmm. Just a nod. How arrogant
What were their offences anyway?
“Good. You can go” the plumpy man said to them and they left.
He turned back to me.
I looked at the header on the desk in front of him and his name was printed on it:
‘Mr. Fredo Julez
Principal’.
So my guess was right after all. He really was the principal.
“So, miss Alyssa Ramos” he called and started going through a pile of files on the table.
“So you’re the lucky girl huh? The only student on scholarship.
“Anyway, I’m Mr Fredo Julez, the principal of this lovely institution and welcome to Mico High School. Mico High is the best in the city and you can be sure to get the best”.
I smiled as I watched him bring out the file and opened it in front of me.
“Here; fill this form” he said and I took a pen and filled in my details.
Oh! I was assigned to grade 10.
“So we do have extra curriculum activities which includes the drama class, press club, singing and dancing class and Catherine class. They take place every Wednesday at 2pm and it si mandatory for you to belong to one of them.”
He was still talking when a woman walked in and wait…This is the same woman that had almost knocked me down with her car on my way to the office.
“Mr Fredo” she called as she walked up to the principal and stood beside him.
“Can I have your stamp please? I can’t find mine” she added and looked at me.
“Oh it’s you!” She said and I darted my eyes to the floor.
“You should be Alyssa, right? Alyssa Ramos?” She asked and I just nodded.
“No wonder you were so clumsy earlier on…”
“Mrs. Tamara!” The principal cut her off.
“What? You weren’t there Mr Fredo. You didn’t see what she did.
“Anyway, I’m still wandering how she was able to get a free admission here. And I don’t know why you’re not telling me, Mr Fredo” she said.
“Come on Mrs Tamara. We’ve been through this already” the principal replied as he brought out the stamp and gave it to her.
Oh! So he knows the person behind my admission? Who could it be?
The arrogant woman shut me a stare before walking out with the stamp.
Why doesn’t she like me, anyway?
“Don’t take what she said to heart, Alyssa” the principal touched my palm and said.
“That’s Mrs Tamara, the vice principal”.
Seriously? She was the vice principal with such an attitude?
I smiled and looked at the principal.
“It’s okay sir. There’s no problem” I told him and he nodded.
He upended his drawer and brought out a laminated paper.
“This is your time table for this semester” he said, passing the paper tome.
“Right now, you’ll be having English and lucky you, it’s going to be a special class because it’ll be taken by Mrs Houston.”
I arched my brows at him. Who was she and why was it special?
“I guess you must have heard of her?” He asked.
“Uhm…no”
“Seriously? You don’t know Mrs Houston? She was once a high class lecturer of English, but she resigned and right now, she’s the CEO of the Open Heart Enterprise in Davao city”.
“She stays in Davoa city?” I asked.
“Yes. But right now, she’s here on a project and so, she’ll be doing the honor of taking the English classes today” he replied and I nodded.
“Okay miss Alyssa. You may be on your way bow. I’ll assign someone to show you to your locker soon in the girl’s hostel”.
Wow! So they do have a hostel here even when it’s a day school?
Quite classic.
“Okay sir. Thanks” I replied as I stood up with my bag and headed for the door.
“Uhm sir” I stopped and tuned to look at him.
“Can I ask a question?”
“Yes sure.”
“Who’s responsible for the admission?”
He looked at me and looked down at the table.
“you’re running late for class, Alyssa.” He replied and I was bemused.
Why si he hiding it from everyone? Who could it be?
“Okay sir” I told him and finally left the office.
I took directions and accurately got to my class. It still feels like a dream to me. I can’t believe I’m here in Mico high.
I stood by the door of my class and that was when the real fear began
How do I walk in?
They were so many students in it, all looking so rich and classy and I felt so intimidated.
I finally gathered up courage and stepped into the class and wow! Was this a class or an hotel room?
It really looked like an expensive hotel room just that, there was no bed in it.
