INTO THE DEPTHS OF LOVE : CHAPTER 91 – 100

By Succie Brown.

Richard’s eyes remained fixed on the road, not sparing a glance at Kristin. The silence was suffocating, eating away at her slowly. He had defended her, made everyone apologize, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t furious with her.

The coldness in his eyes and the silence between them made his anger unmistakable. Kristin knew she should have told him the truth, but she had been too scared, and now it had come out in the worst possible way. As she stared at Richard, she wrestled with how to begin.

After a few moments, she finally mustered the courage to speak. “Mr. Grouchy, I—”

“I don’t want to hear your voice,” he cut her off coldly. He still didn’t look at her, and that broke Kristin’s heart. He had every right to be mad, but it was tearing her apart.

“I’m sorry, I wanted to—”

“Did you not hear me when I said I don’t want to hear your voice?” he interrupted again, his gaze now on her. His eyes were not only filled with anger but also disappointment.

Kristin lowered her head to her lap, her tears falling onto her clothes. She had messed up.

When they arrived at the mansion, Richard’s car came to a stop. Without even glancing at her, he uttered, “Get down.”

Not wanting to further fuel his anger, Kristin stepped out of the car as instructed. She had hoped Richard would follow her so they could talk, but instead, he drove away, leaving her standing alone.

Tears welled up in her eyes as her worst fears materialized. Perhaps it wouldn’t have been this bad if she had told him the truth earlier, but now it was too late for regrets.

Squatting on the ground, she cried silently. If given a choice, she would have preferred Richard’s rage over his silence and indifference.

Despite everything, she was grateful that he had defended her, but all she wanted now was for him to give her a chance to explain herself.

Meanwhile, Richard drove to the hotel. As soon as he arrived at his office, he picked up the file containing Kristin’s background information, the one Luke had always urged him to read.

A wave of sadness washed over his face as he read through it and discovered that Kristin had indeed had a one-night stand with a stranger and gotten pregnant.

*She’s the daughter of my mom’s sister* the lie Kristin had told him echoed in his mind, stoking his anger.

Richard let out a thunderous scream, sweeping everything off his desk. If it weren’t for the therapy he has been undergoing to control his anger, he would have broken every object in the office.

He wasn’t hurt because Kristin had a past or a daughter. He was hurt because she had lied to him. He had always been honest with her, yet she looked him in the eyes and lied.

“How could you lie to me!” he raged. The reason he had left without a word earlier was because he had promised her he wouldn’t lose his temper.

He knew he would have yelled at her, so he dropped her off and drove off.

Luke entered the office, and the pained look on Richard’s face filled him with guilt. Although Richard had managed to take down the post about Kristin’s one-night stand, Luke had seen it before it disappeared from the internet.

“Richard,” Luke called softly, a mixture of fear and guilt in his voice.

Richard’s gaze turned toward him, the disappointment on his face unmistakable. Luke felt awful. He hadn’t meant to keep the truth from Richard; he simply hadn’t wanted to pry into his personal life with Kristin.

Richard held up the documents. “You knew about this, didn’t you? You knew Kristin had a daughter and yet you kept it from me! Why? I trusted you, Luke!” His voice cracked with betrayal.

“I didn’t mean to hide it from you. I just didn’t want to interfere in your relationship with Kristin, which is why I kept urging you to read the file.”

“That doesn’t matter! You should have told me, Luke!” Richard shouted.

On any other day, Luke knew Richard would have done more than just shout, but he could tell Richard was trying to control his anger.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t tell Kristin either. She doesn’t know I know about her daughter. All I know is that she had a child from a one-night stand. I didn’t dig any deeper. I don’t even know her daughter’s name, and I didn’t want Kristin to feel ashamed.”

“Then I’ve been in the dark this entire time. I’ve been betrayed by the people closest to me! You, of all people, Luke!” Richard’s voice wavered, raw with emotion. “I’ve always considered you a friend.”
