A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 101 – 110
Mammon only laughed, as if I’d told a joke meant for his ears alone. “Risk? You wound me, Lucifer. I was *assisting* you, in a way. You can’t deny that the boy was becoming… inconvenient. You were simply too close to the situation to see it clearly.”
My patience frayed further. “You think I needed your interference?”
“it seemed interesting” Mammon’s tone turned mocking. “he wanted you gone so badly, I just helped .” He gave me a patronizing look, his black eyes glinting in the dim hallway light. “You were waiting for her to leave him? I just killed him for you, lessen your burden .”
I fought the urge to growl. I held my ground, my voice cold as steel. “stay out of my business Mammon ”
Mammon chuckled, feigning innocence. “i will try my best ”Mammon shrugged, feigning nonchalance. “Perhaps. But let’s be honest, Lucifer, when has that ever stopped me?
You may lord over us, but you can’t deny the impact of a little… greed.” He leaned forward, his smile twisted and unsettling. “You’re bound to her, and now she’s bound to *you*. You don’t have to thank me. But I know that much.” he turn to leave.
The hallway was silent once again, save for the quiet thrum of power that lingered in the air where Mammon had been.
I stood there, breathing deeply as I processed the conversation. Despite everything, I couldn’t help the subtle shift in my expression.
Satisfaction tugged at the corners of my mouth, and before I knew it, I was smiling. Not the usual practiced grin of mockery or control, but something darker, deeper.
“You did well,” I muttered, knowing Mammon could still hear me wherever he had slithered off to. “Killing Liam was a bit low for you, but setting him up for such pain… that was quite amazing.”
I felt a familiar surge of amusement ripple through me. Mammon, for all his faults, had executed his plan perfectly.
Watching Liam struggle, desperate and cornered, watching Selene cling to that fleeting sense of hope—only to have it torn from her in the most excruciating way possible—that was the true artistry.
Killing him outright would have been a waste, too simple. But the pain… oh, the pain was masterful.
“I knew you’d appreciate it,” Mammon’s voice echoed faintly, as if he hadn’t quite left yet.
Then, in a blink, the aura of greed dissipated entirely, and I was left in the quiet corridor, my mind still swirling with the aftershocks of what had just transpired.
Liam’s death had been inevitable from the start. His existence had always been a thorn in my side, not because of any inherent threat, but because of what he symbolized for Selene.
Humanity, fragility, sentimentality—all the things I was determined to strip from her.
Mammon’s interference, while reckless, had served a greater purpose. I wouldn’t let his arrogance go unchecked, but for now, he had done me a favor.
I could almost picture Selene in the room behind me, her slender frame trembling as she grieved over Liam.
Her sorrow was palpable, seeping through the walls like a thick fog. I could taste it, feel it wrapping around my senses.
It was exquisite in its depth—raw, real. A part of me wanted to go back in there, to watch her, to see how she would cope now that everything she held onto had been ripped away.
But I didn’t.
The sun had already begun its lazy ascent over the horizon, bathing the mansion in a golden hue. The soft morning light spilled through the windows, casting long shadows across the floor.
I hadn’t slept, not that I needed to. Sleep was a luxury for those who had the privilege of forgetting, if only for a few hours. I had no such luxury.
Not after last night.
