A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 11 – 20

My heart clenched at his words. I hadn’t told him about the strange dream, or the fact that I’d been constantly looking over my shoulder, expecting something—or someone—to appear. I didn’t want him to worry, not about things I couldn’t even explain to myself.

“I’m fine, Liam,” I said, trying to smile, but I could feel the strain in it. “I promise.”

He didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push it either. Instead, he leaned in closer, his eyes locked on mine. For a brief moment, the air between us seemed to shift, thickening with something unspoken. I felt my breath catch as he got closer, his lips hovering near mine, and I realized with a jolt that he was about to kiss me.

“Liam…” I started to say, but the words got caught in my throat.

His lips brushed against my cheek instead, and I could feel the warmth of his breath against my skin. For a moment, I didn’t move, didn’t say anything. It wasn’t that I didn’t care about Liam—he was my best friend, the one constant in my life. But I wasn’t sure if I felt… that way about him. And as much as I appreciated his closeness, the idea of kissing him felt—wrong.

His expression unreadable. Not wanting to make things more awkward, he pressed a quick kiss to my forehead before pulling away completely.

“Smooth, right?” he said with a small laugh, trying to lighten the mood. “Thought I’d aim for the forehead instead.”

I let out a soft laugh, relieved that he wasn’t taking it too seriously. “Yeah, real smooth.”

There was a beat of silence, and then, out of nowhere, Liam reached out and poked me in the side, right in that spot that made me jump. I yelped, swatting at his hand, but he just grinned and did it again.

“Liam, stop!” I squealed, laughing despite myself as he continued to tickle me, his fingers finding all the sensitive spots he knew so well. I tried to wriggle away, but he was relentless, laughing as I squirmed beneath him.

“Never!” he declared, his eyes dancing with amusement. “This is payback for making me come through the window.”

“You did that yourself!” I managed to get out between fits of laughter, trying—and failing—to shove him away. “This is—your fault!”

He just laughed harder, clearly enjoying my struggle, and for a few minutes, everything felt light again. No strange dreams, no haunting feelings of being watched, no tense moments. Just us, like it had always been, laughing and teasing each other.

Eventually, I managed to grab his wrists, holding them still, though I was breathless and my sides ached from laughing. “Okay, okay, you win,” I panted, releasing his hands and collapsing back onto the bed.

He grinned down at me, his face flushed with laughter. “You always say that.”

“Because you always win,” I muttered, rolling my eyes, but there was no real annoyance behind it.

We lay there for a moment, both catching our breath. I glanced over at him, and he was watching me with that same soft expression from before, the one that made me feel like maybe he saw something in me that I couldn’t see myself.

“Selene,” he said softly, his voice serious again. “You know I’m always here for you, right? No matter what.”

I swallowed, feeling a lump form in my throat. I didn’t trust myself to speak, so I just nodded. He was always there—he always had been—and I knew I didn’t deserve him, not really. But the thought of losing him, of things changing between us, terrified me more than I cared to admit.

“Thanks, Liam,” I whispered, not sure what else to say. I hoped he could see the gratitude in my eyes, the silent appreciation for everything he’d done for me.

He smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Anytime.”

The moment stretched between us, heavy with things left unsaid, until finally, I broke the silence. “I had a strange dream last night,” I admitted, feeling a mix of vulnerability and a strange urge to share. “Like… really strange.”

His brows furrowed in concern. “What was it about?”

I hesitated, trying to find the words. “I was in this garden, but it was unlike any garden I’d ever seen. Everything was vibrant and alive, but it felt… wrong. There was this strange gift in my hands, and then there was this man—”

“A man?” Liam interrupted, his interest piqued.

“Yeah,” I continued, pushing through the unease. “He looked really good,He was so close to me, and he kept asking me what I desired. It felt so real, like he could see right into my soul.”

Liam shifted closer, his expression serious. “What did he want?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted, feeling a shiver run down my spine. “It felt like he wanted to offer me something. Like he could grant me a wish or something… but it was unsettling. I felt trapped, like I had to choose something, but I didn’t know what. And then I woke up.”

He was quiet for a moment, processing what I had said. “That sounds intense, Selene. Dreams can be weird sometimes, especially when we’re stressed. But you know it’s just a dream, right?”

I nodded, but deep down, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more to it. “Yeah, I know. But it felt… different. Like it was trying to tell me something.”

He reached out, brushing his fingers against my arm in a comforting gesture. “If it’s bothering you, maybe you should try to forget about it. Focus on the good stuff. We can hang out today, maybe grab some food or something?”

I appreciated his effort to lighten the mood, but a part of me was still caught up in the strangeness of the dream. “Thanks, Liam. I just… I don’t know. It’s hard to shake off.”

“Let’s get your mind off it then. Come on, I’ll even pay for breakfast.” He stood up and stretched again, his playful demeanor returning. “Maybe a huge stack of pancakes will do the trick?”

I couldn’t help but smile at his enthusiasm. “You know how to bribe me, don’t you?”

“Of course,” he said with a wink. “It’s my special talent.”

As he moved toward the window again, I felt a warmth spread through me, a comfort that momentarily pushed aside the lingering unease from my dream.

When I tried getting up, I couldn’t, I suddenly felt an arm placed on my shoulder, I wanted turning around, but it felt like I was paralyzed.

” You like him” the voice smooth close to my ears ” he might die with the way he touches you ”

After those words, I turn around but no one was there, just the box glowing… What did I get myself into?
