A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 151 – 160
LUCIFER’S VULNERABLE SIDE 1
SELENE SMILE.
The tension in the mansion had grown unbearable. Lucifer’s mood hung over the place like a storm cloud, and I couldn’t stop replaying the moment his eyes locked on me, cold and disappointed. He hadn’t said much, but his silence had cut deeper than any of his words ever could.
But I wasn’t about to sit around wallowing in that disappointment, not when I could escape for a while. I needed air, a distraction, something—anything—to make me feel human again.
That’s how I found myself in the hallway, grabbing my coat when Lucien caught my eye. He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, watching me like he knew what I was up to.
“Going somewhere?” His tone was neutral, but there was a flicker of curiosity beneath it.
I squared my shoulders. “Yes. I need to get out of here.”
His brow lifted, and a sly grin crept onto his face. “Well, isn’t that interesting? Care for some company?”
I hesitated, my hand gripping the doorknob. Did I really want him tagging along? Then again, I didn’t feel like being alone either. “Fine,” I muttered. “But don’t make me regret this.”
Lucien’s grin widened. “Oh, trust me, sweetheart. You won’t.”

The bar was everything I needed and everything I hated at the same time. The thrum of music vibrated through my chest, the air thick with the mingling scents of sweat, alcohol, and perfume.
People crowded the dance floor, laughing and shouting over the music, their movements chaotic and free.
Lucien had insisted we go to one of the most popular spots in New York, and as soon as we stepped through the doors, he seemed to come alive.
He greeted the bartender like an old friend, ordered drinks for both of us, and dragged me to a table near the edge of the dance floor.
I took a sip of the drink he handed me, wincing at the burn as it slid down my throat. “I don’t think this is a good idea,” I mumbled, eyeing the crowd.
“Nonsense,” Lucien said, throwing back his drink with ease. “You need this. You’re too tense, too in your head. Let loose for once.”
I sighed, leaning back in my chair. “Easy for you to say. You’re not the one with Lucifer breathing down your neck.”
Lucien snorted. “Oh, believe me, I’ve had my fair share of his brooding. But you? You’ve got it worse because you actually care what he thinks.”
That hit a nerve, and I glared at him. “I don’t care what he thinks.”
“Sure you don’t.” Lucien leaned forward, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “That’s why you’ve been sulking since we left the mansion.”
“I’m not sulking.”
“Right. And I’m not devastatingly handsome.”
Despite myself, I let out a laugh, shaking my head. “You’re insufferable.”
“I try.”
The music shifted to a slower, sultrier beat, and the lights dimmed slightly, casting the room in a warm, golden glow. Lucien downed another drink and leaned back in his chair, studying me.
“So,” he said, his tone more serious now, “are you going to tell me what’s really bothering you, or are we just going to sit here and pretend everything’s fine?”
I hesitated, my fingers tracing the rim of my glass. “It’s… complicated.”
“Life always is. Try me.”
I took a deep breath, staring at the swirling liquid in my glass. “It’s Lucifer. He… he looked at me like I was a disappointment. And I don’t know why it bothers me so much, but it does. I feel like I’ve let him down somehow.”
