A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 151 – 160

I froze for half a second, suddenly questioning the brilliance of my plan. Then, with the confidence only drunkenness could provide, I blurted out, “Lucifer!”

There was a pause, and I could practically feel his confusion through the phone. “Selene?” His tone was sharp, a mix of surprise and irritation.

“Yup, it’s me,” I said, my words slurring slightly. “Lucien’s not here. He’s… um… somewhere.” I giggled, feeling absurdly proud of myself for some reason.

“Where are you?” His voice was calmer now, but there was an edge to it that made me squirm.

“Where am I?” I repeated, blinking at the room around me like it would suddenly give me the answer. “I’m… at a place. With music. And drinks. Lots of drinks.”

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. “You’re drunk.”

“I’m not drunk,” I said indignantly, though the words came out more as a slurred protest. “I’m just… tipsy.”

“Selene.” His voice was firmer now, the kind of tone that made me sit up straighter even though he wasn’t there. “Why are you drinking? And why are you with Lucien?”

“Because I wanted to, duh,” I said, rolling my eyes even though he couldn’t see me. “And Lucien’s fun. Did you know that? He’s so much fun. He dances like… like a chicken!”

There was a long silence, and I could almost picture him pinching the bridge of his nose in exasperation. “Put Lucien on the phone.”

“I can’t,” I said, leaning back in the booth with a dramatic sigh. “He’s… he’s peeing. Or something.”

Lucifer’s sigh was audible. “Selene, listen to me. Tell me where you are so I can come get you.”

“Nooo,” I whined, shaking my head even though he couldn’t see me. “I’m fine. I don’t need rescuing.”

“You’re drunk in public with Lucien,” he said, his tone icy. “That’s not fine.”

“Why do you care, huh?” I demanded, my voice rising slightly. “You’re mad at me, remember? Disappointed. You didn’t even look at me before I left!”

His silence stretched for a moment, and when he spoke again, his voice was quieter. “Selene, I wasn’t—”

“Don’t,” I cut him off, my emotions bubbling to the surface. “Don’t lie to me. You looked at me like I wasn’t good enough. Like I was… like I was a burden.”

“That’s not true,” he said, his voice sharper now. “I never thought that.”

“Yeah, well, it felt like it,” I muttered, my vision blurring with tears. “So, I left. And now I’m having fun. Lots and lots of fun. You should try it sometime.”

“Selene, please,” he said, his tone softening. “Tell me where you are.”

I hiccupped, wiping at my eyes with the back of my hand. “Why? So you can come and glare at me some more? No thanks.”

“I’m not angry with you,” he said, his voice almost gentle now. “I’m worried about you.”

“You’re lying,” I accused, though a small part of me wanted to believe him.

“I’m not,” he said firmly. “Selene, you’re important to me. More than you realize. So please, just tell me where you are.”

His words caught me off guard, and for a moment, I was silent, my drunken brain struggling to process them.

“You’re important to me too,” I mumbled finally, my voice barely audible. “Even though you’re mean. And bossy. And… and so damn pretty it’s annoying.”

There was a choked sound on the other end of the line, almost like a laugh. “Selene, please,” he said, his voice warm now. “Just tell me where you are.”

I opened my mouth to answer, but at that moment, Lucien returned, sliding into the booth across from me. His eyes narrowed as he spotted his phone in my hand.

“What are you doing?” he asked, reaching for it.

“Talking to Lucifer,” I said, holding it out to him. “He’s… worried. For some reason.”

Lucien snatched the phone and cut the call.
