A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 151 – 160
We walked in silence for a moment, the sounds of the city humming around us. She glanced up at me, her expression softer now.
“You know,” she said, her voice quieter, “you didn’t have to come.”
“Yes, I did,” I said simply.
She stopped walking, turning to face me fully. “Why?”
Her question caught me off guard, though I suppose it shouldn’t have. I hesitated, the weight of my own emotions pressing against my chest.
“Because you’re mine,” I said finally, the words coming out more forcefully than I intended.
Her eyes widened slightly, a blush creeping up her cheeks. She opened her mouth to say something but then closed it again, seemingly at a loss for words.
I smirked, leaning in closer. “Speechless, Selene? That’s a first.”
“Shut up,” she muttered, looking away, though I didn’t miss the small smile tugging at her lips.
We continued walking, her arm brushing against mine occasionally. She was quieter now, her earlier energy replaced by something more introspective.
“You’re not as scary as I thought you’d be,” she said suddenly, breaking the silence.
I glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. “Is that so?”
She nodded, her gaze fixed on the pavement. “Everyone’s always talking about how terrifying you are, but… you’re kind of nice. In your own weird, bossy way.”
“Nice?” I repeated, the word sounding foreign in my mouth.
She looked up at me, her expression serious. “Yeah. Nice. Don’t let it go to your head, though.”
I laughed, a genuine, deep laugh that surprised even me. “I’ll do my best.”
She stumbled slightly, and I reached out, steadying her with a hand on her arm. She looked up at me, her eyes wide and vulnerable.
“Thank you,” she said softly.
“For what?” I asked, my voice equally soft.
“For coming to get me,” she said. “For not… leaving me behind.”
I didn’t respond right away, my chest tightening at the sincerity in her voice. Instead, I simply nodded, guiding her forward once more.
The silence between us was surprisingly comforting as we wandered through the quiet streets.
The chaos of the bar, the pounding music, and the suffocating smells were behind us, leaving just the two of us and the cool night air. Selene walked slightly ahead, her arms swinging loosely at her sides.
She tilted her head back to look at the stars, the faint glow of streetlights casting a soft halo around her.
“Why are the stars so far away?” she mused aloud, her voice tinged with the wistful drunkenness that had defined her night so far.
“They wouldn’t shine as brightly if they weren’t,” I replied, matching her leisurely pace.
She hummed in response, though I wasn’t sure if she fully understood my words. Still, it was oddly endearing to see her so unguarded.
She was always so cautious, always overthinking. Tonight, she was a whirlwind of emotions, and while it was maddening, it was also… captivating.
Suddenly, without warning, she stopped walking and plopped herself down on the cold pavement of the sidewalk.
“Selene,” I said, surprised. “What are you doing?”
She hugged her knees to her chest, her face burying into them. Then, out of nowhere, I heard a muffled sob.
