A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 161 – 170

The hours dragged on, the sun climbing higher and higher before finally beginning its descent. My legs screamed in protest with every step, but I couldn’t stop. I didn’t even know what I was running from anymore, only that I had to keep moving.

By the time I finally collapsed, the sun had disappeared, leaving me in complete darkness.

I fell to my knees, my chest heaving as I gulped in air. My legs felt like jelly, trembling uncontrollably, and my hands were scraped and raw from clawing at tree trunks to steady myself along the way.

The forest was alive with sound—branches rustling in the wind, distant howls that sent shivers down my spine, and the occasional snap of a twig that made my heart leap into my throat.

I hugged my knees to my chest, my eyes darting around as I tried to make sense of where I was.

But there was no sense to be found.

I was lost. Alone.

And then, I wasn’t.

A figure stepped out of the shadows, tall and imposing, his movements fluid and deliberate. The moonlight filtered through the canopy of trees, illuminating his features—a strong jawline, piercing blue eyes, and blond hair that seemed to glow faintly in the dim light.

For a moment, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me.

“Liam?” I breathed, my voice trembling.

The man smiled, but it wasn’t the warm, familiar smile I was used to. It was colder, sharper, and sent a chill racing down my spine.

“Selene,” he said, his voice smooth and calm.

I scrambled to my feet, my heart pounding. “What are you doing here? How did you find me?” I shake my head ” who are you? Another demon?”

He tilted his head, his eyes glinting with something I couldn’t quite place. “That’s not the question you should be asking.”

“What does that mean?” I asked, taking a step back.

“Does it matter?” he said, taking a step forward. “You’re here. I’m here. That’s all that matters.”

Something about him was off. He looked like Liam, but the way he spoke, the way he moved—it was all wrong.

“Stay away from me,” I said, my voice stronger than I felt.

He laughed softly, a sound that sent a shiver down my spine. “Now, why would I do that?”

“Because you’re not Liam,” I said, the realization hitting me like a freight train.

The smile faded from his face, replaced by something colder, more dangerous.

“You’re smarter than I gave you credit for,” he said, his tone almost mocking.

I took another step back, my mind racing. If this wasn’t Liam, then who—or what—was he?

“Who are you?” I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady.

The man’s eyes darkened, his smile returning, but it was sharper now, more predatory.

“Someone who’s been waiting a very long time to meet you,” he said.

“That’s not an answer,” I said, clenching my fists.

“It’s the only one you’re going to get,” he said, taking another step forward.

I turned and ran.

My legs screamed in protest, but I didn’t care. The only thing that mattered was putting as much distance as possible between me and… whatever that thing was.

The forest seemed to close in around me as I ran, the branches clawing at my skin and hair, the roots threatening to trip me with every step.

The sounds of the forest grew louder, more chaotic, as if the animals themselves were warning me to get out.

But no matter how fast I ran, the footsteps behind me never faltered.

“Selene,” the voice called, taunting and calm. “You can’t run forever.”

Tears blurred my vision as I stumbled forward, my chest heaving with every breath. I didn’t know where I was going—I didn’t even know if there was anywhere to go—but I couldn’t stop.

I wouldn’t.

The ground beneath me suddenly gave way, and I fell, tumbling down a steep incline until I landed hard at the bottom.

Pain shot through my side, but I bit back a cry, scrambling to my feet.

I was in a clearing now, the moonlight illuminating the space around me.

And then he was there.

The man stepped into the clearing, his movements unnervingly smooth, his eyes glinting with a cold, calculated hunger.

“There’s no need to run anymore,” he said, his voice low and dangerous.

I backed away, my heart hammering in my chest.

“Stay away from me,” I said again, my voice trembling.

He tilted his head, studying me like I was some kind of puzzle he couldn’t quite figure out.

“You don’t even know what you are, do you?” he said, his tone almost pitying.

“I don’t care,” I snapped, my fists clenched. “Just leave me alone.”

He laughed, the sound cold and hollow.

“Oh, Selene,” he said, taking another step forward. “You have no idea what’s coming.”

Before I could respond, the sound of footsteps reached my ears, and the man’s expression darkened. He turned toward the trees, his body suddenly vanished.

And then I saw him.

Lucien stepped into the clearing, his presence like a beacon of light in the darkness.

“Selene,” he said softly, “come with me. I’ll keep you safe.”

I ran to Lucien, my heart pounding in my chest.

And for the first time since I’d left the mansion, I felt like I could breathe.
