A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 161 – 170

LUCIFER FROWN.

The flickering candlelight cast restless shadows across the walls of my study, but I barely noticed.

My desk was strewn with documents—contracts, letters, reports that required my signature—but they remained untouched.

My fingers tapped against the polished wood in a steady rhythm, betraying my mounting frustration.

It wasn’t like me to lose focus, but tonight was different.

Selene.

She was all I could think about.

Lucien’s casual assurance echoed in my mind: *“She just went for a walk.”* Simple words, meant to dismiss my concern, but they had done the opposite. Night had fallen hours ago, and she still hadn’t returned.

I leaned back in my chair, staring up at the ceiling. Scenarios played through my head, each one more dangerous than the last.

What if she had wandered too far, into a part of the forest even I couldn’t control?

The trees here weren’t just trees—they were ancient, alive, and merciless to trespassers. They could twist and bend, trapping her, suffocating her…

No. I shook the thought away, though it left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Then there was the possibility of someone finding her—someone who knew what she was.

I had kept her existence a secret even from Lucien, hidden her from those who would exploit her or worse, destroy her.

But secrets had a way of slipping through cracks. What if one of my enemies had found her? They wouldn’t hesitate to kill her, to hurt her simply to see me bleed.

My fingers dug into the armrests of my chair as my mind spun darker webs. What if she was running? What if someone had planted the idea in her head, convinced her to leave?

Gabriel.

His name burned through my thoughts like poison.

If he’d come anywhere near her, I would—

I stood abruptly, pacing the room as my frustration grew. The air felt stifling, the shadows mocking me with their silent indifference. I couldn’t just sit here. I had to—

No. I forced myself to stop, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath. Acting without a clear plan would solve nothing. I needed to think,

But the scenarios kept coming.

What if she wasn’t running? What if she was taken? I imagined her struggling, her terrified eyes looking for someone—looking for me—and finding nothing.

I slammed my fist onto the desk, the impact rattling the ink bottle and scattering a stack of papers. I better leave and find her, it’s time.

A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts, and I turned sharply as it opened without my permission.

Gabriel.

He stepped inside with that infuriating grin, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his coat.

“Lucifer,” he said, his voice dripping with mockery. “You look troubled.”

I clenched my jaw, the sight of him igniting a spark of rage in my chest. “Leave.”

His grin widened as he closed the door behind him. “Now, is that any way to greet your brother?”

“You’re no brother of mine,” I snapped, my voice low and cold. “Get out before I—”

“Before you what?” Gabriel interrupted, tilting his head. “Kill me? You’ve tried that before, remember?”

I didn’t respond, my patience already worn thin. He wasn’t worth my anger—not right now.

But then he pulled something from his coat pocket.

A recorder.

The small device gleamed in the candlelight as Gabriel pressed a button.

The room filled with Lucien’s voice.
