A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 171 – 180
Lucien froze, his back still turned to me. For a long moment, he didn’t say anything. Then he let out a bitter laugh. “Hate you? You think this is about hate?”
He spun around, his eyes blazing as he stalked toward me. “You’re in my side, Selene. You make everything more complicated than it needs to be. But hate? No. If anything, I pity you.”
“Pity me?” I repeated, my voice trembling. “Why?”
“Because you’re in over your head, and you don’t even realize it,” he said, his tone softer now. “You’re playing a game you don’t understand, with stakes higher than you can imagine. And in the end, you think staying with Lucifer is safe, you’re here asking me why you’re here not with him.”
Why does he look really angry, is it horrible for me to wish to be beside Lucifer?
His words did send a chill down my spine, but I refused to let him see how much they affected me. “I’m not some helpless girl, Lucien. I can take care of myself. And staying with Lucifer is not something you should be complaining about, I can still survive without him”
“really?” he challenged, raising an eyebrow. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re barely holding it together.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but the words caught in my throat. Because deep down, I knew he was right. I *was* barely holding it together.
Lucien sighed, running a hand through his hair again. “Look, I don’t like this any more than you do. But I’m not your enemy, Selene. If anything, I’m the only ally you’ve got right now.”
I frowned, unsure whether to believe him. “Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t,” he admitted with a shrug. “But trust me or not, I’m all you’ve got.”
I hated how much sense he made. And I hated even more that part of me wanted to trust him, despite everything.
“What happens now?” I asked, my voice quiet.
“Now,” he said, his smirk returning, “you do as you’re told and stay out of trouble. And maybe, just maybe, you will be out of Lucifer life.”
I stared at him, trying to figure out if he was being serious or just messing with me. But before I could say anything else, he turned and walked toward the door.
“Where are you going?” I called after him.
“To get some air,” he said without looking back. “Try not to burn the place down while I’m gone.”
And just like that, he was gone, leaving me alone in the unfamiliar house with nothing but my thoughts.
I sank onto the couch, burying my face in my hands as a wave of exhaustion washed over me. I didn’t know who to trust or what to believe anymore. All I knew was that I was stuck in a game I didn’t understand, and the stakes were higher than I’d ever imagined.
The silence pressed against my ears as if the house itself was trying to crush me. I’d had enough of being alone. Enough of being left behind to stew in my thoughts. If Lucien thought I’d just sit here and wait for whatever came next, he clearly didn’t know me at all.
Without much thought, I pushed myself off the couch and made my way to the front door. The cool metal of the handle felt grounding under my palm as I stepped outside into the evening air.
Lucien was there, leaning against the railing of the porch, a cigarette perched between his fingers. He was staring out at the horizon, the soft glow of the sunset casting golden light over his pale hair. For a moment, he looked almost…human.
He turned his head slightly as I approached, one eyebrow lifting in a silent question. “Couldn’t stay inside, huh?”
I crossed my arms over my chest, trying to appear braver than I felt. “I’m not great at being alone.”
He took a long drag of his cigarette, the tip glowing brighter in the dim light. When he exhaled, the smoke curled lazily into the air between us. “Figured as much.”
I leaned against the railing beside him, keeping a small but noticeable distance. The night was cool, the faint scent of rain lingering in the air. “Do you always smoke this much?” I asked, gesturing to the cigarette.
