Selene’s words hung in the air, heavy and charged. “I love you.” The phrase echoed in my mind, drowning out the quiet of the room.
I lay there, frozen, as a whirlwind of thoughts tore through me. What did love even mean? Could I truly understand it?
I had spent centuries in darkness, building walls around my heart, convinced that vulnerability was a weakness. And yet here she was, looking at me with those trusting eyes, baring her soul.
What if she found out the truth about herself? The darkness that surrounded her, the destined chaos that could unravel everything?
Would she still love me then? The thought gnawed at me. I could hardly bear the idea of losing her. Ending things now, while it was still possible, might be for the best. But could I bear to let her go?
“Selene,” I started, my voice heavy with uncertainty. But before I could form the words that lingered on the tip of my tongue, she interrupted me.
“You don’t have to reply now,” she said softly, her voice soothing like a balm. “Just stay with me. Let me stay with you.”
She moved closer, resting her head against my chest, her warmth seeping into me. I felt the tension in my body unravel as she nestled against me.
Time seemed to slow as I watched her, the way her eyelashes fluttered against her cheeks, the gentle rise and fall of her breath. She was so peaceful, so utterly unbothered by the turmoil swirling within me.
