A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 61 – 70
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: HER SILLY DECISION 1
SELENE GASPED.
My heart raced as I thought about Lucifer and what he was capable of. The words spilled out before I could stop them.
“Liam, you don’t understand. He’s…he’s terrifying. Lucifer—he might kill you.” those were the only words I could say, he doesn’t even know Lucifer and I just blurted this out, it will really seem like I just had a bad dream.
The words trembled on my lips, and I didn’t care how absurd I must have sounded. My voice cracked, the fear that gripped me seeping into every syllable. I couldn’t shake the image of Lucifer’s cold eyes, his smirk, the way he controlled the room with just his presence. It sent chills through me.
But Liam just laughed. He actually laughed, shaking his head as if I was talking about some silly nightmare. “Selene, come on. You must have had a bad dream or something. Lucifer? Like, the devil? You’ve gotta stop watching those horror movies.”
He didn’t get it. He never would. To him, this was all some joke, a bad dream I was having. As he pulled me into a warm hug, I could feel the steady thrum of his heartbeat against my ear, and for a second, I wished I could live in his world—a world where everything was simple, where Lucifer was nothing more than a myth.
He kissed my forehead gently. “Let me make you some breakfast, alright?” His smile was soft, so damn sweet, like I was the only thing that mattered in the world.
I watched him move toward the kitchen, my mind spinning. He would never believe me, and that was exactly why I needed to leave. I couldn’t risk him getting hurt.
Watching him disappear into the other room, I sat still, staring blankly at the floor. If Lucifer really wanted to kill Liam, he would do it without hesitation. And me? I wasn’t sure how long I could keep playing this dangerous game.
Whatever deal Lucifer wanted, I couldn’t let him win. I had to be smart. The best way to know your enemy is to befriend them, right? Maybe I could play along, make him think I was on his side. I had to return to the mansion, had to see how Lucifer would react.
I stood up slowly, making my way to the guest room. The air felt thick with tension as I closed the door behind me, leaning against it for support. Taking a deep breath, I moved to the bathroom and turned on the shower.
The water was cool against my skin, a welcome distraction from the mess swirling in my head. As I washed off, my thoughts kept drifting back to the mansion, to Lucifer’s unnerving presence.
I had to face him again, but this time, I would act normal. I would behave like I hadn’t seen him in my dreams, like none of this terrified me.
After my bath, I changed into one of the old outfits I’d left here at Liam’s place—nothing special, just a pair of jeans and a plain black top.
I wasn’t trying to impress anyone, especially not Lucifer. I glanced at myself in the mirror, running a hand through my damp hair, trying to steady my nerves. You can do this, I told myself. Just act like nothing is wrong.
Downstairs, Liam had already set the table. The smell of breakfast hit me—eggs, toast, and a side of bacon. It would’ve been comforting if my mind wasn’t racing with thoughts of what was waiting for me back at the mansion. I sat down quietly, picking at the food while Liam hovered, his usual cheery self.
“How’re you feeling now?” he asked, concern lacing his voice as he placed a cup of coffee next to my plate.
I forced a smile, nodding. “I’m good. Just…a little tired.” I lied. I wasn’t tired—I was scared, and every bite I took felt like it was turning to ash in my mouth.
“Off to work today?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. His smile faltered for a second, like he wasn’t entirely convinced by my answer.
I nodded again, trying to keep my tone light. “Yeah. I’m fine, really.”
Liam’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You just lost a relative, Selene. Isn’t it too early? You should take some time to rest.”
I pushed my food around the plate, trying to avoid his gaze. “I’ll be fine.”
After the meal, I stood up, ready to leave. Liam followed me to the door, his usual easy smile back on his face. But as I reached for the handle, he moved closer, gently taking my hand in his. “Should I be expecting you back?” he asked, his voice soft, like he didn’t want to pressure me but couldn’t help it.
My cheeks heated up from embarrassment. Why was he being so sweet? We weren’t dating, and yet he acted like we were sometimes. It made things complicated, and right now, I didn’t need more complications.
“Selene,” he said again, his voice a little firmer this time.
“Liam, I…” I trailed off, not sure what to say. How could I explain that I needed to keep him at arm’s length for his own safety?
“If you don’t want to come back here, I understand,” he said, his tone gentle. “Just let me know if you’re safe, okay?”
“Thank you,” I whispered, avoiding his gaze.
“I love you, Selene,” he said softly. “I hope you know that.”
I nodded, not trusting my voice. He pulled me into a hug, his warmth wrapping around me, but it only made the weight of my decision heavier. “Use some of your free time to think about it,” he murmured into my hair. “I’ll wait.”
“Thank you,” I repeated, feeling like a broken record.
