A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL : CHAPTER 61 – 70
Selene’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. It was a flimsy veil, masking the storm beneath her composed exterior.
She mentioned studying psychology as if everything was normal, as if she weren’t standing in the presence of the devil himself.
Her words were light, casual even, but I knew better than to be fooled by them. I moved closer, my fingers itching to feel the pulse beneath her skin. “Selene,” I called softly, closing the distance between us.
Her head tilted up, those wide eyes looking straight into mine. And there it was—fear. Subtle, but unmistakable. Her pupils dilated slightly, and her breath caught, though she tried to hide it.
She was doing an admirable job keeping her composure, but no one could hide fear from me. I let my hand drift to her neck, brushing lightly over her skin. Her heartbeat quickened, and I leaned closer, watching the conflict in her eyes intensify.
“Are you scared?” I asked, my voice low, probing. I wanted to hear her admit it, wanted to break through the facade she wore like a shield. Her lips parted, and her voice came out steadier than I expected.
“No.”
A small, amused smile tugged at the corner of my lips. She lied so easily. There was strength in that lie, an odd kind of bravery. I could see her trying to convince herself, trying to suppress the terror bubbling beneath the surface.
“Is there anything you want?” I let go of her neck, feeling unusually generous. I leaned in just enough to watch the reaction her body gave, to feel the tension radiating off her. “Anything you want to do with me? Or something you want me to do for you?”
I half-expected her to retreat, to ask me to leave her alone as they usually did. Humans, after all, couldn’t help but run from their problems.
Instead, she stepped closer, her eyes locked on mine. “Anything?” she asked, her voice steady despite the way her pulse raced.
My brows lifted slightly. “Indeed.”
Without warning, she raised herself on tiptoes and kissed my neck. The action was so absurd, so completely unexpected that for a moment, I was frozen in place.
What kind of game was she playing? I pulled back slightly, my hand reflexively touching where her lips had just been.
Confusion flickered in my mind, a rare sensation for me. I didn’t understand what she was trying to accomplish with such a strange gesture.
“What is it you want, Selene?” I asked, eyes narrowing. My patience was thinning.
She met my gaze again, this time with a determined glint in her eyes. “I want a hug.”
I blinked. Of all the things she could have asked for, this was the last thing I’d expected. “A… hug?”
“You said anything, right?” She was trying to maintain a serious expression, but I could see the faint blush creeping across her cheeks. “I want a hug.”
The sheer absurdity of her request left me momentarily speechless. A hug? From me? I, who had commanded armies, torn kingdoms apart, and claimed souls with a mere glance—what was I supposed to do with a hug?
But her expression was earnest, and though I still didn’t understand her game, I played along. Widening my arms, I watched as she practically threw herself at me, wrapping her arms around my neck and—shockingly—her legs around my waist.
“I missed you,” she whispered, and in that moment, the weight of her words settled on me.
I stood there, frozen in place, my mind racing to process what was happening. Her warmth, her closeness—it was unnerving. The sensation of her clinging to me, so vulnerable and open, sent a strange jolt through my body. For centuries, I had controlled every interaction, manipulated every response. I was the one who made others squirm, who bent them to my will. But now… I was at a loss.
My arms hovered in the air, unsure of what to do. For the first time in a long time, I didn’t know how to react. Her body pressed against mine, her head resting on my shoulder. She wasn’t afraid, not really. Not in this moment. She was… comfortable. Trusting.
Why?
It wasn’t possible. She knew who I was. What I was. Yet here she was, holding me as if I were someone she could rely on.
I closed my eyes briefly, trying to piece together the puzzle that was Selene. What game was she playing? Why wasn’t she begging for her life, for Liam’s life? Instead, she wanted this—this simple, human contact. A hug.
Slowly, cautiously, I let my arms wrap around her, one hand resting on her lower back, the other gently on her shoulder. Her body relaxed further against mine, and I found myself feeling something I hadn’t felt in a long, long time—something unsettling.
I allowed the hug to linger for a moment more, then gently set her down, keeping my hands on her shoulders as I looked into her eyes. Her cheeks were still flushed, her eyes bright with something I couldn’t quite name.
“You’re a strange girl, Selene,” I murmured, my voice softer than I intended. A smile spread on my face ” I like it ”
The smile drop from her face, as if she was expecting me to hate it? Is that her plan? For her to cling to me and I will hate it?
My hands move to her face ” hug me anytime you see fit ” her cheek redden ” I don’t mind the kiss too ” I point to my neck area then to my lips ” I prefer it here.”
Lucien clear his throat and she cover her face with her hands which made me chuckle.
